The Polk County Heritage Gallery seeks a volunteer Exhibits Chair to lead our Exhibits Committee in planning and producing high‑quality art exhibitions.

This role supports artist by coordinating show schedules, guiding artist communications, and collaborating closely with Marketing. The Chair helps shape multiple exhibitions per season, manages proposals and jurors, and ensures smooth installation and turnover.

Ideal for someone organized, community‑minded, and passionate about Iowa arts. This position can be for someone who wishes to serve on the Board of Directors or someone who only would like to serve on the Exhibits committee.

Polk County Heritage Gallery is seeking a volunteer to create graphics for about seven exhibitions each year. We need high‑resolution designs that can be printed as large posters (around 2.5 ft × 3 ft), plus a few resized versions for social media and email. A great fit for someone who enjoys clean, creative design and supporting local artists.

The Polk County Heritage Gallery is looking for a volunteer Social Media Manager to keep our Instagram and/or Facebook active and engaging. If you love visual storytelling and supporting local artists, we’d be thrilled to have you. Just a few hours a week can make a big impact.

The City Sprouts Urban Farm was established in 2022.  We grow more than 15,000 pounds annually that is distributed through partnerships with the Food Bank for the Heartland and other community partners.  The farm hosts an internship, field days, tours, a soil health program, and supports other urban farmers with resources and education.  

Volunteering on the farm may include harvesting, processing/packing produce, weeding, etc. Frequent lifting, bending, and walking on uneven ground may be part of the project. If you are excited to participate but need some accommodations or would benefit from tasks that require less physically intensive work please let us know ahead of time (email shannon@omahasprouts.org).

Parking: Please park at the corner of 3rd St. and Jaynes St. on the West side of the large shipping container. Carpooling is recommended as parking is somewhat limited.

PFP is installing You Matter boxes at local parks to provide free wellness resources, coping tools, and acts of kindness for people of all ages. We NEED your help to make it happen. Come help us make and package items for the You Matter boxes!

Program Description:  The RSVP Pen Pal Program provides students, typically in third grade 3 an opportunity for building intergenerational relationships while strengthening their social-emotional skills through letter writing with an RSVP volunteer Pen Pal.

Duties include:

·      Attend the Pen Pal Kickoff and Match meeting in the fall.

·      Complete an All About Me profile form to introduce yourself to the student.

·      Write letters to the Pen Pal(s) from September to April/May.

·      Mail each letter to the teacher within a week of receiving the student’s letter. Letters come about once a month.

·      Attend the Pen Pal Meet & Greet party at your student’s school.

Amount of time: Pen Pals usually spend about a half hour to an hour writing each letter.

Expectations:

·      Follow the Pen Pals Best Practices

·      Please mail letters on time – a late letter will cause a delay for the whole classroom.

·      If you are unable to send a letter as scheduled, notify the RSVP office as soon as possible to make other arrangements.

·      Do not share your contact information or have contact with students outside of the Pen Pal program.

·      Serve as a role model; offer a positive attitude and nurturing influence in your letters.

·      Maintain confidentiality – do not use your student's last name when talking to others.

·      Communicate any concerns and/or questions about your Pen Pal or the program to the RSVP office.

Are you 55 or better looking to make a difference in your community? The Panther Kids Games & Skills Club meets weekly starting Tuesday, September 29, 2026 on Tuesdays after school from 3:45-4:45 PM in the Logan-Magnolia Elementary School. Come as often as you like to help kids ages Kindergarten through 5th grade with opportunities to play games with friends or to learn new skills based on their interests. Volunteers will provide instruction, supervise and or play with the kids each week.

The Cass County Conservation Board is holding a Pellett Memorial Woods Workday! The program will be held at the Pellett Memorial Woods outside of Atlantic IA on September 26th 2026 at 1 pm- 4 pm (come and go). FREE! We are looking for those volunteers that wish to be a part of the preservation process may contribute by assisting with the removal of honeysuckle bushes. If you are wishing to help with this program please dress appropriately (wearing long pants, long sleeves and gloves), and bring loppers if you have them. Those in attendance will have the opportunity to improve one of Southwest Iowa’s best locations to observe spring woodland wildflowers! Pellett Memorial Woods is located just outside of Atlantic, ½ mile north and ¾ mile east of the KJAN radio station (63066 Troublesome Creek Rd). Snacks and drinks will be provided. A rain date is scheduled for September 27, 2026, from 1:00–4:00 p.m. Join us on Saturday, September 26th at 1:00 p.m. for a rewarding experience! The Cass County Conservation Day of Service initiative is made possible through the Day of Service Training & Implementation Fund, a program coordinated by Volunteer Iowa and funded through AmeriCorps. This grant program is designed to build the volunteer capacity of local nonprofits and government organizations. Participating groups receive training in volunteer engagement, develop strategic volunteer management plans, and collaborate with other organizations, culminating in shared service efforts on and around September 11.

As a Guest Services volunteer, you are the friendly face and helping hands that keep The Wanderwood Gardens safe, beautiful, and welcoming for every visiting family! While Guest Services volunteers assist with a variety of tasks throughout the day, our Afternoon Shift plays a critical role in putting the Gardens "to bed" and ensuring our attractions are fresh and ready for the next morning's guests.

Key Closing Duties Include:

Attraction Reset: Stroll through our whimsical activity zones to tidy up, sweep pathways, and reset play elements so everything is in its place.

Cottage Closing: Help close down the Cottage Learning Center, including light sweeping and vacuuming.

Facility Support: Empty trash and recycling receptacles throughout the main areas and assist with a light cleaning/stocking of the visitor restrooms.

Guest Assistance: Answer final visitor questions and share a warm farewell with families as they head home at the end of the day.

Shift Details & Expectations:

Qualifications: Friendly attitude, attention to detail, and ability to perform light physical activity (walking, sweeping, bending).

Attire: Branded Wanderwood Volunteer t-shirt, neat pants or shorts, and comfortable walking shoes.

Onboarding: No prior experience needed! On-the-job training is provided directly by your Guest Services team at the start of your shift.

Lifting or moving of up to 40 lbs is required. Morning and afternoon shifts are available, Monday through Friday. In general, shifts are two hours, but this is flexible. We are looking for Red Panda Ranger Station volunteers. At this station you will greet guests at your station, assist in filling out activity books, and hand out a sticker to each child. There will be 10 stations located around the Zoo.

The Grout Museum District is excited to again partner with Wize Girls to provide mentoring and STEM demonstrations to 13 girls in 6th-8th grade!

Wize Girls is a monthly after school program that promotes hands on learning in science and exploration while also providing empowering mentorship through assisting in learning activities. The Grout Museum District is looking for specifically female volunteers to help assist with this program. This opportunity will begin in October and run through April.

Volunteer actors and tour guides are needed for the Grout Museum Districts Annual Strolling with the Spirits event, a spooky walk through the Waterloo Cemetery. 

Actors will dress up and stand by the grave of a historical figure, telling their story to tour groups. Actors will read from a script rather than memorizing a script. 

Tour guides may dress up, or they can be themselves as they lead small groups to each stop. 

Strolling with the Spirits is scheduled for Saturday, October 10th with tours occurring at 3:00 PM, 7:00 PM, & 10:00 PM.

Join the Grout Museum District by helping to serve as a chaperone at our adult-only Fright Night Prom! 

This is a Halloween Bash located at the Grout Museum with dancing, music, games, and treats for guests. This event is an adults-only celebration blending nostalgictolgic prom energy with classic Halloween atmosphere and a wink toward horror movie fans. 

Volunteers are needed to serve as 'gym-teacher' chaperones to help assist with set-up prior and coordination during the event. Chaperones are welcomed to dress up in their best gym teacher attire, but this is not required.

Local Businesses and organizations provide trick-or-treating for hundreds of kids and their families who will dress up and collect candy as they walk through the Grout Museum. 

Volunteers can help pass out candy, guide families in the right direction, and help create a fun family-friendly atmosphere for all guests.

The audit season is almost upon us! The Grout Museum District is looking for a volunteer to help assist with clerical and administrative tasks 1-2 hours per week. 

This is a great opportunity to help move the mission of the Grout Museum District forward by ensuring financial statements and other important documents are organized and readily available. No accounting or clerical experience is necessary but always welcomed!

At  Kids Can Community Center, our mission is to educate, engage, and inspire children through early childhood care and out-of-school experiences. Founded in 1908 as the Social Settlement Association of Omaha, we changed our name to Kids Can Community Center to better reflect our vision for children and families in our community.  Today we are a state-licensed childcare provider for children ages 6 weeks to 13-years old, offering full-day early childhood education. As an early childhood reader you'll have the opportunity to read in one of our brand-new preschool classrooms!

ISC offers a structured English as a Second Language (ESL) program with four different learning levels:

Lessons focus on practical everyday English, including the alphabet, numbers, colors, emotions, vocabulary, and conversation practice. Seniors advance through each level as their language skills improve.

No teaching experience is required. ISC provides lesson plans, curriculum, worksheets, and classroom materials to make teaching simple and enjoyable.

Recreational Volunteers

Monday–Friday | 12:20 PM–1:30 PM

Help create a fun, welcoming, and engaging environment by leading recreational activities that promote socialization, creativity, and overall well-being for our older adults.

Volunteers may facilitate activities such as arts and crafts, coloring, painting, bowling, bingo, technology assistance, table games, and other recreational programs. Activities vary from day to day based on ISC's monthly programming calendar.

No special experience is required, just enthusiasm, patience, and a willingness to encourage participation.

Punctuality is very important. Activities begin at their scheduled time, so volunteers should arrive 10–15 minutes early to receive instructions, prepare materials, and help ensure a smooth start for participants.

This 12,000-square-foot facility provides care and learning for children ages six weeks to six years through a Montessori-inspired curriculum for children from both MICAH House and the community. 

We would love to welcome your group of volunteers to lead a craft and story time for the children for this year's Day of Caring! Activities like these are a vital part of early childhood development, and your group could play a meaningful role in supporting our kids' growth and creativity.

Your group is welcome to plan and bring your own craft and story activities, or we can have everything prepared—you would just need to come and facilitate the fun! We’d love to have you! 

Volunteer meal donors prepare or purchase a child-friendly dinner for up to 20-25 people and drop it off at the shelter between 4:00–4:30 pm. No serving involved — just drop and go.

Cadets work through a leadership and aerospace education program. They are also provided many opportunities for to train and serve in various areas of emergency services.

Senior Member (Adult Volunteers) supervise (and assist in instructing) cadets in leadership and aerospace education while providing an important volunteer service to our communities. They are provided with numerous opportunities to train and serve in many different ways in emergency services as well.

The Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman coordinates a volunteer ombudsman program, and we are actively seeking volunteers throughout the state of Iowa!  After completing initial certification training, a volunteer ombudsman in our program will make regular visits to an assigned long-term care facility to help serve as a voice for residents, talking with them about their rights, empowering them, and providing advocacy.

Our volunteers are asked to spend a minimum of 3 hours per month in their assigned facility, complete monthly reports, work with long-term care ombudsman staff at the local and state levels, and complete annual continuing education to remain certified.  Visits to facilities are generally unannounced and can be made at any time, any day generally between the hours of 8am-8pm.

For a volunteer who may wish to make an impact but not wish/be able to make visits to facilities, there are more administrative volunteer opportunities available on an individualized basis.

United Way of Mahaska County Volunteer Opportunity – Take Along Program

Help us make sure local students don’t go hungry over the weekend!

United Way of Mahaska County is looking for volunteers to deliver food for our Take Along Program, which provides weekend meals to students identified as food insecure.

What volunteers do:

Pick up food bags at the United Way office (102 1st Ave East). The food will already be packed in plastic sacks and placed in large totes.

Note: totes can be heavy, so we suggest bringing a friend to help lift and load them.

Deliver first to Oskaloosa Elementary. Drop off the full totes, then load up the empty totes from the previous week.

Deliver next to Oskaloosa Middle School. A rolling cart will be available to help transport totes to the main entrance. Pick up the empty totes from the week before.

Return all empty totes to the United Way office.

Help us feed Johnson County by collecting and delivering surplus food! We are looking for Food Rescue Volunteers who pick up wholesome food and deliver it to organizations that feed people here in our community. As a Table to Table volunteer, you get to be the face of food rescue, the face of food security, and the hands and heart that collect wholesome food for our neighbors in Johnson County! Volunteer Iowa’s AmeriCorps VISTA project strengthens organizations across the state that are working to reduce poverty and expand opportunity for Iowans. As the VISTA Member Services Coordinator (VISTA Leader), you will support VISTA members, strengthen host site relationships, and help expand Volunteer Iowa’s capacity to serve communities statewide.

In this full-time leadership role, you will guide VISTA members through their service year by coordinating pre-service onboarding, OSOT, mid-year, and end-of-service activities. You will plan monthly professional development trainings, organize Lunch & Learn sessions, collect member impact stories, and help coordinate statewide Days of Service such as MLK Day, 9/11 Day of Service, and AmeriCorps Week. You will assist with VISTA recruitment by identifying and engaging candidates, attending outreach events, building relationships with colleges and universities, and ensuring VISTA Assignment Descriptions (VADs) are accurate and high-quality. You will track recruitment trends and recommend improvements to strengthen Volunteer Iowa’s candidate pipeline.

This position works closely with the Volunteer Iowa VISTA Program Officer and contributes to long-term planning, project development, and overall program improvement. Volunteer Iowa’s VISTA program is one of the longest-running in the state, with members serving in areas such as education, health, mental health, disaster services, and employment. The team is excited to welcome a new VISTA Leader for the upcoming term.

Applicants MUST have successfully completed one full term as an AmeriCorps VISTA, NCCC, or full-time AmeriCorps member. Returning Peace Corps Volunteers are also eligible. Stop by the United Way of the Midlands office on Friday, September 11 to write notes of support to active military personnel and their families. Volunteers are welcome to stay for the full two-hour opportunity or drop-in for a portion of the time.

Care Initiatives Hospice focuses on providing compassionate and individualized care to families and their loved ones in time of health transitions. Volunteers play a vital role in this more holistic care approach. Hospice volunteers can make a big difference in someone’s life, including your own.

Celebrate Halloween in the gardens! We are extending our hours from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM in partnership with our neighbors at the Dubuque Arboretum and Botantical Garden hosting the Ghouls in the Gardens outdoor movie night. Help build and rehabilitate homes along with Habitat for Humanity staff and hard-working people in our community. Home-owners will work to volunteer on the construction of their own home and will pay a long-term, affordable mortgage for the cost of the house.

Volunteers will help us with the majority exterior and interior construction, demolition and remodeling work at a home. No prior skills or knowledge are necessary! The Science Center of Iowa (SCI) is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to help deliver positive and engaging customer experiences for our guests. In this role, you’ll serve as a friendly and knowledgeable source of information—greeting visitors at the door, guiding them through the check-in and ticketing process, and answering questions about SCI’s programs, exhibits, and events. Volunteers will assist guests throughout the building by providing directions, helping with lost children, and ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for all. You’ll also bring our interactive exhibits to life by demonstrating how they work, offering insights, and sparking curiosity through questions and conversation. Get an exclusive, behind‑the‑scenes look at emergency operations at the Des Moines Airport by joining our Triennial Full‑Scale Exercise in April 2027.

Scenario: A Delta A320 makes an emergency landing with a landing‑gear collapse, triggering a fuel fire and a mass‑casualty incident (MCI). Volunteers will take on victim roles and be transported to area hospitals to help test triage procedures and surge capacity.

The exercise will take place rain or shine. Sign up now—additional details will be shared as the event approaches. Specific volunteer assignments will be provided on the day of the exercise.

You will need to complete the digital waiver (by hitting the "register" button) first before you will be able to complete the registration process.

All volunteers will receive a complimentary lunch.

This Thanksgiving we will be serving and delivering over 4,000 meals. To make this possible, we will be hosting a Food Donation Day on Wednesday, November 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Food Donations will be accepted at Hope Café (1310 6th Ave, Des Moines). Donations can be dropped off inside the facility and individuals are invited to tour Bethel Mission.

Needed food donation items include:

Case of bottled water

Ground beef, pork loin, bacon, ham

Milk, cheese, eggs, butter

#10 cans of green beans or mixed veggies

Condiments: Ranch & Italian salad dressing, ketchup, and mustard

Coffee (ground)

Hope Ministries wants to bless you this Christmas! On Thursday, December 24, Hope Ministries will be delivering Christmas Meals to families and individuals in need around the Des Moines area. Volunteer registration will open on Monday, November 2 and meal order reservations will be available on Monday, November 30.

To make Christmas meal deliveries possible, we are in need of on-site meal assembly volunteers and driver delivery teams to deliver meals in and around the Des Moines Metro. We do ask that all on-site volunteers are above the age of 13 and recommend driver delivery teams for groups with younger children.

City of Muscatine is looking for help converting landscape beds from mulch beds to rock beds. This will include raking and removing existing mulch. Laying of weed barrier matting and laying of rock throughout the landscape beds around the City Hall parking lot.

Our elementary literacy program is gearing up to deliver around 8,000 books to students across our schools - and we need your help to make it happen!

We're looking for enthusiastic volunteers to stamp books, sort by grade level/class, and stack them for easy finding. 

Whether you're a master organizer, speedy stamper, or just someone who wants to make a difference, we would love to have you join us!

Oktoberfest is a fun family friendly event with entertainment, contests, and food! All proceeds will benefit Camp Albrecht Acres so they can provide a unique environment for people with special needs to enjoy new opportunities and challenges in a safe environment adapted specifically for their needs. 

Volunteers are needed as greeters, food service/food prep, ticket sales, game supervision, and clean up/tear down.

Teams from different community groups organize most of our meals, and there are also slots for ad hoc volunteers from 10:30-1:30 or 11:45-1:30. Open Day (ad hoc) volunteers prepare, serve, and clean up after the meal when no pre-formed volunteer team is designated.

Make sure you navigate to 1105 Gilbert COURT, (not Gilbert STREET). If you're driving, park behind the building on the west side; you'll find the volunteer entrance there. If you're arriving by bike or bus, be assured that we have bike racks conveniently located in front and the Route 1 (South Iowa City) bus has several stops within a 1-block radius.

Help our clients reach their goals! As a Youth Mentor, you would be paired with a refugee between the ages of 15 and 24. You will meet 1-2 times per month on your own schedule to help them work toward their specific goals (conversational English, applying for college, etc.). 

Care for children between the ages of 0 and 4 during our Family Literacy Program!

Help one of our programs with their daily office duties. Specific information and tasks are dependent upon office needs at any given time. You can create your own schedule as long as your hours are between 8:30am and 4:30pm Monday through Friday--our regular office hours.
