Volunteer: Share Knowledge, Connections, and Resources with Students on the Social Platform for Social Mobility

Only 3% of high-performing, under-resourced students end up in a great first career experience. On our social platform, professionals like you can help change that.

Here's how:

1. Sign up via your computer at my.backrs.com or by downloading the Backrs mobile app from the Apple App or Google Play Stores.

2. Tell us a little about your background and experiences by completing your profile. This takes 5 mins. (Up to 15 if you'd like to give students more details about your hobbies and interests.)

3. We add you to identity-based, regional, university, and career-path Affinity Networks where you can connect with students you're well-positioned to support.

4. In Networks, you can answer students' questions, post resources or job/internship opportunities, and share insights into your college and career journey by responding to Backstage Pass posts. Though each of these actions takes a few minutes, they all have meaningful impacts on young people.

5. If you'd like to play a more involved role in a student's journey, you can join their panel of backrs. This enables you to view their goals, post on their personal feed, schedule Zoom check-ins, and even contribute to their Flourish Fund. It's a great choice for those looking to offer low-lift, relationship-driven support.

Best way to see how convenient and rewarding being a backr really is? Give it a try, commitment-free:

Or get the Backrs mobile app: Apple App Store or Google Play Store

Our Impact Model

Research shows that cross-class relationships are the biggest predictors of social mobility. And financial margin increases the odds of college persistence four-fold.

We partner with schools and youth organizations to recruit committed high school and college students into our community. Then, by removing the barriers the keep well-resourced adults from connecting with under-resourced young people, our technology builds bridges across socioeconomic strata, enabling people like you to empower students like Diego R.

Diego R. joined Backrs so he could pursue his dream of becoming a biomedical engineer. Thanks to his talent, hard work, and the support he's received from his backrs, he's well on his way to making that dream a reality. As he explained:

"My brother was born with Chronic Kidney Disease. He’s the man who gives me the strength to pursue Biomedical Engineering and become an accomplished technician. I strive to make the lives of those who suffer like him better. I want to be the change he needs to be healthy."

All of the students in our community are driven to build a better world; when they're given the resources to do so, everyone around them benefits.

The Backrs Experience

Being a great backr isn’t about grand gestures or having all the answers. It’s about the small things: sharing a word of encouragement. Passing along a helpful resource. Making an introduction. These actions make a big difference--take it from some of our current backrs:

"As a backr, I love the opportunity to support and mentor my three proteges as they grow and develop. I feel grateful to be able to guide and shape their future in a positive way. Through Backrs, I have been able to watch them grow into confident and capable individuals, and it has given me a sense of purpose and fulfillment that I can't put into words. It's made a tremendous difference in my life to see them achieve their goals and know that I played a role in helping them get there."

- Ahmed Dawood, Marketer at Apple

"Backrs gives me an opportunity to utilize my expertise to provide mentoring and support to students. Even though my students are a couple time zones away, I have the flexibility to connect with them on my time and have been dedicated to checking my app weekly at minimum to engage in conversations and answer questions. Its exciting to celebrate their wins and talk about future plans. Mentoring was very impactful in my life so it gives me joy to give back in this way."

- Lori Hunt, College Provost

Volunteer: Help your neighbors on their worst day! Respond to home fires.

When disaster strikes our neighbors here in the Quad Cities, Red Cross Disaster teams respond to provide comfort, financial assistance, and resources.  The number one disaster in the Quad Cities (and nationwide) is the single-family home fire.  When a family is displaced by a fire, they are likely to be scared and anxious...and our volunteers are there to help.  Our local disaster volunteers have also helped QC families impacted by flooding or tornado damage.  This is local assistance for local disasters, so no out-of-town travel is required. We provide free training to make sure you know what to do, and we send volunteers in small teams for their mutual safety and support. You decide what days and shifts you will be available "on call."   When you're "on call," our volunteer dispatcher will call you if there is a family impacted by disaster who needs your help.  If you want to KNOW you are making a difference when someone really needs you, this is the volunteer opportunity for you.

Call Connie Dudgeon at 309-207-5266 for more information, or sign up as a new volunteer at:

Each volunteer caller telephones their assigned companions once a week for a call lasting 15 - 30 minutes for a duration of at least 8 weeks. Typically, two companions are assigned to each volunteer. Volunteers may start conversations related to the interest of the companion, discuss current events, have a movie or book discussion, or reminisce about the past, etc. Time commitment is a minimum of 30 minutes per week.

Volunteer: Volunteer Drivers

We have a program called Youth Healthy Relationships. The program is weekly for 8 consecutive weeks. The youth, ages 11 - 18, are there for 2 hours per week. They may be located in Polk county or even surrounding counties, such as Story, Dallas, etc. Plan for 4-5 hours daily when you volunteer for the total time spent. The location varies weekly as we meet in the places where the youth want to eat so we can feed them and/or we choose a local library room that's large enough for the group. You will receive the update 1 week before so you will know each week where you're headed.

As a driver, you will need to pass some background checks and will have to be clear on this background check for pedophilia or other sex-related crimes, you will have to have a clean driving record (we will check MVR and you will need to be willing to accept payment for the MVR check). You will need to have $100/$300 liability insurance and will need to have comp/coll coverage on your vehicle.

This program helps youth of color who are often children of Black women domestic violence survivors by giving them a knowledge base for healthy relationships, thereby aiding in CDC-encouraged strategies for prevention of future DV.

If you have further questions at any point in the process, you are welcome to reach out for additional questions at courageousaccess@gmail.com. We look forward to hearing from you!

Volunteer: Encore Cafe Volunteer @ St. Mark's UMC

Thank you for your interest in helping at Encore Café at our St. Mark's United Methodist location!  We are looking for a couple more volunteers to add to this great team we have.  We aim to have 5 volunteers per day and also need subs that we can call in the event of sickness, travel or appt. times that come up for other volunteers.  This means that you probably would not need to commit to helping every Tuesday, and you can sign up monthly for those that work for you or have spaces that need filled.

What we like to do is have prospective volunteers to come and visit an Encore Café first to get an idea of what Encore Café IS,  what we do and how our mealtimes are run—to make sure it’s something that they are (still) interested in helping out with, as well as get to know them a bit as well as talk about availability.

In general, we set up around 10:15 and serve from 11:30-12:30.  We would also treat you to a fabulous lunch as that is a perk of being a volunteer as well, we all eat together about 12:15 before we clean up. We are generally cleaned up and out of there anywhere between 1 and 1:30. (Volunteers wear jeans and comfy shoes, just so you know.)

Tasks:

Provide a happy and warm atmosphere by greeting participants and making them feel welcome. Serve and assist participants as necessary. Clean and sanitize table after meal service. Assist in setting up and taking down serving line. etc. Follow directions of Site Coordinator or person in charge. Maintain proper cleanliness and follow all food safety guidelines. Complete food employee/volunteer illness reporting form annually

Skills:

Volunteer: Sandwiches that Save

A Hunger Free Iowa

When Covid-19 hit, Iowa DHS took a look at food insecurity and saw it fit to increase SNAP benefits, also known as food stamps, to the maximum allowable per household. This meant that those relying on SNAP received a minimum of $95 more than they were pre-pandemic. This made a huge impact each month and relieved the stress of worrying about food insecurity. As of April 2022, SNAP benefits have gone back down to rates pre-pandemic while food prices are still ascending. In the past month, we have noticed food insecurity in our home on the rise. The number of individuals signing up for food recovery has doubled, and sometimes tripled, since the decrease in benefits. While there has been an increase in our sign-up lists, there has been a significant decrease in the amount of food we are receiving.

We need your help to ensure our residents are receiving the food they need to be successful. We are needing quick and accessible meals to offer residents on Monday’s, Wednesday’s, and Friday’s for food recovery. Making peanut butter and jelly, meat and cheese, or any other sandwiches is a great way to support our folks who are signing up to receive food on these days. The sandwiches can be dropped off to us on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will be directly in the hands of those in need the very next day. 30 sandwiches is an appropriate amount that allows for everyone on the food recovery list to receive one.

Volunteer: More than a meal - Creating community and fighting food insecurity

Signing up to sponsor and participate in a Tuesday night dinner will give you a chance to directly connect with our residents and our cause. Our #MoreThanAMeal program provides not only a hearty meal to all 140 of our residents but also creates a sense of community, turning our campus into a home for the folks who live here. In order to provide this support for our community members, we rely on a sponsorship of 250 dollars; this allows us to provide a dignified home cooked meal made with love. Volunteer: Create Change with Clean Clothes

Clean clothing is a basic human need, not a luxury. At the YSHC, we do have an on-site laundry facility; however, many of our folks, because of transportation or financial barriers, are unable to supply the quarters needed for a load of laundry. We are grateful for the community support we have received in regards to laundry supplies, providing us with ample laundry pods and dryer sheets for laundry kits; however, many folks are unable to use these supplies due to not having the quarters needed for a wash and a dry. One load of laundry is equal to eleven quarters and our dream is that each residents will have access to a laundry kit (twelve quarters, a laundry pod and a dryer sheet) when in need. Would you consider holding a spare change drive at your work, with your friends and neighbors, or reaching out to your children’s sports team or school? Spare change and all other donations can be dropped off anytime between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday or between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Please Contact Nicholas.drahozal@dmymca.org if you have any questions!

Volunteer: Birthday Bash at the YSHC

Birthdays are a big part of what home means at the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus. Every residents receives a birthday card signed by staff on their birthday but we are thinking bigger and we need your help! We dream of having a Birthday Bash each month that includes cake and other fun birthday activities for members of our community. Many of our residents are faced with financial barriers that prevent them from enjoying cake on their birthday; or, they don’t have family to celebrate with, so we are excited to show them how much our community cares through this event. To host a Birthday Bash, you would need to sponsor the funds/make 140 pieces of cake (or cupcakes) as we want to ensure all residents are invited. If you prefer, we can purchase the cake for you for a $50 dollar contribution. You can also bring in fun party supplies (table clothes, themed paper plates, streamers, etc.) to decorate and really make it feel like a birthday party. Upon arrival, you and your group of 5 or less will be able to decorate, serve, and get to know some amazing folks that call the YSHC home. Please Contact Nicholas.drahozal@dmymca.org if you have any questions!

Volunteer: Garden Restoration at the Habuerg Estate

The grounds of the Hauberg Estate (c.1911) in Rock Island, Illinois represents a masterwork of pioneer landscape architect Jens Jensen (1860-1951).  Even with most of his work found in the Midwest, few exist; this is especially true of his residential designs, which are threatened by changes in modern land development and urban sprawl.  Jens Jensen designed around 350 private estates, but only around 35 exist with their complete design largely intact.  The Hauberg estate has been own by the City of Rock Island since 1956, yet as with many open green spaces and ravines within the Quad Cities these areas have become overtaken with invasive species.  One of the great things about this restoration project is the great level of documentation.  Not only do we have Jens Jensen’s plans for the grounds, but hundreds of photographs of landscape plants and features, that capture many decades of the grounds.

We have been working to repurpose and restore the 3-acre terraced fruit and vegetable gardens at the Hauberg Estate that would allow it to be used as a Children’s Art Garden for Quad City youth.  The Estate also has al spring with 5 ponds, 5-acre forest, 1-acre meadow, and 3-acre athletic field.  The food garden is the largest designed by the father of American landscape architect Jens Jensen.  The Friends of Hauberg Civic Center Foundation has been partnering with local educational non-profits to help set up and foster educational youth gardening programs and STEAM programing in our local communities. Local students in the food education cooperative programs learn about organic farming and gardening, ecology, nutrition, and food development through hands-on instruction.  The STEAM focused programs would include engineering projects, soil ecology, pollination and insect ecology, horticulture, plant morphology and identification.  Early food education is seen as way to engage young people with how and where their food comes from and making that connection to healthy food choices.  Incorporated into the Jensen Terraced food garden design with be a children’s art garden.  Each of the original terraces will have a theme, the top terrace with the grape arbor and the edges will have vignettes of Illinois children’s authors, the next terrace will have a pollination garden with raised vegetable beds and cut flower beds, third terrace will be fairy garden walk set in historic varieties of pear trees.  The fourth terrace is a mediation path set in the Jensen design with historic plum trees.  The last terrace is given John Hauberg’s Indian name of Standing Bear Trail.  This is set in antique peach and cherry trees and will have wigwams and other nature play settings with the terrace and large edge of the garden.

When the terrace garden is completed, the rest of the landscape would be to be able to use the rest of the estate for STEAM based projects of all kinds.   The estate has a large variety of ecological niches (spring with 5 ponds, 5-acre forest, 1 acre meadow, 3-acre terraced food garden, and 3-acre athletic field) this is the is the perfect spot for almost any type of STEAM project you can think up. The repurposed children’s garden we believe will be a huge draw for the Quad Cities.  Using the themed terraces, children’s authors and using historic Jensen design will help to make bring people to the Hauberg Estate but will also help to showcase the wonderful amenities of the Quad Cities.

The FOHCCF has the original Jensen landscaping plans for the Hauberg Terraced Gardens.   The original design has rows of apple, pear, plum, crabapple, cherry and peach trees, but no varieties are given, we have worked with local landscape architects and horticulturalists to make these selections.  Susanne Hauberg died in 1942 and that after her death, the gardens were neglected.  Most of the hardscape is intact, sets of red cement stairs have been uncovered, and the foundations and brick floors need a little work, but surprisingly intact.

We tend to coordinate the restoration on Thursdays but could make other days work for your group

Choose to change the world for homeless pets

There are few things as rewarding as helping a homeless animal find a new home. When you volunteer at the ARL, you make a difference for homeless animals AND the people  choosing to adopt them.

Volunteering can take a variety of forms. From serving as an ambassador spreading awareness in the community, to providing enrichment and socialization for an animal, to training other volunteers on how to support our mission, volunteer team members give their time and talent to change the lives of thousands of pets each year. We could not do what we do without you, and we have unmet needs waiting for more talented volunteers to help us fulfill our mission!!!

ARL volunteers are  committed to furthering our mission to protect the welfare of animals, preserve the human-animal bond, and prevent the overpopulation of companion animals.

We would love to have you on our team!

Volunteer: Hospice Companion Volunteer - Shenandoah, Iowa

AseraCare volunteers bring many gifts, talents, interests, and experiences to the hospice program. We have an immediate need for hospice patient companion volunteers in the Shenandoah area.

Companion volunteers play a vital role in the hospice care team by:

Visiting on a routine basis for friendship and conversation Increasing socialization for patients living at home Listening to and supporting families as they care for their loved one Providing brief periods of time off for family caregivers

We ask for a minimum commitment of 2 hours per week when volunteering, but always welcome additional time if the volunteer has some to spare! We hope that you will be forming a relationship with assigned patients. We ask that you plan to make a commitment of at least 1 year for this volunteer assignment.

Reliable transportation to/from your assignment is required. Companion volunteers must provide a current driver’s license and proof of insurance. Volunteers should be physically able to complete the tasks assigned to them. All hospice volunteers are required to complete a volunteer orientation. They must also pass a criminal background check tuberculosis test. All required training and services are paid for by AseraCare. Volunteers must be 18 years old to be considered.

Hospice is a program of palliative care and supportive services for terminally ill patients and their families. A care team that includes volunteers work together to provide services. All team members are trained in providing emotional support to the patient and family. The direct care hospice team goes wherever the patient lives to provide services.

Hospice neither prolongs life nor hastens death. Rather, its goal is to affirm life and encourage the patient to maintain control over decisions that affect his or her quality of life. Support is available 24 hours a day. Hospice care is ready to meet the ever-changing needs experienced by that patient and their family.

If you have suffered a significant loss, we encourage you to wait at least one year to provide direct service or public relations support. Bereavement resources are available to our volunteers who need them.

Volunteer: Fold and Size Clothing Donations

AFIL loves to provide items to our local Veterans.

The community is great about donating these items, but we need your help going through them and getting them to the right place.

If you are looking to help out in your community but not really wanting to lift a whole lot, this job is for you!

AFIL gets donations on almost a daily basis. With so much coming in, we do not always get through it all each week. This is where you come in.

We need help sorting through donated clothing, bedding, and other smaller items.

This includes removing any items with stains, wiping down and test kitchen items, folding shirts, jeans, shorts, and sweat pants. After these items are folded, we need to know what size they are and have them put on the correct shelves.

If you have a heart for Veterans and want to help out in your community, then we would love to meet you. Please respond to this need and we will set up a time to have you tour the location. After the tour, if the cause fits, you can join in and further our mission of making lives better for our local Veterans. Thank you:)

Volunteer: Construction Worker

Do you have a heart for Veterans? Do you have an urge to lend a hand to those in need? Do you like to construct things that will help build better lives for someone else. If this is you, we NEED your help!

AFIL does home modifications to help Veterans better get around in their homes and feel safe moving from one point in their house to another. The freedom that these modifications gives to our local Veterans is worth all the sweat and dust stirred up during the transformation of these spaces. Not to mention, the smiles and appreciation these Veterans have for the finished product is breath taking and humbling.

Please come and join Tim in these transforming adventures of modifying homes for our local, well deserving, Veterans!

If you have any certificates in a specific trade dealing with construction and remodeling, we could use your skills.

If you do not have any certificates in construction trades but are willing to help with demo and re-construction, we could use your skills and help.

This job requires heavy lifting, painting, drywalling, flooring, demo work, and framing.

If you are a student under the age of 18, there will be a waiver that your legal guardian/parent will need to sign.

Worker will need to provide their own gloves and work apparel (boots, clothes fit for physical labor).

These modifications are life changing and your help is appreciated.

Thank you for your time, enthusiasm, talent, and caring.

Agency: Americans For Independent Living

Do you have a heart for Veterans? Do you have an urge to lend a hand to those in need? Do you like to construct things that will help build better lives for someone else. If this is you, we NEED your help!

Volunteer: Help Needed! DBQ Shovel Crew! Can You Dig It!

Volunteer on the DBQ Shovel Crew this winter! To help, complete this survey https://arcg.is/0KmSP!

As a DBQ Shovel Crew volunteer you will be paired with a resident in need of assistance who is not physically able to remove snow and ice from their city sidewalk and do not have other resources to remove the snow and ice such as neighbors, friends, or a hired service. We are seeking volunteers who can help throughout the winter season.  The commitment is caring for assigned addresses all winter.

We are all pedestrians at some point in the day, whether walking to a car, the bus, to work, or just in your neighborhood. Your help in keeping sidewalks clear after snow and ice events is a meaningful way to help neighbors in need and the community!

Want to volunteer, but in need of snow and ice removal equipment? We may be able to help! Sign up and we’ll follow up with you on getting access to shovels and deicer salt.

If you need help shoveling this snow season or know someone who does, please contact Rob McDonald with the City of Dubuque Engineering Department at (563) 589-4159. Rob will connect qualifying individuals in need with a DBQ Shovel Crew volunteer.

Please complete this survey https://arcg.is/0KmSP first and then RESPOND to this opportunity (blue button at the top of this post).  We required that all volunteers sign up for an account with Volunteer DBQ, this streamlines the communication process so we can help more people!  When you first sign up for an account on Volunteer DBQ you are only required to put Name, Phone, and Email, which makes the whole process able to be completed in less than 5 minutes!

Once you are paired with a resident/address, we will be in touch with you to sign our volunteer waiver. Thank you!

Volunteer: Sort and Pack Food Items for Families in need!

Each week the Food Bank of Iowa receives food donations that need to be sorted and organized before being distributed to 700 partner agencies. Volunteers can help get the food to our agencies and the Iowans that need it most by participating in this process! Examples of projects include sorting bulk bins of boxed pasta into boxes for inventory, checking quality and dates on food drive items and categorizing them, packing boxes of food or bags of fresh produce, and more!

Key Responsibilities:

Check condition of donated items, including dates, to ensure safety of consumption. Sort and place checked items into the appropriate categories or boxes or bins. Packing food in boxes at specified weights and loading boxes onto pallets. Bagging produce, such as potatoes and apples, at specified weights. Break down cardboard for recycling and dispose of trash.

Support/Training:  Volunteers will be given instructions upon arrival, and will have staff support throughout their shift.

Qualifications:

Able to stand, move, bend, and lift in warehouse environment. Able to read printed dates on packaging. Able to safely use box cutter, packing tape dispenser, and other packing tools as needed.
