Volunteer: Veterans serving Veterans- Hospice volunteer opportunities

Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteer Opportunity
Serve Those Who Served
At WesleyLife Hospice, we believe that those who have worn the uniform share a bond unlike any other. Our Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteers honor that connection by offering presence, understanding, and support to hospice clients who are fellow veterans.
Why Veteran Volunteers Are So Important
Veterans often feel most comfortable sharing their stories, memories, and experiences—especially those from their time in service—with someone who has walked a similar path. Your presence can bring peace, validation, and deep connection during a profoundly meaningful chapter of life.
Support as a Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteer
As a veteran volunteer, you will have the opportunity to:
Companionship & Conversation
Spend time talking, reminiscing, or simply sitting together in quiet companionship with hospice clients who served their country.
Respite for Caregivers
Offer short periods of relief for family caregivers so they can rest, run errands, or take a needed break—knowing their loved one is with someone who understands military life.
Veteran Pinning Ceremonies
Play a key role in our We Honor Veterans program by participating in or assisting with our veteran pinning ceremonies. These ceremonies recognize and honor a veteran’s service, creating a moment of gratitude and dignity for the veteran and their family.
Many volunteers consider these ceremonies one of the most profoundly moving parts of their service.
About Our We Honor Veterans Program
WesleyLife Hospice is proud to participate in We Honor Veterans, a national initiative that focuses on respectful inquiry, compassionate listening, and veteran-centered care.
As part of this program, our veteran volunteers help ensure that every hospice veteran receives:

The honor and recognition they deserve
Opportunities to share their military journey
Specialized emotional support
A meaningful, personalized veteran pinning ceremony
Your shared military background enhances this work in a way no one else can.
Flexible Scheduling That Fits Your Life
Whether you’re available once a month or weekly, we’ll work with your schedule. Even small amounts of time can have a lasting impact.
Where We Serve
WesleyLife Hospice provides care in Pella and surrounding communities, including Boone, Dallas, Jasper, Marion, Marshall, Polk, Story, and Warren counties. Many clients are located at the Cottages in Pella, but we meet veterans wherever they call home.
Hear from Lindsey, a WesleyLife Volunteer
"Being a volunteer for WesleyLife Hospice means the world to me. I’ve been through hospice with family members, and now I can make the experience better for others. The best part is being there for someone who might not have anyone and letting them know they’re not alone."
Ready to Serve Your Fellow Veterans?
Your military experience can bring comfort, companionship, and honor to veterans in their final chapter of life.

Volunteer: Food Rescue Volunteer – Bidwell Pantry

Every pound of food you rescue is a meal for a family in need.

When grocery stores have surplus food, you help make sure it never goes to waste — and never goes far. As a Food Rescue Volunteer, you'll pick up donations from local retailers and bring them directly to the Bidwell Pantry, where families in our community are counting on what you carry through the door.

This is a great fit for someone who wants a consistent, active role with a tangible impact they can see every single week.

What you'll do: Meet at the Bidwell Pantry, then head out with a staff member or fellow volunteer to nearby grocery stores and retailers. You'll help load donated food into the vehicle, return to the pantry to unload and properly store items, and keep a quick record of what was collected. You're back at the pantry and done by 10:00 AM — a great way to make a real difference before your day gets started.

When we need you: Monday through Friday, 8:00–10:00 AM

Choose one day per week that works consistently with your schedule. Regular volunteers are especially valuable — stores get to know you, and the relationships you build make the work even smoother over time.

What you bring:

Age 18 or older Ability to lift and carry food items A commitment to showing up on your chosen day — families plan their week around what we bring in

Why it matters: The Bidwell Pantry serves around 130 families every single day who are experiencing food insecurity in Des Moines. Food rescue pickups are one of the most direct ways volunteers keep the shelves stocked and the pantry running. You're not just helping out — you're part of the supply chain that makes it work.

Questions: Contact Missy Reams at missy@familiesforward.org or by phone at 515-989-8404 or by text at 515-346-8895.

Volunteer: Guardians for Mid-Step Services Memeber

Volunteers Needed to Serve as Guardians for Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Mid-Step Services, Inc. is a Not For Profit dedicated to providing residential, vocational, educational, and recreational services to people with intellectual disabilities to help them reach their highest potential.  We are seeking volunteers that would be willing to serve as Guardians for some of the individuals we serve.  A Guardian is a court appointed substitute decision maker for a protected person: individuals who are incapable of making decisions about issues like medical care, residential placement, and other important personal matters.  Family members, friends, or other supporting individuals typically serve in this role; however, some of the individuals we serve do not have friends or family that are willing or capable of assisting them as their Guardian.  We’re looking for caring community members to help.

As a Guardian, a volunteer would be expected to get to know the protected person, understand their needs or problems, and seek information relevant to making informed decisions on their behalf.  Once a year, the Guardian is required to provide the Court with a status report on their protected person.  Serving as a protected person’s Guardian does not impose financial responsibility for the protected person or make the Guardian liable for the actions of the protected person.

All protected persons needing Guardians are currently residing with and receiving services from Mid-Step Services.  MSS staff are available to assist with questions and guidance for volunteers both before and after appointment as a Guardian.

For more information on volunteering to be a Guardian or to be matched with an individual needing decision-making assistance, please visit: https://www.midstepservices.com/volunteer-today-2/.

By sorting the books on Wednesday, May 13th, it will make it easier for the community to navigate the room in a safe and efficient way ensuring they find the age appropriate books for the youth they serve during the distribution days.

Volunteers will continued to be needed during distribution days (starting Thursday, May 14th) to help keep the room tidy and assist community members as they come in to pick up their books. The final shift on May 19th will be a clean-up shift.

Volunteers are welcome to sign-up for more than one shift!

Questions? Please contact Sarah Underwood, Volunteer Engagement Manager, at sarah.underwood@unitedwaydm.org.

Volunteer: Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Needed

The mission of the National Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Association, together with its state and local members, is to support and promote court-appointed volunteer advocacy so that every abused or neglected child can be safe, establish permanence and have the opportunity to thrive.

What We Do

The Iowa Court Appointed Special Advocate Program recruits, trains and supports community volunteers to serve as an effective voice in court for abused and neglected children, strengthening efforts to ensure that each child is living in a safe, permanent and nurturing home. The Court Appointed Special Advocate is typically assigned one case at a time and does a variety of things to promote the child's best interests: information gathering, assessment, facilitation, monitoring and advocacy. The judge assigning the CASA to a case has ordered them to become familiar with all aspects of the child's life. They are expected to keep in regular contact with the child to develop a relationship that allows them to understand and communicate the child's needs and wishes. Each CASA generally is assigned one child or sibling group at a time and typically stays with their assigned case until the child's permanency is established and the case is closed. Some of a CASA's most important duties are to maintain contact with and collect information from the child's parents; the attorneys and guardians ad litem involved with the case; HHS workers; and, foster parents, therapists, teachers, doctors, relatives and anyone else who has knowledge of the child's situation.

CASAs are required to regularly submit reports to the Court that present the facts of the case, that describe how the Court's orders are being followed and that offer recommendations regarding the child's best interests. Please visit https://hhs.iowa.gov/family-community/casa for more information on becoming a CASA volunteer.

Volunteer: Faulkes Heritage Woods Restoration

Join the City of Marion, Trees Forever, and INHF at Faulkes Heritage Woods in Marion for an afternoon of removing invasive Japanese barberry from the woodland understory. The natural occurrence of the 2020 derecho devastated the 110 acres of white oaks — a tree that takes generations to grow into the mighty oaks we all admire. The downed trees created canopy gaps that allow barberry to flourish, where it shades out native spring ephemerals and competes with young white oak seedlings — key species needed to rebuild the resilient oak canopy that once kept invasive plants in check.

We hope you’ll join us as a community to help us ensure that future generations get to once again enjoy a stroll amongst the mighty white oaks. We'll start the afternoon with a half-mile hike to warm up before we get to work. After the restoration work, we'll regroup at Goldfinch Tap+Eatery to celebrate over a hard-earned beverage.

**If weather conditions are unfavorable on April 3, the event will be rescheduled for Friday, April 10, from 1–4 p.m.

ABOUT FAULKES HERITAGE WOODS

Sisters Alice Smith and Elizabeth Barry, along with their nieces, Nancy and Cynthia Thompson, donated a portion of the land value of what is now known as Faulkes Heritage Woods to INHF in 1999. The habitat was named in honor of their grandmother and great-grandmother, Alice Faulkes. Sticking to the family's wishes of increasing awareness around conservation needs, INHF transferred the land to the City of Marion, ensuring it would become the beloved public park it is today — protected in perpetuity through an INHF conservation easement.

This 110-acre wildlife haven has not only provided refuge for woodland creatures and a favorite hiking destination for the Marion community, but has also served as an outdoor classroom for nearby colleges and schools focused on environmental education.

Learn more and register to volunteer at https://www.inhf.org/events/faulkes-heritage-woods-restoration

What to expect:

We’ll be using various hand tools (handsaws or loppers) to manually cut invasive brush so native species can thrive. No experience necessary. Instruction will be provided onsite, but you can view a how-to video ahead of time here.Participants will work to remove plants with thorns.

Volunteer: Veteran-to-Veteran Comfort and Companionship Volunteer (Hospice)

Honoring those who served by serving them now.

Are you a veteran who feels called to serve those who once served our nation as you did?

Could you offer companionship to a veteran who would value someone who understands respect, service, and shared stories?

Would you like to help create moments of dignity and connection for fellow veterans in their final chapter?

Direct Care Volunteers who serve veteran patients offer meaningful companionship, connection, and support to those who have served our country as they navigate the challenges of serious illness and end‑of‑life care. Whether sharing conversation, reading together, assisting with light tasks, or providing respite for veteran caregivers, these volunteers help create moments of dignity, comfort, and recognition. Guided by an individualized care plan and working closely with hospice staff, volunteers bring compassion, reliability, and emotional maturity to every visit while honoring each veteran’s unique experiences, respecting family beliefs, and participating in ongoing training to ensure high‑quality, veteran‑centered care.

As part of our We Honor Veterans program, veteran‑to‑veteran volunteers play a vital role in recognizing the service and sacrifice of those in their final chapter through both pinning ceremonies and the Final Salute. Pinning ceremonies offer a heartfelt moment of recognition, allowing veterans to honor one another with shared understanding and deep respect. After a veteran patient has passed, the Final Salute becomes a powerful gesture of gratitude—veterans standing together to honor a fellow servicemember’s life, legacy, and duty. Through these traditions, volunteers ensure that every veteran receives the dignity, acknowledgment, and brotherhood they have earned, even in their final moments and beyond.

Volunteer: Hospice Volunteers Needed

Hospice Volunteers perform many important duties. Whether providing companionship to a patient, bereavement support, administrative/office work or Veteran-to-Veteran — volunteers play a vital role that enables Heartland Hospice to meet the needs of our patients, their families and the community.

Our volunteers are essential to providing the level of care and support that patients and their families expect from hospice care helping to make Heartland Hospice one of the leading hospice providers in the region.

Volunteers lend an ear to the patient when they express themselves. Oftentimes their presence alone brings comfort and support. Hospice volunteers also enjoy spending time with the patient, and participating in some of their favorite pastimes, like playing chess, cards, or watching TV.

Whether you volunteer in one of our local offices or provide companionship to our patients, you'll be part of a valuable team that helps families navigate a difficult time. We are also looking for pet therapy owners who can share their pets with our patients.

For more information about our volunteer opportunities, please contact Heartland Hospice at (563) 359-3540 or email at scott.southward@heartlandhospice.com.
