AseraCare volunteers bring many gifts, talents, interests, and experiences to the hospice program. We have an immediate need for hospice patient companion volunteers in the Shenandoah area.

Companion volunteers play a vital role in the hospice care team by:

We ask for a minimum commitment of 2 hours per week when volunteering, but always welcome additional time if the volunteer has some to spare! We hope that you will be forming a relationship with assigned patients. We ask that you plan to make a commitment of at least 1 year for this volunteer assignment.

Reliable transportation to/from your assignment is required. Companion volunteers must provide a current driver’s license and proof of insurance. Volunteers should be physically able to complete the tasks assigned to them. All hospice volunteers are required to complete a volunteer orientation. They must also pass a criminal background check tuberculosis test. All required training and services are paid for by AseraCare. Volunteers must be 18 years old to be considered.

Hospice is a program of palliative care and supportive services for terminally ill patients and their families. A care team that includes volunteers work together to provide services. All team members are trained in providing emotional support to the patient and family. The direct care hospice team goes wherever the patient lives to provide services.

Hospice neither prolongs life nor hastens death. Rather, its goal is to affirm life and encourage the patient to maintain control over decisions that affect his or her quality of life. Support is available 24 hours a day. Hospice care is ready to meet the ever-changing needs experienced by that patient and their family.

If you have suffered a significant loss, we encourage you to wait at least one year to provide direct service or public relations support. Bereavement resources are available to our volunteers who need them.

From caring for a horse through saddling and grooming to testing her skills on the trails and in the covered arena, girls are learning the stand tall and calm

The Salvation Food Pantry is held every Wednesday at our Family Services Center 100 Kirkwood Blvd, Davenport.  Hours are 9am to 2pm.  I am looking for able bodied people that can lift up to 10 lbs. If you can only work twice a month, that is acceptable.  

The volunteer helps the guests shop for their items. It is a very easy position and very rewarding.

Friendly House is looking for volunteers for our food pantry! Our customer choice food pantry is open from 11 am - 1 pm weekdays and works well with two volunteers per shift, so sign up with a friend! Friends of the Family is looking for individuals who are interested in cleaning housing unit's for clients previously experiencing homelessness. Cleaning includes but is not limited to dusting, sweeping, mopping vacuuming, etc. 

This opportunity is wonderful for someone who would like to be able to complete this on an as needed basis in the Waterloo area. 

Empower House is looking for additional volunteers to assist in the operations of our daily programming (Tuesday-Thursday 9am-3pm).  We are hopeful to find people who are able to volunteer on a regular basis (ideally 1x per week).  However, Empower House is a very flexible and relaxed environment, and we'd love to have you no matter what your schedule looks like- even if that is only for half a day.  Volunteer tasks include assisting members (brain injury survivors) with completion of operational Clubhouse tasks, such as writing thank you notes, prepping lunch, and basic cleaning tasks.  Basic computer skills helpful.  Staff, members, and volunteers all work side by side to complete the daily tasks, so you will never be without support as a volunteer! We are looking for passionate, dedicated, fun people to serve on our events committee.  No previous event experience required.  Evening meetings approximately once a month- held both virtually and in person.  This committee helps plan and run our major annual fundraiser, held in October.  This event is a casual, family friendly environment.  The committee also helps plan some other minor events throughout the year, but the main focus is on our annual fundraiser in October.  Join the fun!

Cedar Valley Makers (CVM) is a non-profit, member organization with a focus on learning and making. We promote collaborative learning, creative design and manufacturing (making) for people of all ages and skill levels.  We’re able to accomplish this by providing access to tools, machines and training inside our makerspace.

Volunteers are needed to assist with our community educational events that focus on learning by doing, design thinking and entrepreneurial spirit. As a volunteer you’ll be a learner and mentor. You’ll first learn about the tools, equipment and support software in our level 1 Fablab.  These tools include laser engravers, 3D printers, Cricut vinyl cutters and other easy to use tools.  After learning and making with our equipment, you’ll be asked to assist as a guide or mentor for youth and adult groups using our space for educational events. Volunteer mentors will also have access to the level 1 space and equipment for personal use during normal hours of operation when events are not taking place.

All tours at Terrace Hill are by reservation only and are led by Docents. Tours are offered March through December at 10:30 am and 12:00 pm, Tuesdays through Saturdays. Docents work with adults and children. In addition to Terrace Hill's regular tour schedule, Docents are occasionally needed to staff special events during evenings and weekends. Docents should enjoy working with people of all ages, have good public speaking skills and have a passion for learning and sharing the history of Terrace Hill.

AFIL gets donations on almost a daily basis. With so much coming in, we do not always get through it all each week. This is where you come in.

We need help sorting through donated clothing, bedding, and other smaller items.

This includes removing any items with stains, wiping down and test kitchen items, folding shirts, jeans, shorts, and sweat pants. After these items are folded, we need to know what size they are and have them put on the correct shelves.

The Iowa Wild hockey team has invited Adaptive Sports Iowa to be the recipients of the "Split the Pot" raffle that takes place at all home games throughout the 2023-24 season. The volunteers will assist in selling raffle tickets throughout the games up until the end of the second intermission. At that point, a drawing will take place and the proceeds raised during the game will be split between the winning ticket and Adaptive Sports Iowa. This is a tremendous fundraising opportunity for our organization that will have profound effects on our ability to serve our mission. 

The system in place for the volunteers is extremely user-friendly. Each volunteer will have a wireless device that will print the ticket as well as update a real-time amount ticker on the scoreboard.

Are you passionate about working with Survivors of abuse? Attend this required training in order to volunteer in Survivor Services crisis response to Survivors of abuse. 

This Iowa based training allows you to serve only  for Muscatine, Clinton and the St. Ambrose Campus Response SAAT. 20 hours of training are online and 16 hour are virtual via Zoom to total 36 hours. 

The training will be offered again in February of 2024.

There is no cost for this training if you are volunteering at Family Resources. A volunteer application, background check, and a minimum of volunteering is required.

As a JUMP mentor, you can be the listening ear and positive role model for a Johnston student. Food Bank of Iowa's Ottumwa branch needs a volunteer who's willing to launder cloth gloves used by our volunteer crews. These cotton gloves are collected after each shift and add up to a washer load every month or two. Drivers will pick up adult education students from various locations in Waterloo to attend cultural integration and English learning classes. Our van is available, and our interpreter will ride along a predetermined route. There is free time in between classes, as drivers could participate in engaging the community or have the freedom to return to the office when classes end.  

Through YPN's prenatal and parenting groups, community members can donate to our We Care Shop to help provide necessities for our families. Some of the donated items may include baby clothing, baby furniture, and personal care products. These donated items are then purchased with points that the participants earn, as part of making healthy choices. 

We are looking for a friendly volunteer to help in our WeCare Shop. The WeCare Shop is a retail space for our YPN participants to purchase clothes, diapers, wipes, books, strollers, etc. This volunteer opportunity would entail assisting participants with their shopping, doing laundry, restocking shelves, helping keep the store organized and other miscellaneous jobs that may come up. Times would be on Tuesdays from 11am-1pm and/or Wednesdays from 1-3:30pm as a weekly commitment.

The Eastern Iowa Diaper Bank is a collaboration between YPN and Eastern Iowa Health Center (EIHC). Diapers are a basic need for all babies. Unfortunately, 1 in 3 American families struggle to afford diapers to keep their baby clean, dry and healthy. At the diaper bank in our We Care Shop you will provide customer service at the front desk, assist YPN participants with their diaper needs and restock diapers. Volunteers needed every Monday from 1PM to 5:30PM and/or every Thursday from 9am to 12pm. Time commitment at least 6 months.

Each week the Food Bank of Iowa receives food donations that need to be sorted and organized before being distributed to 700 partner agencies. Volunteers can help get the food to our agencies and the Iowans that need it most by participating in this process! Examples of projects include sorting bulk bins of boxed pasta into boxes for inventory, checking quality and dates on food drive items and categorizing them, packing boxes of food or bags of fresh produce, and more!

Processing food donations makes it possible to put food that can feed our neighbors in their cupboards and keep it out of landfills. It's a double win!

Professional duties tailored to intern's interests. 

Interns will, utilizing training the Lantern Center provides, & sessions where they can "shadow" (watch) current tutoring pairs to learn tutoring strategies, will eventually be asked to serve in areas they are comfortable doing, and which they have the skills to complete, serving in roles such as:

Ongoing tutors needed. Two-hour sessions, one time a week. Tutors will be paired with a single student with whom they will work on English and potentially U.S. citizenship test preparation. 

Tutors will be trained at the Lantern Center; prior education experience is not required. 

Sessions will take place within Lantern Center operating hours: 10-3 M/W/F and 1-7 T/Th. Specific time slots will be decided based on the mutual availability of student and tutor.

The Dream Team uses the power of a bicycle to help youth develop a positive approach to life's challenges. We serve 50 youth who have been referred to our team through a professional - therapist, counselor, JCO, etc. 

Our mentors are committed to helping youth riders by offering guidance, providing assistance, and sharing life experiences. Volunteers are dynamic role models who are dedicated to helping our youth riders and play a crucial role in empowering teens to become healthy and confident adults. Several volunteer opportunities are available, each with their own set of responsibilities and time commitments. Our season runs from March - July with training on Monday, Thursday evenings from 5 pm-8:30 pm and on Saturdays from 8 am to 1 pm. Mentors are asked to attend 50% of the training rides to develop relationships with the youth:

Riding Mentor: Adult riding mentors are expected to attend at least 50% of all indoor and outdoor training practices and at least one campout. Riding mentors are also encouraged to participate in RAGBRAI, if possible. Successful mentors work with the youth riders to help them complete the program and grow as young adults.

In-Season Support Mentor: Adult in-season support mentors assist with rest stops during outdoor training and campouts. While support volunteers might not be riding next to youth riders on the road, they are still asked to serve as positive role models and mentors.

Truck driver Mentor: Assist Dream Team with driving a Ryder truck to campouts and during the week of RAGBRAI. Critical role in supporting the team and keeping the youth engaged while at camp.

Care Initiatives Hospice volunteers undergo truly life-changing experiences when they help a patient and their family through a deeply personal and difficult time. The Iowa SILC is seeking new members 18 and over to fill vacancies for terms beginning July 1, 2024.  The Council seeks to maintain diversity of representation including disability, age, ethnicity, and life experiences.  All appointments to the Council will be appointed by the Governor.  

What is the Iowa SILC?

The Iowa SILC is a federally mandated council that works closely with its partners to develop a Statewide Plan for Independent Living (SPIL).  The SPIL (or state plan) serves as a guide that includes the activities planned by the state to achieve its independent living objectives.

What is the time commitment?

Full-Council meetings are held four times a year, with three virtual meetings and one hybrid meeting. The hybrid meeting occurs during our annual board training retreat in October.  Meetings last approximately 5 hours each and are typically held on the third Thursday of the month from 10:30 AM - 4:00 PM.  They are also expected to participate in one SILC committee. Total time commitment is around 50 hours a year.

These blankets will be given out during Street Outreach, where we go to camps and bring supplies to those in need, as well as to youth who are moving into our facilities, many without any possessions of their own. Help keep our youth warm and feeling loved!

The Iowa Insurance Division and other state agencies are here to help you.

Help others become Fraud Fighters by becoming a volunteer with the Iowa Insurance Division. You would provide educational presentations within your community. 

Purpose:

LSI's Senior Immigrant and Refugee Program serves people over the age of 60 working towards their citizenship with extra support to foster community connections, improve quality of life, and work towards the goal of US citizenship. Volunteers lead and support in classes focused on English and Citizenship to support participants towards those goals. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, participants meet at the Polk County Central Senior Center for supplemental activities like art, tai chi, and tutoring to supplement Monday/Wednesday class offerings and support socialization.

Key responsibilities

Adjust plans, techniques, and/or approaches to meet the learning styles of the students and follow the instruction of the ESL Activities Specialist with the ultimate goal of helping students become independent learners

We are looking for one to two volunteers for Tuesday and Thursday food distribution from 12:30/12:45-2:00/2:15pm

The shift consists of stocking foods, helping clients pick out and receive donated food items, and light cleaning.

The food shelf takes place Monday through Friday 1pm to 2pm.

Schedule based on your availability.

Amanda the Panda is looking for volunteers to help maintain our outdoor space. 

Help with mowing the lawn, weeding, trimming hedges, and other yard task that you are able to complete. Tools would be provided to complete the task.

Provide as much or as little time as you would. You can provide 1-2 hours a week, 1-2 hours every other week, 1-2 hours a month, or even provide this service once.

Help represent EveryStep in the community by being our mascot, Amanda, at schools and other functions!

Volunteer will dress up in our Amanda the Panda costume and provide support for attendees at events. The volunteer should be able to respond appropriately at events (being quiet when necessary, or excited and waving at parades), represent the personality of Amanda, and the demeanor of the organization in public.

Volunteers should be friendly, comfortable around children and grieving families, and comfortable working indoors or outdoors in a costume covering head to feet.

Training on the costume is provided. Volunteer will need to pass a background check as well.

Provide a meal to share with our Campus residents. Serve the meal and enjoy the meal with them. Our kids are 10-18 years old. Groups can be a variety of sizes, from 20- 80 teens and staff. These are special treats and can be provided a variety of ways. Catered meals are always welcomed. Special Family or cultural meals are encouraged. We try to do one each month during the week. 

We are seeking compassionate volunteers to provide support to grieving youth as School Support Group Facilitators.

Amanda the Panda is looking for volunteers to help out in Childcare during our Braving Grief Support Groups.

The Childcare Helper role offers the opportunity to connect, supervise, and provide childcare in our play area or outside in our courtyard while their caregivers are in group. Kiddos are under the age of 5 and toys and activities are provided. 

Groups are held in 6-week sessions on Monday evenings, and volunteers could choose to help out with 1 or multiple weeks. Dinner is also provided each week. 

Using our web-based app, we engage volunteers to transfer fresh food surpluses from local businesses to social service agencies serving the food insecure. We call this transfer a "food rescue" and we have ongoing daily food rescue opportunities for volunteers to claim. We require all volunteers to download our web-based app and claim a food rescue that best fits their schedule. 

Amanda the Panda seeks Group Facilitators to help fulfill its mission of providing hope and healing to individuals and families who have experienced the death of a loved one. With the goal of promoting peer support and connectivity, our Braving Grief support groups work to recognize how grief affects our minds and our bodies. Our Braving Grief series includes specific groups like Traumatic Loss,  Little Footprints: Perinatal and Infant Loss, and Youth groups. Each activity helps participants identify and accept grief emotions like anger and guilt, learn healthy coping skills, and create rituals to honor loved ones who have died. 

Group Facilitator volunteers are required to pass our Virtual Facilitator Training prior to volunteering.
