The Dream Team uses the power of a bicycle to help youth develop a positive approach to life's challenges. We serve 50 youth who have been referred to our team through a professional - therapist, counselor, JCO, etc. 

Our mentors are committed to helping youth riders by offering guidance, providing assistance, and sharing life experiences. Volunteers are dynamic role models who are dedicated to helping our youth riders and play a crucial role in empowering teens to become healthy and confident adults. Several volunteer opportunities are available, each with their own set of responsibilities and time commitments. Our season runs from March - July with training on Monday, Thursday evenings from 5 pm-8:30 pm and on Saturdays from 8 am to 1 pm. Mentors are asked to attend 50% of the training rides to develop relationships with the youth:

Riding Mentor: Adult riding mentors are expected to attend at least 50% of all indoor and outdoor training practices and at least one campout. Riding mentors are also encouraged to participate in RAGBRAI, if possible. Successful mentors work with the youth riders to help them complete the program and grow as young adults.

In-Season Support Mentor: Adult in-season support mentors assist with rest stops during outdoor training and campouts. While support volunteers might not be riding next to youth riders on the road, they are still asked to serve as positive role models and mentors.

Truck driver Mentor: Assist Dream Team with driving a Ryder truck to campouts and during the week of RAGBRAI. Critical role in supporting the team and keeping the youth engaged while at camp.

Caring for Iowans in their final stages of life is a difficult task, but it is also meaningful beyond words. Care Initiatives Hospice volunteers undergo truly life-changing experiences when they help a patient and their family through a deeply personal and difficult time. We could not provide the important care that we do without the dedication and support of our compassionate volunteers. We have short-term and long-term opportunities available and are able to work around your schedule. Friendly visiting may include holding a hand, reading to patients, listening to a story, listening to music, playing games, or just sitting with a patient. We serve patients in facilities and in their own homes. We follow CDC guidelines and make sure our volunteers are aware of any positive COVID-19 cases.

We are looking for community members who are able to commit 8 hours a month to our store located in the Ped Mall in downtown Iowa City. Volunteers will help greet customers, share product and artist information, ring people up and help us keep the store looking fresh and fully stocked. Some duties involve using the cash register, unpacking product, checking tags, cleaning, and sharing product knowledge with shoppers.

Meals on Wheels helps older adults and persons with disabilities in Eastern Iowa meet their daily nutritional needs by delivering hot, fresh, ready-to-eat meals in addition to frozen meals and breakfast bags.

The Iowa SILC is seeking new members 18 and over to fill vacancies for terms beginning July 1, 2024.  The Council seeks to maintain diversity of representation including disability, age, ethnicity, and life experiences.  All appointments to the Council will be appointed by the Governor.  

What is the Iowa SILC?

The Iowa SILC is a federally mandated council that works closely with its partners to develop a Statewide Plan for Independent Living (SPIL).  The SPIL (or state plan) serves as a guide that includes the activities planned by the state to achieve its independent living objectives.

What is the time commitment?

Full-Council meetings are held four times a year, with three virtual meetings and one hybrid meeting. The hybrid meeting occurs during our annual board training retreat in October.  Meetings last approximately 5 hours each and are typically held on the third Thursday of the month from 10:30 AM - 4:00 PM.  They are also expected to participate in one SILC committee. Total time commitment is around 50 hours a year.

Help make tie blankets for the youth we serve! These blankets will be given out during Street Outreach, where we go to camps and bring supplies to those in need, as well as to youth who are moving into our facilities, many without any possessions of their own. Help keep our youth warm and feeling loved!

Purpose:

LSI's Senior Immigrant and Refugee Program serves people over the age of 60 working towards their citizenship with extra support to foster community connections, improve quality of life, and work towards the goal of US citizenship. Volunteers lead and support in classes focused on English and Citizenship to support participants towards those goals. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, participants meet at the Polk County Central Senior Center for supplemental activities like art, tai chi, and tutoring to supplement Monday/Wednesday class offerings and support socialization.

Adjust plans, techniques, and/or approaches to meet the learning styles of the students and follow the instruction of the ESL Activities Specialist with the ultimate goal of helping students become independent learners

Using our web-based app, we engage volunteers to transfer fresh food surpluses from local businesses to social service agencies serving the food insecure. We call this transfer a "food rescue" and we have ongoing daily food rescue opportunities for volunteers to claim. We require all volunteers to download our web-based app and claim a food rescue that best fits their schedule. 

RSVP coordinates with disabled individuals and seniors to provide medical transportation to needed appointments in Mount Pleasant, Burlington, Iowa City and other areas as needed. Mileage reimbursement is available for volunteers using their personal vehicles or an RSVP car is available for use. 

This is an opportunity to volunteer from the comfort of your own home. Project Nursing Home is a program where generic cards and letters are written to nursing home residents and distributed to local nursing homes. 

RSVP is looking for volunteers to serve as office assistance at The Fellowship Cup and in the RSVP office. These hours would vary. Skills needed are ability to operate telephone system, computer, experience with Google Docs and Microsoft Office is helpful. 

Mustard Seed Community Farm seeks help with fundraising efforts for infrastructure and operating costs.

Looking for fitness and health knowledgeable volunteers to lead and/or assist with the following program. The program is typically held 2-3 times a year and for various ages (toddler, school age, teen, adult) for 10-15 weeks depending on the session. The program is typically held on Saturday mornings but the days and times can be negotiated with the volunteer. We provide the training needed to be successful in leading the program. Most training is completed online. 

GiGiFIT is a fitness and health program written specifically for individuals with Down syndrome. 

Our FREE GiGiFIT programs combine activities with a strong fitness focus and an ultimate goal of success and improved movement designed by a physical therapist. GiGiFIT was created in collaboration with skilled Physical Therapists who work specifically with individuals with Down syndrome. The GiGiFIT programs are designed to address common issues for individuals with Down syndrome including hypotonia, excessive joint laxity, and decreased balance. Every GiGiFIT program is safe, effective, and progressive. GiGiFIT helps participants build strength, endurance, power, joint stability, balance, and movement control. GiGiFIT empowers participants to be more independent and confident in their abilities while improving their overall health and wellness.

Do you want to do something that is satisfying and of great service to your community? Become an Achieving Change Together (ACT) Circle of Support mentor. ACT mentorship circles are small groups (3-6 people) that provide support to one individual using a process that allows respectful discussions of interests, goals and life issues in a safe and guided way. The fun thing about a mentorship circle is that you can volunteer with your friends!

The only qualifications required are that you have a desire to help someone in need and that you are at least 21 years of age. You must be able to dedicate 2-4 hours per month to the circle and not currently be on any level of court supervision.

Safer Foundation’s ACT program was initiated in the fall of 2020 to provide supportive reentry services to individuals, who were previously incarcerated, that are currently residing in the work release center (WRC) and residential correctional facility (RCF) as they transition into the community.

RSVP Volunteers help assist eligible clients with the rent reimbursement claim form and answer any questions they might have. RSVP is listed as the primary contact for Jasper County on the Iowa Department Revenue Website for Rent Reimbursement Assistance. The Rent Reimbursement program allows Iowa residents to file a claim for reimbursement for rent paid during the ear if they meet the set of guidelines. Time commitment: The program generally runs from January- June of each year. Hours vary between 1-5 hours a month. Requirements: Technological savvy, great customer service.

RSVP Volunteers help with adopting a trail, planting seeds, cleaning seeds, working in the bookstore, and more!!! The Refuge teaches Iowans the history of the land and teaches youth to protect the environment. Time commitment: Minimum of 2 hours a week to a maximum of 40 hours a week. RSVP Volunteers work with non-profit organizations and individual community members in various capacities to improve our community. This program provides aid to nonprofits or individuals who can't afford to pay someone to help with certain vital jobs. Time Commitment: Set your own schedule with the organization, max of 10 hours a week. Requirements: Clerical work (as requested) such as record keeping, opening mail, and answering phones.

In a learning and play environment, RSVP Volunteers interact and develop positive relationships with young children while assisting classroom teachers with daily activities as needed. Headstart Volunteering is important to prepare children for kindergarten, learn through play and interaction with others, and give the children a chance to interact one on one with many adults. RSVP Volunteers correspond with Baxter Elementary students via written and mailed letters. Using the Pen Pal Program, this program helps students develop their written language and writing skills. All Communication skills are essential to academics. Time commitment: 1 letter written to 1 student per month September- May "Meet & Greet" in May at Baxter Elementary to meet your pen pal in person. Requirements: One short introduction Biography about yourself. Legiable handwriting for students to read.

Jasper County Ride Volunteers provide rides to and from vital medical appointments to community members who have no other means to get there. This is an important program as there is a lack of affordable transportation, which leaves people without the ability to seek the following care: Medical, Dental, Vision, Counseling, and medication.

Time Commitment: 1-2 rides/ week. You set your own schedule. It can be year-round or just seasonal.

Requirements: A valid driver's license, current proof of insurance, and a vehicle that can safely transport you and the client.

RSVP Volunteers listen to 3 students read out loud to them for 20 minutes each, 60 minutes total, per week. Students from Aurora Heights, Emerson Hough, Berg Middle, Woodrow Wilson, Thomas Jefferson, Newton Christian, and Prarie City Schools participate in this program. This program is important as it helps the students build a reading foundation for their education at a young age.

Impact of assignment: This will allow us to better educate the community of the needs of the Deaf/HoH community.

If you like gardening or the outdoors, or if you have a community group that wants to do some service work, we have a spot for you. We have several fun ways to help feed families, - as gardeners, delivering produce, weeding, harvesting, and helping at the Food Pantry.

Voices for Food operates a large cooperative learning garden, which annually produces over 16,000 pounds of produce donated to food pantries and community agencies serving families needing food assistance. This is a community based project- made up entirely of volunteers just like you! 

Harvesting is usually done in the morning when it is cool, but garden work can be done every day of the week and fit almost any schedule.  Food Pantry days are the first, third, and fourth Thursdays and the second Friday of each month.

This is a family friendly project and service groups, youth groups, family groups are welcome and encouraged  to participate.

MOVING PRODUCE - Volunteers with trucks are also needed to pick up produce and deliver to the pantry roughly 45 minutes prior each of the pantry days.  This  could be one-time a month commitment or multiple days.

We are currently recruiting new CASA volunteers to advocate for kids who have been either abused and/or neglected.

CASAs speak for children who can't speak for themselves, children who have been judged as "children in need of assistance" by the state. You'll learn your role through comprehensive training, and then you'll be assigned your own case. A coach and a CASA coordinator will be there to support you along the way as you advocate in court for your assigned children.CASA volunteers average approximately 10-15 hours per month visiting their assigned child, reading case documents, contacting other case parties and preparing a monthly update for their Coordinator and Coach.  This varies considerably, depending on the number of contacts made, the number of children to visit, travel time, and other factors unique to each case.

Mustard Seed Community Farm is looking for 2-3 volunteers to help with outside planting tasks on Tuesday or Friday afternoons.

We'll prepare the beds for planting (which could entail hauling manure or compost), plant peas, spinach, potatoes, maybe trees, and digging up carrots for you to take home.

There will be a crew of about 7-10 people all working together on this harvest and while we work hard, we also have a lot of fun together. Carpooling is highly recommended and there is usually a carpool coming from Ames every harvest morning. We get to see each other every week, do meaningful work together, be in a beautiful place, and by the end of the season we are quite a team.

Please come to your shift no matter what the forecast (unless it’s a tornado warning! – then wait for the storm to pass) and dress for the weather. SafePlace is looking to grow its team of direct service volunteer advocates in both Woodbury and Plymouth counties. We are looking for individuals who would be comfortable with working directly with our clients, providing advocacy, support and safe options. Must be willing to complete required Victim Advocate training. Training is offered both in-person and online. 

Direct Services include (but not limited to): working with survivors living at the SafePlace shelter, answering our crisis line, cooking dinner, assisting advocates with facilitating support groups, providing transportation to survivors, assisting survivors with filing for protection orders, attending court hearings, responding to hospital calls for survivors who need medical attention, and various other services.

The Student Loan Counselor needs to understand the basic range of potential student loan subjects and how to track down pertinent information. Also needs to understand what applies to a particular client’s situation, synthesizing the information and communicating suggestions and steps in a logical, understandable manner. Counseling hours and days can be flexible, although ideally somewhat consistent.

Waypoint Services is the comprehensive domestic violence victim service provider for Benton, Black Hawk, Buchanan, Delaware, Dubuque, Jones, and Linn Counties and is looking for volunteers to assist individuals experiencing controlling, abusive partners.

Volunteer Victim Advocates assist with answering the 24/7 Resource & Support phone line, supporting victims in criminal and civil court proceedings, and providing emergency advocacy at area hospitals for victims of domestic violence. Additional support options are available, depending on interest and skill level, such as support partner, transportation, and hosting support groups. Ideal candidates are non-judgmental, compassionate, encouraging, and empowering.

Volunteers are required to attend a free, 32-hour training that will be provided by Waypoint. 20 hours are completed online, while 12 hours are completed in-person. Attendance at all sessions is required prior to volunteering. Quarterly training dates are offered.

Overview

Assist consumers in navigating the Social Security System more effectively by assisting with Supplemental Security Income (SSI)  or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) applications and/or appeals.  

Duties

The Administrative Volunteer provides support to office personnel through clerical and administrative functions. An Administrative volunteer may assist with answering telephones, filing, making copies, data entry or helping to create admission packets. An Administrative Volunteer might help with compiling and mailing Bereavement letters, sympathy cards or the planning of the Annual Memorial Service.

The survivors we serve often need transportation, whether that's quick errands around town or longer trips to a different community to get a fresh start on life. We're creating a team of volunteer drivers to serve us as needs arrive. Driving could be done in a CIS vehicle or in your own vehicle. We will compensate for fuel and other expenses if you use your own vehicle.

Volunteers will be screened (including background checks) and go through training that addresses trauma-informed care, confidentiality and other issues. Volunteers must provide their driver's license and proof of insurance.

Help is needed providing occasional child care for emergency shelter clients. Adult survivors often flee traumatic situations with one or more children in tow. This is a simple but vital role as they journey toward stability.

Clients often have job interviews, legal appointments or other needs. Child care needs often arise on short notice, so volunteers will be on standby list and will be called whenever needed. We will try to provide at least 24 hours’ notice.

Shifts are between one and four hours. Child care can be provided in our shelter in Mahaska County or at CIS offices (212 North I Street).

Providers must pass a background check and sign our Confidentiality Agreement.

Our team needs assistance every summer watering the enabling gardens our persons served use to plant flowers and vegetables! Ideally, we are looking for individuals to take a consistent shift one day a week (watering will take approximately an hour). Saturdays and Sundays are highest priority, but help during the week would be welcomed, too. We have all the supplies you need but recommend you bring your own gardening gloves!

We are always looking for assistance with filing, copying, placing marketing materials in folders, and other basic clerical tasks.  This can be scheduled for a set day and time of the week (Monday through Friday between the hours of 8-4:30) or we may have special projects come up that we would specifically call you to complete.  The tasks being completed would be a tremendous assistance to our staff many times being the last part of a project and enable us to take marketing materials ready to go to meetings, conferences, etc. or provide information to our persons served families, etc.

This volunteer would be able to follow simple directions, work independently, and be organized.

Timeline:

   The grant review process will be February-March.

   Scoring meeting in March and allocation will take place in April.

Responsibilities:

   Attend a one-time 90-minute training session.

   Commit to the grant application review process.

The Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) sponsored by Lakes Regional Healthcare is seeking dedicated volunteers to join as counselors. We are in need of volunteers to help support our Drug Donation Repository. We recover unused medicines across the US that go unused in health care facilities and pharmacies. The medicines are inspected by pharmacists and distributed to clinics and pharmacies across the state that care for low income, underinsured and uninsured patients. 

We provide a clean, supportive, and flexible volunteer space and strictly follow all COVID-19 protocols. Scheduling is very flexible based on availability, weather, and donation volume. 

Volunteers are needed to sort incoming donations, organize donated inventories, and assist in the preparation of outgoing orders.

Requirements include:

Purpose/Function: An Impact Committee will seek to understand the needs of the county/affiliate area to ensure alignment between those needs and our grants. The primary function and responsibility of the committee is to invest in nonprofits through the discretionary grant process. The committee will implement best practices in grantmaking, uphold trust-based practices, and reflect CFNEIA’s values in grant decision-making with the goal of maximizing the impact of those grants. The committee will work closely with CFNEIA staff to collaboratively achieve shared goals.

Actions of an Impact Committee for impactful grantmaking:

Membership: The committee shall consist of community representatives from across the affiliate area based upon key characteristics they might bring to the committee and include diverse representation across geographic location, age, gender, race, etc.

Term of Membership: Three years, renewable once for up to six years of continuous service.

Meeting Schedule: An Impact Committee will meet a minimum of three times per year and up to a maximum of eight times per year. In addition to the required meetings, hosting an event that celebrates community grantmaking impacts is highly recommended. Annual meetings will include the following: education meeting focused on grantmaking best practices, trust-based philanthropy, and/or community need assessment; business meeting; and deliberation meeting.

We have a wide variety of trips, ranging from 45 minutes to 3 hours or more. We provide the vehicle and gas card to fill-up after each trip.

From May 1 through October 31 we are looking for individuals to unlock the Behrens-Rapp Station on First Street in Cedars at 8:00am on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The Behrens-Rapp Station is located between the Ice House Museum and the Little Red School. This building provides visitor information from May through October. This is an ideal volunteer opportunity for those living in or near downtown Cedar Falls that enjoy walking or bicycling.

The Cedar Falls Tourism & Visitors Bureau is looking for outgoing, friendly volunteers who like to visit with people to staff the Cedar Falls Visitor Center during the week or staff an information table during an event. Duties include welcoming guests; assisting with directions; and providing information on attractions, restaurants and things to do in the community.

Theater Attendant volunteers provide wayfinding, confirm that films are running correctly, and make sure that theaters are ready to welcome guests. This position will report to the Manager on duty. Responsibilities: -Ensure that the theater space is clean before and after a film plays. Cleaning may include tasks such as vacuuming, sweeping, and replacing the trash. -Have basic knowledge of the history of the Varsity Cinema, membership, and other frequently asked questions. -Direct guests to their seats as they arrive for their film. -Confirm that films are successfully playing. This includes making basic checks on projection, sound, lights, and temperature. -Report inappropriate guest behavior to the manager on duty during the run of the film.

Nevada's brand new farmers market is now taking sign-ups for volunteers. The market takes place downtown on 6th street on Thursday evenings through August 31st. Volunteers will stand near the barricades at the ends of the street to let vendors in and out and answer questions to market goers.

Our promotions committee works to find opportunities to promote our downtown businesses. Sometimes this is through events that bring people to our main street and sometimes this is collaborating with other activities in town to promote visitors to check out our downtown. This committee member could also work with the organization's director to help with social media posts. 

This committee meets one to two times per month, on Tuesday evenings at 6pm. As an event approaches, more meeting times may be necessary. These committee members are also expected to be at the events they organized. 

No experience necessary. No heavy lifting required. We prefer a one year commitment, but hope you will enjoy it and stay longer! The value you will receive is helping business owners promote their businesses, as they cannot do it alone. You will also engage with other volunteers who share a common passion of helping our downtown grow. 

The City of Storm Lake is seeking artists interested in creating sculptures, memorials, statues, structures, murals, street art or other forms of artist expression to improve quality of life in Storm Lake.  The volunteer should include a statement of qualifications addressing their strengths with similar public art projects.

Volunteers who may adopt the planters include businesses, individuals, families, civic groups, churches and other groups.  Sponsors agree to buy, plant, and maintain the adopted planter over a 12 month period.

The Adopt-A-Planter application and agreement shall contain the names of any individuals who would assist the planter sponsor in maintenance and planting activities during the 12 month commitment. The planter sponsor must supply City staff with updated information should changes in contact information or volunteers occur.  The adopter or adopting group is responsible for the safety and well-being of volunteers at all times.

LSI's CSA is a way for Des Moines area eaters to support former refugee farmers starting their small business. Volunteers can help by getting the food organized and ready for pickup.

CSA packing happens on Mondays and Tuesdays throughout the summer. . Volunteers can also help with transporting produce to our pick up locations around the metro.

Volunteers also pack and deliver monthly food boxes year round to former refugee seniors to help alleviate food insecurity. This generally happens the third Monday and Tuesday of each month.

Could you assist Linn County neighbors in finding the resources they need?

The Ecumenical Community Center Foundation (ECCF) and its Helping Hands Ministry (HHM) are seeking volunteer receptionists.  Could you commit to a few weekday hours each week or every other week, perhaps either 10 to 1 or 1 to 4 ? 

ECCF's Helping Hands Ministry (HHM) needs help answering phones filing recently used client files.  People call to request help with rent, utilities, auto gas, and ID replacement.   We also assist with budgeting and guide people to many appropriate community resources.  

Could you assist people with their lifelong learning goals in a small computer lab?

Currently, CompuPlace clients with disabilities attend by appointment Tuesdays through Thursdays between 10 AM and 4 PM.  Most clients have cognitive, intellectual, communication, or developmental disabilities such as autism spectrum, Down syndrome, or traumatic brain injury. Some have dexterity-related disabilities that make it harder to use a computer.

The CompuPlace lab is currently unused on Mondays and Fridays. In order not to waste this resource, and in the spirit of inclusion, we seek to expand our services beyond people with disabilities to people who have been left behind in the age of information, technology, and the internet. In addition to people with disabilities, people with low incomes, seniors, and rural adults are too often on the wrong side of a gaping digital divide. We seek a reliable team of volunteers to staff the lab for drop-in availability to Linn County residents with learning goals.  Can you help?

At CompuPlace, we start wherever the student is. It is a place where abilities are identified and harnessed, where it is safe to guess, where learning is supported, effort is applauded, and success celebrated with gusto. This method is equally appropriate for learners with and without disabilities. 

CompuPlace clients are often working on communication, spelling and reading, math and money, problem solving, professional behavior, and general computer skills.  Some clients attend alone, some with group home house mates, and some in small and large groups.  Many clients play games or surf the web in order to learn the skills they need to improve their lives. 

The CompuPlace way encourages people to direct their own lifelong learning. There is dignity in learning, and there is empowerment in self-directed continuing education. There is so much to know, so much to “Ask Google,” and so much yet to discover, both collectively and individually.

Help citizens in need by using your mechanical skills and restoring power wheelchairs. Training will be provided. No mechanical skills required - just a curiosity and willingness to learn. Your support will provide mobility and independence.

Do you have a desire to help others and like to spend time outside? We are looking for an individual who would be willing to help a client rake a yard and/or mow a lawn in Mason City, Iowa. This can be a one-time thing or it can be ongoing, whatever meets your timeline.

Put your organizational skills to good use by assisting with printing documents and preparing mailings for our organization.  Senior citizens still rely heavily on traditional methods of communication and this is a critical way to get our message out to a wide variety of people who may be interested in our programming. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you might be the person who helped someone find our organization and programming in addition to keeping them informed about what we are offering.

Description:

Communications Assistants are responsible for preparing mailings to be sent out to lists of individuals who have expressed interest in our programming or who may be interested in our programming in the future. This may include copying documents, sorting documents, folding documents, filling envelopes, applying postage, and delivery to a postal station.

Qualifications:

Communication Assistants should possess a moderate level of finger and hand dexterity.

Times Needed:

Communication Assistants have some flexibility as to when they can do their assignment.  The assignment can be done at the LEC during our regular programming times of Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings or, if desired, depending on assignment, may be done from their home.

All volunteers are required to be interviewed prior to volunteering and to attend an orientation to our organization as well as an orientation to their specific volunteer assignment.

Are you someone who enjoys talking to a wide variety of people and doesn’t shy away from talking on the phone? Do you feel equally at home with new technology such as texting? While senior citizens still rely heavily on traditional methods of communication such as phones many are comfortable with texting also. Phone calls and texting are critical ways to get our message out to a wide variety of people who may be interested in our programming.  You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you were the person who helped someone find our organization and programming in addition to keeping them informed about future offerings.

Description:

Communication Assistants are responsible for making phone calls and sending texts to lists of individuals who expressed interest in our programming or who may be interested in our programming. Calls maybe giving them information about our programming or programming in the community that may be of interest to them.

Qualifications:

Communication Assistants must have a clear speaking voice and hearing should be normal or better. They must possess strong customer service skills. They should be able to work with a low level of independence. They should be able to communicate well with a wide variety of individuals from various social and cultural groups.  Communication Assistants should possess a moderate level of finger and hand dexterity.
