Volunteer: Meals on Wheels East Central Iowa Drivers (Johnson CO)

You can make a difference in the life of a homebound senior in your community! Delivering “more than just a meal,” your visit will provide healthy nutrition, a safety check, a friendly smile, and the support for these individuals to remain in their homes.

Drivers must have a current driver’s license, be able to drive their own vehicle, and must provide proof of auto insurance. Volunteers must also complete a background check prior to delivering meals. Youth are welcome to accompany an adult driver on deliveries!

Please contact jocovolunteers@horizonsfamily.org or call 319-375-3161 if you are interested!

Volunteer: Volunteer Online as a Conversation Partner

Ready to change a life from the comfort of home?

Join ENGin as a conversation partner and be matched with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one-on-one English conversations. In just one hour a week, you can help someone build confidence, break the language barrier, and feel supported, all while discovering a new culture and making a genuine human connection.

We’ll pair you up with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one hour videochats at times that are convenient for you. During your conversations, you’ll facilitate English practice for your partner, learn about each other’s cultures, and offer an empathetic, authentic space for connection.

Our only requirements for volunteers are English fluency, a strong internet connection, and the ability to commit to one hour a week for a minimum of 12 weeks.

No prior tutoring experience or knowledge of Ukrainian language is needed to volunteer with ENGin. We offer ample training resources, session materials, and total flexibility to customize your sessions to fit your/your partner’s goals and preferences. Our friendly team is available to support you throughout your time with us.

Since our launch in 2020, ENGin has matched over 30,000 volunteers with Ukrainians for authentic English-language connection across borders, and we continue to grow every day. 99% of our learners report feeling they were able to break the language barrier as a participant in our program, and 79% of our participants form lasting friendships. We're incredibly proud of these results, and we can't wait to welcome you into this global community of volunteers making them possible.

Here's what three ENGin volunteers say about their experience.

"I made a friend in Ukraine and we are teaching each other about our culture, our language, and our humor. We're even trading dad jokes! Both of us look forward to our chats and have a hard time wrapping it up."

“Fantastic organization doing great work. So happy to be a small part of it.  My partner and I have worked together for two years and have become good friends! Her English has become better, and I have become more knowledgeable about Ukraine!”

"This program has been, I think, life-changing for both of us. I really consider her more like my daughter right now. That's how close we have become!"

Volunteer: Veteran Volunteers Wanted

Hospice Volunteers perform many important duties. Whether providing companionship to a patient, bereavement support, administrative/office work or Veteran-to-Veteran — volunteers play a vital role that enables Heartland Hospice to meet the needs of our patients, their families and the community.

Our volunteers are essential to providing the level of care and support that patients and their families expect from hospice care helping to make Heartland Hospice one of the leading hospice providers in the region.

Volunteers lend an ear to the patient when they express themselves. Oftentimes their presence alone brings comfort and support. Hospice volunteers also enjoy spending time with the patient, and participating in some of their favorite pastimes, like playing chess, cards, or watching TV.

Whether you volunteer in one of our local offices or provide companionship to our patients, you'll be part of a valuable team that helps families navigate a difficult time. We are also looking for pet therapy owners who can share their pets with our patients.

For more information about our volunteer opportunities, please contact Heartland Hospice at (563) 359-3540, and ask for Scott the volunteer coordinator.

Volunteer: ♻️ Lenten Project: Cans for a Cause

This Lenten season, TIM’s CLUBe is launching a simple project with meaningful impact. We’re asking our residents to collect and donate their redeemable cans and bottles throughout the season. It’s a small, consistent way to practice discipline, work together, and give back.

We’re also inviting our community to join us. As you collect your redeemable cans and bottles during Lent, consider setting them aside for TIM’s CLUBe.

At the end of the season, we’ll schedule pickups to collect donations. If you’d like to participate, email us at timsclubedsm@gmail.com to let us know you’re joining in, and we’ll reach out after Easter to coordinate a pickup time. We are also looking for donations during this Lenten season.

Small acts, done together, can make a big difference.

Volunteer: Tech2Connect Mentoring Opportunity

What is mentorship?

Mentorship is a supportive relationship between an experienced or more knowledgeable individual who offers guidance and support to a less experienced or less knowledgeable individual.

Benefits of mentorship

As a Mentee:

Gain practical advice, encouragement, and support Learn from the experiences of others Increase your social confidence Become more empowered to make decisions Develop your communication and personal skills Develop strategies for dealing with personal and social issues Identify goals and establish a sense of direction Gain valuable insight into the next stage of reentry

As a Mentor:

Improve communication and personal skills Develop leadership and management qualities Reinforce knowledge Increase your confidence and motivation Engage in a volunteering opportunity Gain recognition for your skills and experience Benefit from a sense of fulfillment and personal growth

Why is mentorship part of the program?

Mentoring, at its core, guarantees individuals that there is someone who cares about them, assures them they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges, and makes them feel like they matter. Ultimately, mentoring connects an individual to personal growth and development, as well as social and economic opportunity.

Expectations

The mentorship experience starts with virtual meetings while the mentee is incarcerated.  Once the mentee releases to the community, the Circle of Support (2-4 volunteers) will decide if they want to continue meeting virtually or switch to in-person meetings.  This process will be supported by Seventh District - Iowa Department of Corrections staff to help navigate the transition. Mentors may decide to continue the mentorship relationship with more than one mentee but no more two mentees at one time.

As a mentor, you will be assisting participants in creating a “positive philosophy towards life.” You must help your mentees broaden their horizons. Frequently, what your mentees know of life comes only from past experiences in the communities where they grew up. The influences of peer groups make your commitment and caring essential.

Be a stable and supportive friend Show interest in the mentee’s progress Be a role model Invite joint decision-making Encourage new, enjoyable activities, and opportunities Provide constructive feedback Provide positive reinforcement for good behavior Believe in yourself

What is the Circle of Support?

“Circles” are small groups that provide support to Mentees. Mentees will be surrounded by a group of individuals that have volunteered to support them and hold each accountable to their goals.

Utilizes various volunteers - 2-4 per circle with 1 mentee No set curriculum followed.

How does Circle Mentoring Work?

Each circle will identify a coordinator who will be the circle “lead”.  Each circle will identify potential conversation topics; what is comfortable to talk about, and what is not comfortable to talk about.  After discussion ends, the circle will plan their next session. Sessions should occur once a week for the majority of the mentorship program. Due to no followed curriculum, the sessions end when the circle/mentee determine they have reached their expectation of the mentorship program.  Once the decision to end mentorship has been made, the circle coordinator will inform the Seventh District - Iowa Department of Corrections.

Mentor Expectations

Every mentor is expected to abide by the following policies:

Mentors are expected to dedicate 4 hours a month, or 1 hour a week to support the mentee.   Mentors are expected to participate in mentorship training (boundaries, confidentiality, implicit bias, etc.). Seventh District - Iowa Department of Corrections staff will follow up with mentors at least once a month (via phone, email, or in-person) about their interactions with the mentee.   Keep the communication with his/her mentee confidential. Confidentiality is crucial to building trust with the mentee.  Exhibit behavior that is respectful and not make any comments that can be construed as racist, sexist, or bigoted.  Do not condone, promote, or engage in any illegal activities with the mentees.  Do not engage in gift-giving or loaning money to the mentees. Although the urge may be great to help through monetary means, the mentor should keep the relationship on a professional level. If you feel that the mentee is in dire need of something, please speak with the assigned Seventh District - Iowa Department of Corrections staff for assistance. Do not engage in intimate relations with the mentees. Although the relationships may become close, the mentor should remember that their role is of a mentor.

Mentor Code of Ethics

The Mentor Code of Ethics states that you will:

Uphold commitments to the organization and its participants.  Believe that every person, regardless of previous circumstances, has the potential to achieve excellence.  Believe that every person is a unique and special individual possessing qualities that contribute to the community.   Respect the feelings and rights of the person and treat all matters in a confidential manner - even the most obvious.   Remain aware that your goal must be to encourage and support the person in a responsible manner so that he/she will be independent of his/her need for service.  Recognize the value of caring, but refrain from an intense relationship that will interfere with your effectiveness.  Recognize that communication is both valuable and an integral part of your obligations as a mentor.  Know your limitations and ask for help.  Be cautious about personal relationships outside the helping relationship.  Maintain high standards for yourself and encourage the participants whom you assist in striving for success.

Volunteer: Veterans serving Veterans- Hospice volunteer opportunities

Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteer Opportunity
Serve Those Who Served
At WesleyLife Hospice, we believe that those who have worn the uniform share a bond unlike any other. Our Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteers honor that connection by offering presence, understanding, and support to hospice clients who are fellow veterans.
Why Veteran Volunteers Are So Important
Veterans often feel most comfortable sharing their stories, memories, and experiences—especially those from their time in service—with someone who has walked a similar path. Your presence can bring peace, validation, and deep connection during a profoundly meaningful chapter of life.
Support as a Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteer
As a veteran volunteer, you will have the opportunity to:
Companionship & Conversation
Spend time talking, reminiscing, or simply sitting together in quiet companionship with hospice clients who served their country.
Respite for Caregivers
Offer short periods of relief for family caregivers so they can rest, run errands, or take a needed break—knowing their loved one is with someone who understands military life.
Veteran Pinning Ceremonies
Play a key role in our We Honor Veterans program by participating in or assisting with our veteran pinning ceremonies. These ceremonies recognize and honor a veteran’s service, creating a moment of gratitude and dignity for the veteran and their family.
Many volunteers consider these ceremonies one of the most profoundly moving parts of their service.
About Our We Honor Veterans Program
WesleyLife Hospice is proud to participate in We Honor Veterans, a national initiative that focuses on respectful inquiry, compassionate listening, and veteran-centered care.
As part of this program, our veteran volunteers help ensure that every hospice veteran receives:

The honor and recognition they deserve
Opportunities to share their military journey
Specialized emotional support
A meaningful, personalized veteran pinning ceremony
Your shared military background enhances this work in a way no one else can.
Flexible Scheduling That Fits Your Life
Whether you’re available once a month or weekly, we’ll work with your schedule. Even small amounts of time can have a lasting impact.
Where We Serve
WesleyLife Hospice provides care in Pella and surrounding communities, including Boone, Dallas, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Polk, Poweshiek, Story, and Warren counties. Many clients are located at the Cottages in Pella, but we meet veterans wherever they call home.
Hear from Lindsey, a WesleyLife Volunteer
"Being a volunteer for WesleyLife Hospice means the world to me. I’ve been through hospice with family members, and now I can make the experience better for others. The best part is being there for someone who might not have anyone and letting them know they’re not alone."
Ready to Serve Your Fellow Veterans?
Your military experience can bring comfort, companionship, and honor to veterans in their final chapter of life.

Volunteer: Data Entry Volunteers

We are looking for detail-oriented volunteers to help our team keep important records up to date. Accurate data is essential to our work — it helps us track the generosity of our in-kind donors, recognize community support, and report on volunteer impact across our programs. As a Data Entry Volunteer, you will play a quiet but vital role in making sure that information is organized, current, and accessible to staff.

What You'll Do

Enter in-kind donor information into our donor tracking spreadsheet Input donor records into our donor database, keeping profiles accurate and complete Log volunteer hours into our volunteer management database Flag any discrepancies or questions for staff review Maintain confidentiality of all donor and volunteer information

What We're Looking For

You don't need to be a data expert — just someone who is comfortable with computers and takes care with details. Specifically, we're looking for volunteers who have:

Basic comfort using a computer and common software programs Ability to type and enter information into Microsoft Word documents Familiarity with Microsoft Excel — navigating and entering data into existing spreadsheets (no need to create a new one) A careful, patient approach to data entry Reliability and follow-throughSuggested shifts might be 9am - 11am, but any 2-3 hour window Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm would work.

Training on our specific systems will be provided — no prior database experience required.

Why It Matters

When donor and volunteer data is accurate and up to date, our team can focus more time on the families we serve. Your work directly supports our ability to acknowledge community generosity, track program capacity, and make the case for continued support. It's behind-the-scenes work with very real front-line impact.

Ready to Help?

Contact Missy Reams at by email at missy@familiesforward.org or by phone at 515-989-8404.

Volunteer: Mentoring Elementary Students

The purpose of our mentoring program is to increase student belonging. Meeting with community mentors helps students feel connected and empowered.

We match mentors to elementary students in kindergarten through sixth grade. As a mentor, you would meet with one assigned student once each week at school during the day for 30-45 minutes. Most often, this occurs during lunch/recess time (between 11:00-1:00). Mentors chat with students while they eat lunch and then go to a different area of the school to play board games. Mentors are expected to connect with the students personably and get to know the kids. This is not a time for academic tutoring, but rather a time for students to connect with caring, responsible adults. Games and materials will be provided. We expect mentors to dress appropriately for a school setting, to be punctual, and to communicate with us if they will be gone.

We welcome community volunteers of all ages and life stages. There are no specific knowledge or skill requirements. The school district requires all mentors to complete a district volunteer form before beginning. This includes a background check.

Volunteer: Spring Into Action

Join us in restoring Iowa’s woodland habitats and supporting the growth of native trees, grasses, and wildflowers!

Together with the Blank Park Zoo and Polk County Conservation, volunteers will help remove invasive plant species that threaten the health and diversity of our native woodlands. Invasive plants put significant pressure on our ecosystems, affecting both native plants and wildlife. By removing these species, you’ll help create space for Iowa plants and animals to thrive. As an added benefit, some of the plants removed, like honeysuckle, become a special treat for animals cared for at the Zoo.

This hands-on volunteer opportunity offers a fun and meaningful service-learning experience. You will learn how to identify native and invasive plant species, practice effective invasive removal techniques, and discover how your efforts directly support the health of local ecosystems at Fort Des Moines Park. Come lend a hand, learn something new, and be part of restoring the natural beauty of Iowa’s woodlands.

Volunteer: Riders Club: On Call from Home

"Riders Club answering service.  Are you calling about a ride which has already been scheduled?"

Riders Club is the car someone no longer drives.

Riders and drivers can be active 24/7 which means there are times they cannot find each other.  Since the office is only open for scheduling from 9 am to 3 pm, Monday through Friday, we need someone to answer the phone outside office hours and on Holidays. You choose when you can answer phone calls.

Work from any location that has a phone to help drivers, riders and the office!  Our phone system allows us to forward phones to any number.  We can even adjust the call destination remotely!

Our Ride Management System (RCA RMS) gives you all the information to help others get back on track.

You will need web access and a computer.  Printing out the master manifest allows you to be mobile without using the internet on your mobile phone.  A common evening involves 0 to 5 phone calls.

Helpful skills include:

phone communication, comfort with simple computer usage, and some knowledge of local roads.

Help from home!  and make a huge difference in other people's lives.

Volunteer: Food Rescue Volunteer – Bidwell Pantry

Every pound of food you rescue is a meal for a family in need.

When grocery stores have surplus food, you help make sure it never goes to waste — and never goes far. As a Food Rescue Volunteer, you'll pick up donations from local retailers and bring them directly to the Bidwell Pantry, where families in our community are counting on what you carry through the door.

This is a great fit for someone who wants a consistent, active role with a tangible impact they can see every single week.

What you'll do: Meet at the Bidwell Pantry, then head out with a staff member or fellow volunteer to nearby grocery stores and retailers. You'll help load donated food into the vehicle, return to the pantry to unload and properly store items, and keep a quick record of what was collected. You're back at the pantry and done by 10:00 AM — a great way to make a real difference before your day gets started.

When we need you: Fridays, 8:00–10:00 AM

Choose one day per week that works consistently with your schedule. Regular volunteers are especially valuable — stores get to know you, and the relationships you build make the work even smoother over time.

What you bring:

Age 18 or older Ability to lift and carry food items A commitment to showing up on your chosen day — families plan their week around what we bring in

Why it matters: The Bidwell Pantry serves around 130 families every single day who are experiencing food insecurity in Des Moines. Food rescue pickups are one of the most direct ways volunteers keep the shelves stocked and the pantry running. You're not just helping out — you're part of the supply chain that makes it work.

Questions: Contact Missy Reams at missy@familiesforward.org or by phone at 515-989-8404 or by text at 515-346-8895.

About volunteering: A volunteer orientation is provided when you first arrive to help, including an overview about poverty in the Des Moines metro. We provide a unique cultural and economically diverse volunteer experience.

Information for First-time Volunteers: Click here for information about parking, how to check in when you arrive, and much more.

About Families Forward: Families Forward (previously Bidwell Riverside Center and Hawthorn Hill) has four main programs: Bidwell Pantry, Child Development Center, New Directions Shelter (emergency housing), and The Home Connection (long-term housing). For over 100 years, our mission has been to provide compassionate, life-changing assistance to families and their path to self-sufficiency.

Volunteer: Guardians for Mid-Step Services Memeber

Volunteers Needed to Serve as Guardians for Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Mid-Step Services, Inc. is a Not For Profit dedicated to providing residential, vocational, educational, and recreational services to people with intellectual disabilities to help them reach their highest potential.  We are seeking volunteers that would be willing to serve as Guardians for some of the individuals we serve.  A Guardian is a court appointed substitute decision maker for a protected person: individuals who are incapable of making decisions about issues like medical care, residential placement, and other important personal matters.  Family members, friends, or other supporting individuals typically serve in this role; however, some of the individuals we serve do not have friends or family that are willing or capable of assisting them as their Guardian.  We’re looking for caring community members to help.

As a Guardian, a volunteer would be expected to get to know the protected person, understand their needs or problems, and seek information relevant to making informed decisions on their behalf.  Once a year, the Guardian is required to provide the Court with a status report on their protected person.  Serving as a protected person’s Guardian does not impose financial responsibility for the protected person or make the Guardian liable for the actions of the protected person.

All protected persons needing Guardians are currently residing with and receiving services from Mid-Step Services.  MSS staff are available to assist with questions and guidance for volunteers both before and after appointment as a Guardian.

For more information on volunteering to be a Guardian or to be matched with an individual needing decision-making assistance, please visit: https://www.midstepservices.com/volunteer-today-2/.
