Supporting Siena Francis House as a meal service volunteer is one of the most impactful ways to serve those experiencing homelessness in the Omaha community. As a meal service volunteer, you will help prepare the dining room, set tables with needed items, and assist our kitchen staff in serving over 300 meals. Tasks may include plating food, distributing utensils, and ensuring guests have what they need for a positive dining experience. After service, you will work alongside our staff and other volunteers to clean and maintain the dining area. Your help is invaluable in making sure everyone is served efficiently, and with dignity and care.

We're glad you're here.

Join us for a meaningful day of service as we honor the legacy of those who supported our nation during the 9/11 attacks. Habitat for Humanity of Omaha invites volunteers to participate in our 9/11 Service and Remembrance Build Day, a hands-on opportunity to help construct a home for a local family in need.

TASKS: 

We use our volunteers for just about every aspect of the build from framing, and siding, to finishing and cleaning up - so it’s best to register with a big heart and open mind. Generally speaking, your entire build site will have one main task for the day and it will be indicated in the “Additional Event Details” section at least two days prior to your volunteer date.  

SKILL REQUIREMENTS:  

No tools or experience are necessary, our supervisors will be happy to train everyone on the tasks of the day.  

DRESS CODE: 

Please wear closed toe shoes/weather-appropriate clothing. Remember this is an active construction site when choosing your attire.  

AGE RESTRICTIONS: 

Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. Volunteers between 16 and 18 years of age will have restricted use of tools and other equipment.  

WHAT WE’LL PROVIDE: 

We’ll provide personal protection equipment (Hardhats, glasses, earplugs, gloves, etc.), the necessary tools, skilled staff to train you, and a safe build site.  

WHAT TO BRING: 

Please bring a reusable water bottle so that you can fill up at our water station as needed.

ADDRESS/LOCATION: 

We wish that we could tell you where you’ll be right when you sign up, however our build schedule is always being updated. Most of the time we know what location you’ll be assigned (and the task) on the Friday of the week before your volunteer date. You can check back using this link to see if there have been any updates to your date in the additional details section. Our system will automatically send you an email two days prior to your volunteer date with the information. If any changes are made after the two day prior reminder, we will email and text all affected volunteers. 

PARKING: 

Please park in any legal parking area on the street near the home you are volunteering at. Please be mindful of the people who reside on the street and do not park near driveways or fire hydrants. If you are volunteering with people you know we suggest carpooling as much as possible to reduce the number of cars parked in the area.  

If you are volunteering at one of our warehouses you are able to park in any of the available parking stalls. 

WEATHER CANCELATIONS: 

For snow-related cancellations, Habitat Omaha will follow the closing policy of Metropolitan Community College (MCC).  If MCC classes are canceled or scheduled for early dismissal, volunteers will also be canceled/dismissed. 

In most cases we will be canceling (or dismissing early) outdoor work assignments for volunteers will be anything lower than a temperature of 10° or higher than a temperature of 95°. 

We will email and text volunteers who are signed up if there is a cancelation or location change.

A variety of different shifts and tasks are available. Please specify your shirt size in your CERVIS profile when signing up, so we can have sufficient quantities on site.

Supply Runners (4:00 PM - 7:00 PM & 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM): Ensure vendors are stocked with necessary supplies, including plates, napkins, and ice. (Able to walk during duration of event, able to lift and carry 20lbs) 

VIP Tent Support (4:00 PM - 7:00 PM & 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM): Maintain the VIP area by restocking supplies and keeping the area clean.

Volunteer tickets will be discounted to $37.50 per ticket. Once you have registered for a volunteer shift, your promo code will be included in a confirmation email.

Tom & Liz, a senior couple, are looking for some skilled volunteers to help with hooking up new drain spouts to the garage, installing a kitchen sink, and possibly patching a leak on the bay window and the roof.

Volunteers are needed to help with general yard clean-up around the Musserville Church, where they host the Senior Center. 

Volunteers are needed to help paint the stoop at the residence and help with general yard clean-up/work.

Volunteers are needed to organize our donation area and do light cleaning in our shared living spaces (living room, dining room, and kitchen). ​Volunteers would be organizing clothing, personals/toiletries, feminine hygiene products, diapers, cleaning products, school supplies, food items, and much more. We provide basic necessities every month for up to the 77 families staying in New Directions Shelter, The Home Connection, and our other housing programs.​

​This is a great project for a single person to work on, or you can sign up to bring a group (up to 10 people at a time). Volunteers should be 12 and older. Youth 14 years of age and younger should have an adult on site with them while volunteering.

Interpreters will assist families and other Ready Set School volunteers by providing language interpretation throughout the event. Volunteers will help families communicate with staff, understand event instructions, and access available services such as school supplies, backpacks, haircuts, vaccinations, and health screenings. Interpreters will also help answer questions and ensure families feel welcomed and supported as they move through the event.

Kids Can mentors are dedicated volunteers who provide guidance, support, and encouragement. Mentoring matches meet once a week connecting through fun activities focused on STEM, the arts, reading and the interests of mentees. All mentors receive training and ongoing support from Kids Can staff. The year-long friends provide a caring, stable influence in a kid’s life.

Where and when does mentoring take place?
The mentoring takes place on-site at Kids Can Community Center on 48th & Q Streets and Druid Hill elementary - a Kids Can Site, from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM.

What kinds of activities do mentors and mentees do together?
Mentor pairs decide what they want to do together. Activities range from building a robot, reading a story, to baking a pizza, to performing science experiments! Kids Can provides the activities and supplies necessary for your mentoring partnership needs.

Rebuilding Together is looking for volunteers to help with a ramp build.

City of Muscatine is looking for help converting landscape beds from mulch beds to rock beds. This will include raking and removing existing mulch. Laying of weed barrier matting and laying of rock throughout the landscape beds around the City Hall parking lot.

Jean is looking for help with general yardwork. This would include weeding and cutting down old brush. 

Helen is looking for help with general yard work. This would include weeding, mowing, etc. 

Clark house is looking for volunteers to help with weeding and winding up the gardening for the year. This will include helping with trimming plants back, deadheading plants/flowers, and general cleanup of the flower beds.

Many families and individuals in our community struggle daily to secure enough food to eat. The Coralville Community Food Pantry (CCFP) works to address this issue by offering weekly food assistance to anyone in Coralville who needs it.

CCFP is a client-choice based pantry, which means it operates much like your local grocery store. Volunteers help prepare the pantry for our open hours to the public. Duties may include: unloading food deliveries, sorting, stocking shelves, cleaning, etc. Opportunities exist Tuesday through Saturday, with some flexibility in time of shift.

Many families and individuals in our community struggle daily to secure enough food to eat and they often have to overcome additional barriers such as transportation and housing. The Coralville Community Food Pantry (CCFP) works to address this issue by offering weekly food deliveries to anyone in Coralville or Tiffin who needs it. Volunteer drivers will pick up pre-packaged groceries, up to 7 per route and deliver them around Coralville and Tiffin for a no-contact, front door delivery.  Routes usually take no longer than an hour to complete.  Deliveries can be done at any moment in time between Tuesday and Saturday from 9:30 - 6 PM.

Food Pantry is looking for an individual to help prepare food orders.  Orders come in all through out the day and a volunteer would be very much appreciated to help pre-bag some orders based on family size, and help stock the pantry.  Flexible hours. Must be able to lift 20-25 lbs.

As a Guest Services volunteer, you are the friendly face and helping hands that keep The Wanderwood Gardens safe, beautiful, and welcoming for every visiting family! While Guest Services volunteers assist with a variety of tasks throughout the day, our Afternoon Shift plays a critical role in putting the Gardens "to bed" and ensuring our attractions are fresh and ready for the next morning's guests.

Key Closing Duties Include:

Attraction Reset: Stroll through our whimsical activity zones to tidy up, sweep pathways, and reset play elements so everything is in its place.

Cottage Closing: Help close down the Cottage Learning Center, including light sweeping and vacuuming.

Facility Support: Empty trash and recycling receptacles throughout the main areas and assist with a light cleaning/stocking of the visitor restrooms.

Guest Assistance: Answer final visitor questions and share a warm farewell with families as they head home at the end of the day.

Shift Details & Expectations:

Qualifications: Friendly attitude, attention to detail, and ability to perform light physical activity (walking, sweeping, bending).

Attire: Branded Wanderwood Volunteer t-shirt, neat pants or shorts, and comfortable walking shoes.

Onboarding: No prior experience needed! On-the-job training is provided directly by your Guest Services team at the start of your shift.

Parking: Please park in the DABG in any area outside of our main visitor parking lot to save spaces for guests.

Program description:

Renewed Hope is a ministry of the Grinnell Friends Church located in Grinnell Iowa. The work of the ministry is done by volunteers and funded by free will donations.  We are passionate about helping people get the home furnishings needed to make a house their home. Often times they are starting over and have little. Other times they just need to fill in some gaps. Either way, we want to help. There are many generous people that are willing to donate. There are also a lot of usable home furnishings that end up in the trash. We want to connect both of those to people in need.

Duties:

·       Help pick up and deliver home furnishings.

·       Greet and assist community members as they visit the store for home furnishings.

Skills required:

●      RSVP volunteers must be 55 years of age or older.

●      Ability to help lift and move furniture.

●      Able to keep information confidential

●      Positive attitude and willing to serve families in need

●      Relate well to others and take a team approach.

Amount of Time: 3-5 hours

Time of Day: Help is needed moving furniture on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month from 8am-1pm.

If you have not volunteered in this capacity at the art center previously, then we must conduct an interview, and you will need to pass a background check before you may volunteer. Email director@bluffstrokes.org to schedule an interview and complete the necessary background check. 

In this role volunteers will be expected to provide an extra set of hands during art camp.  Volunteers will help set up the youth activities, provide additional supervision, and help with tear down and clean up. 

The DMARC Food Pantry at West Des Moines Human Services is in need of volunteers to assist clients with food orders, stock shelves, rotate inventory, package personal care items and accept donations. Volunteers will help families shop to meet their food and personal care needs. Some lifting is required. Morning and afternoon shifts are available, Monday through Friday as well as Tuesdays from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Shifts are in two to three hour increments. Volunteers may either commit to one shift per week, or volunteer intermittently as a sub. The Clothing Closet at West Des Moines Human Services is in need of volunteers to accept, sort and straighten donations of clothing, shoes, toys, towels, linens, blankets, home decor and housewares. Volunteers will also assist clients as needed and keep the room neat and organized. Morning and afternoon shifts available, Monday through Friday. Shifts are in two to three hour increments. Volunteers may commit to a regular weekly shift, or volunteer on an intermittent basi.  Opportunities also available on Tuesday evenings from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Some lifting is required. On Saturday, August 29 at 8:30 am we will meet in the big parking lot near the tennis courts.  We will be doing beautification projects throughout the park such as weeding and garden clean up.  Tools will be provided but feel free to bring your favorite rakes, hand trowels, gloves, weed popper or other garden tools you like to use!  Volunteers can make a big difference to enhance the beautiful parks that we all enjoy.

The Meals on Wheels Hydroponic Farm is a 3,000 square foot indoor farm capable of producing 20,000 pounds of leafy greens a year. Our farm provides some of our most at risk populations in the metro a source of fresh, healthy greens year-round. We also provide greens to other WesleyLife and local communities.

Every weekday, Wesley Life Meals on Wheels prepares and delivers nearly 2,000 hot, nutritious lunches to homebound older adults, veterans, and people living with disabilities. Overview

The Lakin Foundation Child Development Center at EM relies on dedicated volunteers to help create a nurturing, healthy environment for young children. The Kitchen Volunteer plays a key role in supporting the center’s mission by assisting with the preparation and delivery of nutritious meals and snacks that fuel children’s learning and growth.

Key Responsibilities

The Bloom Senior Center in Glenwood, Iowa provides a friendly place for community members to socialize, share a meal and connect with friends.  Bloom Senior Center volunteers are like family and are important to the day-to-day function of the Bloom Senior Center.

Volunteer Position Descriptions: 

Nutrition Support:

·      Open Bloom Senior Center M-F, make coffee/beverages, check with delivery person for home delivered meals to ensure everything is ready, check delivery sheet, contact Connections Area Agency on Aging if something is missing for the day’s meals both homebound and congregate, take temps of food, turn on dishwasher, sanitizer, take temperature strips/record, 10:45 am get homebound meals ready; 11:00 am/set up tables according to count for congregate meals, serve clients lunch and clean-up.

·      Check on client if signed up for congregate meal and didn’t attend.

·      Distribute menu calendars.

·      Take reservations for meals for next day by 9:30 a.m.; notify Connections Area Agency on Aging of meal count.

·      Socialization during mealtimes.

Food Pantry:

·      Sunday evening volunteer picks up unsold, donated Panera Bread (Council Bluffs) bread, bagels, and baked goods through Day-End Dough-Nation program.

·      Monday morning sort donated Panera Bread into packages for community members to pick up from Bloom Senior Center.

·      Once a month volunteer picks up donated food from Intercultural Senior Center, 5545 Center Street, Omaha, Nebraska. Food is bagged by Bloom Senior Center volunteers.  Clients who signed up for a bag come to pick up and volunteers assist in taking bags of food to client’s car.  Reminder calls are made to clients who didn’t pick up bag.

·      Collection box for food donations for Mills County Ministerial Association.

·      Sign up “special/big” meals for holidays.

·      Provide appropriate contacts for family checks when possible signs of elder abuse.

·      Assist with referrals to/from Mills County Public Health.

Reception/Special Events:

·      Answer phones.

·      Inform clients of important topics and events.

·      Set up, work and clean up for special events such as 3rd Saturday morning Breakfasts (free will offering), Root Beer Floats during Farmer’s Market and Garage Sales.  Proceeds benefit all of the activities of Bloom Senior Center.

·      Provide appropriate contacts for family checks when possible signs of elder abuse.

·      Assist with referrals to/from Mills County Public Health.

·      Assist Mills County Public Health once month for blood pressure checks.

·      Attendance at monthly Inservice meetings.

·      Maintenance duties of Bloom Senior Center which include changing filters, taking out trash, pull weeds, spray.

These assignments provide socialization for seniors.  Whether engaging seniors in group activities, learning a new skill, or nutrition, each assignment contributes directly to seniors.

Back of House (BOH) Volunteers support the technical and operational side of theater productions. ·      Attend the Pen Pal Kickoff and Match meeting in the fall.

·      Complete an All About Me profile form to introduce yourself to the student.

·      Write letters to the Pen Pal(s) from September to April/May.

·      Mail each letter to the teacher within a week of receiving the student’s letter. Letters come about once a month.

·      Attend the Pen Pal Meet & Greet party at your student’s school.

Amount of time: Pen Pals usually spend about a half hour to an hour writing each letter.

The Turnbull Child Development Center provides nurturing, high quality early childhood development and care.

This volunteer position ROCKS! RSVP Infant Companions spend special time with infants by rocking, reading and interacting one-on-one. 

The infant room is fully staffed with dedicated teachers who supervise and take care of all the basic needs (read: they change the diapers). The volunteer’s role is to supplement that care by spreading a little extra joy through their interactions with the infants.

Studies show that positive, one-on-one social interaction contributes to infant brain, physical and language development and helps them build trust and confidence. You are a part of that healthy development! (and it’s good for YOU, too)

The RSVP Childcare Classroom Helper:   Your job requires you to bring your listening ears, your patience, your love for children and lots of smiles as you help children and teachers in their daycare and learning journey. This volunteer will provide classroom help and companionship to daycare students and teachers at Turnbull Child Development Center.

Program description: Education provides critical skills for life. To help students achieve their full potential, the Turnbull Child Development Center is seeking volunteers to aid in classroom activities, assisting children ages 1-12 and their teachers with playtime and other classroom activities. Volunteers will be asked to follow teachers’ instructions while working with children and assist the teacher with preparation and other classroom activities.

Duties:

●      Interact with children ages 1-12 and be a welcoming adult face

●      Provide help to children and teachers as needed.  This does not include hands on care.

●      Protect the privacy and confidentiality of students and their families

Skills required:

●      Must be 55 years of age or older.

●      Must successfully pass a background check.

●      Relate well to staff, volunteers and students and work with a team approach.

●      Willingness to support children in the childcare setting.

Supervisor:  Volunteers will be supervised by the staff of Turnbull Child Development Center with overall supervision provided by the Director.

Amount of Time:   2-hour weekly shifts, varies – we will work with your schedule.  A minimum of 1 shift weekly is appreciated, but feel free to take more!

Program description:  The Restored Depot and WWII Veteran’s Museum offers two volunteer opportunities including greeting museum visitors and helping them to enjoy the museum to the fullest; Flower Garden Assistant during Spring/Summer/Fall - assisting with weeding and care of outdoor flower beds.  Training is available to help you be better informed about the Depot and the Museum so that you can provide visitors with an educational experience.  Depending on volunteers’ area of interest help is needed with database input for collections, research for local history or artifacts, assisting with exhibits – research, labeling, arranging, etc.  There are also opportunities to assist with special events. 

Location: The Restored Depot and WWII Veteran’s Museum (305 South Second St., Red, Iowa, IA)

Duties – Greeter and Tour Guide:

·       Attending training for specific areas of interest.

·       Greet and engage with visitors, answering questions and encouraging discussion.

·       Lead guided tours of the museum, sharing knowledge about exhibits and the history of Red Oak.

·       Dusting and cleaning the top of the glass exhibits as time permits.

·       Promote the Restored Depot and WWII Veteran’s Museum throughout the community.

Duties – Research Assistant:

·       Attending training for specific areas of interest.

·       Assist staff with archival research and cataloging historical materials.

·       Compile information for exhibits and educational programs.

·       Organize and maintain research files and resources.

·       Promote Restored Burlington Northern RR Depot/WW II Museum throughout the community.

Duties – Special Events:

·       Attending training for specific areas of interest.

·       Assist in planning and executing museum events.

·       Support event setup, registration, and logistics on the day of the event.

·       Promote the Restored Depot and WWII Veteran’s Museum throughout the community.

Duties – Flower Garden Assistant:

·       Plant flowers during spring months.

·       Weed and maintain the flower beds.

·       Prepare beds for winter.

Skills required:

●      RSVP volunteers must be 55 years of age or older.

●      Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

●      Passion for history and community engagement.

●      Ability to listen and solve problems.

●      Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

●      Flexibility to take on various tasks as needed.

Supervision:  Volunteers will be supervised by Museum Manager, Jolene Crawford.

Shifts:  Greeter/Tour Guide shifts are 2 hrs. in length on a weekly basis.  Flower Garden Assistant is flexible and can be as needed to maintain the beds.

Volunteers will be asked to follow teachers’ detailed instructions with a small group of students and engage in reading activities.

Duties:

●      Interact with elementary students and be a welcoming adult face.

●      Provide help with reading as needed.

●      Protect the privacy and confidentiality of students and their families.

Skills required:

●      Must be 55 years of age or better.

●      Relate well to staff, volunteers and children, and work with a team approach.

●      Willingness to support students in their academic work.

●      Must successfully pass a background check.

Amount of Time:    1–2-hour weekly shifts – we will work with your schedule.

Time of Day: As scheduled during school hours, Monday through Friday.

Supervisor:  Supervision is provided by the Classroom Teacher.

Through a variety of interventions, students can gain the coping skills and resilience they need to assist with their social, educational, and emotional outcomes.
