Volunteer: Community Inclusion Club Peer MentorsCommunity Inclusion Club (CIC) is a non-profit that was created to provide/ facilitate socially inclusive opportunities for adults with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) living in and around the Iowa City community. We do this by hosting events once a month at various locations where people with and without ID meet, mingle and get to know one another. We realize that people with ID often lack opportunities to interact with their non-disabled peers in the community, and this club was founded to change all that. If you are interested in being a part of CIC, please go to our website (see below)and register. https://communityinclusionclub.com/#mission We do background checks on all members, and once you have been vetted you will be added to our mailing list. Volunteer: Run a Hygiene Drive for Des Moines Public SchoolsHygiene poverty can reduce student attendance
Hygiene Drive Guide Every child deserves access to hygiene supplies. Hygiene poverty is defined as an inability to afford everyday hygiene products, such as shampoo, toilet paper, grooming products, dish soap, etc. While the root of hygiene poverty is the lack of access to basic toiletries, its effects are made much worse by “hygiene shaming”. If the shame a child feels because they can’t afford to be clean is not bad enough, the shame and distress piled on top by insensitive peers can have a terrible impact, not just on their ability to learn but on their entire mental wellbeing. Hardships can include: Inability to take a shower with shampoo, conditioner, and soap Using an old toothbrush or not having toothpaste Cleaning clothes less often (or with water only) due to lack of laundry detergent Fear of leaving home during your period because your makeshift solutions leak and could embarrass youThere is a never-ending need for these supplies, so set a goal that seems reasonable for your team. Shampoo Conditioner Soap Toothbrushes Toothpaste Deodorant Laundry detergent Hair products Feminine hygiene products Floss Face wash/acne cream

It is as easy as showing your new Little Brother or Sister how to play a favorite computer game, bake an apple pie or reading the funnies together. Volunteer: Divorce Workshop FacilitatorThe Iowa Center for Children’s Justice gives children a voice in divorce and custody conflicts by providing focused legal representation and services for kids. We strive to create stability for children of divorce, lessen the effect of family conflict on children, connect families to support systems and needed resources, and make children’s voices heard. We do this by offering education workshops to school-age children of divorcing parents to help kids understand and cope with their parents’ separation and divorce. The workshops give children a confidential place to talk about their feelings. The two-hour workshops are interactive using artwork, games, videos, discussions, and role play to get children comfortable and engaged in conversation. The workshops are two hours on Tuesday evenings once a month. Children are grouped by age; 6-9, 10-12, and 13-16 and placed into age appropriate settings. This is a one-time, court ordered class. Volunteer: Make a Difference- Mentor a student today! The positive impact of an adult role model on student success is powerful – and this impact extends far beyond a student’s teachers and other school staff. Mentors from across our community build life-changing relationships with students to support their success in and out school.
What is the Student Mentoring Program? Student mentoring in the Dubuque Community School District is defined as a one-to-one relationship between a youth and an adult that occurs over a prolonged period of time. A mentor provides consistent support, guidance, and concrete help to a student who is in need of a positive role model. Students involved in the mentoring program may be going through a difficult and/or challenging situation, a period of life in which they need extra support, or they may simply need to have another significant adult present in their life. The goal of student mentoring is to help students involved in the mentoring program to gain the skills and confidence to be responsible for their own futures. To achieve this goal, mentors commit to mentoring a student: for a half hour, each week for the entire 9-month school year during school hours on school groundsAgency: Dubuque Community Schools Student Mentoring program The positive impact of an adult role model on student success is powerful – and this impact extends far beyond a student’s teachers and other school staff.
