Opportunities From: Volunteer Iowa

Seasonal Touch Volunteers will use seasonal decor to decorate the library for the appropriate time of year. We generally like to decorate for Christmas (by Thanksgiving) and summer (to coordinate with the theme) but are open to more possibilities with volunteers who have an eye for this type of work. The seasonal touch volunteers should make a plan and agree upon a time to work during regular library hours.

Read It Volunteers will read and straighten shelves to help make it easier for everyone to find the book they want. Shelf reading is making sure that items are shelved in the right place. Once you’ve completed shelf reading training, you can volunteer at your convenience whenever the library is open. We recommend volunteering at least once a month in order to keep your shelf reading skills sharp.

Clean Team Volunteers learn how to clean shelves, computers, desks, and anything else that needs an occasional cleaning. Once you’ve completed training on how to complete the task and where to find all the supplies, you can work as a Clean Team Volunteer whenever it’s convenient for you during regular library hours.

The Atlantic Public Library is looking for Green Thumb Volunteers. These volunteers will care for plants in and around the library on a rotating schedule. We welcome interest from individuals as well as families or other small groups. Once a schedule is set and you know what to do, Green Thumb Volunteers can come work whenever the library is open.

The library is looking for someone who can assist with basic maintenance at the library. This would be “home handyman” type things (like wall paint touch-ups) that falls outside of the scope of library work but doesn’t require the expertise to call in a professional service like a plumber or electrician. It’s a great opportunity to contribute to the library in an unexpected way.

Do you enjoy planning layouts for printed marketing materials like flyers, bookmarks, and brochures? Put your skills to work to help your local library. The marketing assistant will work with the director to identify projects and create timelines for production. We especially need help preparing materials for the summer library program (March-May) and crafting the annual report (October-November).This is a great way to create a portfolio of work while bringing awareness of library services to the community. Looking to boost your resume with some leadership and supervisory experience? The Atlantic Public Library is looking for an adult with skills in organization and communication to serve as volunteer coordinator for the library. This coordinator will meet regularly with the director and will help to interview and train new volunteers on an as needed basis.

The Atlantic Public Library is working with the Anita and Griswold libraries to assemble (and later distribute) personal hygiene kits. We need volunteers for the following times:

Tuesday, September 15 at 10:30 am to sort donations and set-up packing stations

Tuesday, September 15 at 5:00 pm to pack kits.

Wednesday, September 16 We need a driver or two to shift any left-over supplies from Tuesday between the three libraries so more kits can get packed.

Wednesday, September 16 at 3:00 pm to finish packing kits.

Please contact the library to indicate when you're able to volunteer. This is a good opportunity for groups or families to do together. Children are welcome to participate with a parent or other supervising adult.

Do you enjoy creating short videos, memes, and other fun content for social media? Put your skills to work to help your local library. The volunteer content creator will meet with assigned library staff once a month to discuss library needs and trends and agree to a schedule for content. You make the content and drop it in a shared folder for library staff to schedule for posting.
