The Bloom Senior Center in Glenwood, Iowa provides a friendly place for community members to socialize, share a meal and connect with friends. Bloom Senior Center volunteers are like family and are important to the day-to-day function of the Bloom Senior Center.
Volunteer Position Descriptions:
Nutrition Support:
· Open Bloom Senior Center M-F, make coffee/beverages, check with delivery person for home delivered meals to ensure everything is ready, check delivery sheet, contact Connections Area Agency on Aging if something is missing for the day’s meals both homebound and congregate, take temps of food, turn on dishwasher, sanitizer, take temperature strips/record, 10:45 am get homebound meals ready; 11:00 am/set up tables according to count for congregate meals, serve clients lunch and clean-up.
· Check on client if signed up for congregate meal and didn’t attend.
· Distribute menu calendars.
· Take reservations for meals for next day by 9:30 a.m.; notify Connections Area Agency on Aging of meal count.
· Socialization during mealtimes.
Food Pantry:
· Sunday evening volunteer picks up unsold, donated Panera Bread (Council Bluffs) bread, bagels, and baked goods through Day-End Dough-Nation program.
· Monday morning sort donated Panera Bread into packages for community members to pick up from Bloom Senior Center.
· Once a month volunteer picks up donated food from Intercultural Senior Center, 5545 Center Street, Omaha, Nebraska. Food is bagged by Bloom Senior Center volunteers. Clients who signed up for a bag come to pick up and volunteers assist in taking bags of food to client’s car. Reminder calls are made to clients who didn’t pick up bag.
· Collection box for food donations for Mills County Ministerial Association.
· Sign up “special/big” meals for holidays.
· Provide appropriate contacts for family checks when possible signs of elder abuse.
· Assist with referrals to/from Mills County Public Health.
Reception/Special Events:
· Answer phones.
· Inform clients of important topics and events.
· Set up, work and clean up for special events such as 3rd Saturday morning Breakfasts (free will offering), Root Beer Floats during Farmer’s Market and Garage Sales. Proceeds benefit all of the activities of Bloom Senior Center.
· Provide appropriate contacts for family checks when possible signs of elder abuse.
· Assist with referrals to/from Mills County Public Health.
· Assist Mills County Public Health once month for blood pressure checks.
· Attendance at monthly Inservice meetings.
· Maintenance duties of Bloom Senior Center which include changing filters, taking out trash, pull weeds, spray.
These assignments provide socialization for seniors. Whether engaging seniors in group activities, learning a new skill, or nutrition, each assignment contributes directly to seniors.
