Volunteer: Ahrens Foundation Tiger Packs Volunteer Grinnell

Program description:

Tiger Packs is an initiative to combat hunger in the Grinnell-Newburg School District. Eligible K-8 students receive a weekly bag of kid-friendly, nutritious food to take home on the weekends while the high school students have access to a food pantry with a variety of healthy snacks and takeaway meals.

 

Location: Grinnell

 

Duties:

·       Help package food items into grocery bags for preK-8th grade students in G-N school district. Approx. 10 food items each packaging in an assembly line style.

·       If able to arrive early volunteers begin unpacking of food from boxes into tubs for packaging. Food arrives at 2:30.

·       Additional duties would tie and add label with a stapler to each bag.

·       Place bags in tubs and lift and move tubs.

Skills required:

●      RSVP volunteers must be 55 years of age or older.

●      Relate well to others and take a team approach.

 

Amount of Time: 1-2 hours/week, every other week, as the volunteer is available (no requirement to attend every packaging session, all assistance is appreciated)

 

Time of Day: Thursdays 3:00-4:30pm; food arrives at 2:30pm. Volunteers may arrive at 2:30pm. This occurs throughout the school year.

The work of the ministry is done by volunteers and funded by free will donations.  We are passionate about helping people get the home furnishings needed to make a house their home. Often times they are starting over and have little. Other times they just need to fill in some gaps. Either way, we want to help. There are many generous people that are willing to donate. There are also a lot of usable home furnishings that end up in the trash. We want to connect both of those to people in need.

·       Help pick up and deliver home furnishings.

·       Greet and assist community members as they visit the store for home furnishings.

 

Skills required:

●      RSVP volunteers must be 55 years of age or older.

●      Ability to help lift and move furniture.

●      Able to keep information confidential

●      Positive attitude and willing to serve families in need

●      Relate well to others and take a team approach.

 

Amount of Time: 3-5 hours

Program Description: Childcare, mentoring, working/leading with specific activities (crafts, projects, etc.), office work, lesson writing, grant writing, organizational efforts (inventory/organizing physical and electronic items/etc.), grant-writing.  LINK Mentoring offers one-on-one mentoring to K-8 students in Grinnell. We are always looking for college students who would like to volunteer to be a mentor to a student. Mentors meet with their students once a week during the lunch hour. During this time the pair eat lunch, play games, make crafts, etc. The mentors serve as positive role models in the students’ lives. We also need volunteers for the after-school and summer programs (our goal is about 1 adult to 10 children, or 2 to 15), as well as community mentors who are ready to act when a child is in need.

 

 

Location: Bailey Park, Fairview, Davis, or Grinnell Middle School

 

Duties:

·       Build relationships with K-8 Students in Grinnell through mentorship activities

·       Provide homework assistance for afterschool program or be a reading buddy

·       Help ensure a safe environment for all

·       Teach specific skills or hobbies; arts and crafts, coding, sports, music, etc

●      Flexible schedule - school year once a week at lunch hour

●      Good communications skills, patience and empathy

Medical Appointment Drivers bring patients to and from critical medical appointments. You will drive between patient homes and their appointed medical facility. Rides are needed within Cass County as well as from surrounding communities and to medical providers in Des Moines, Council Bluff, Carroll, etc.
