With a goal and commitment to supporting parents and caregivers in marginalized communities, Monsoon Asians and Pacific Islanders in Solidarity (Monsoon) is organizing its 3rd Annual Baby Gear Swap. This mutual aid community event allows participants to freely give and take baby items, specifically for babies and toddlers ages 0 to 5 years. Participants do not need to bring anything to take items home. This Baby Gear Swap is communal and open to all who care for infants and young children.

Join United Way of the Midlands as we inventory supplies for our upcoming Good on the Go projects. Volunteers will assist staff in inventorying supplies for upcoming kit builds in the community. These kit builds will benefit local nonprofit partners.

Assist neighbors as they shop through the food pantry. Volunteers receive training in civil rights and food safety.

Every pound of food you rescue is a meal for a family in need.

When grocery stores have surplus food, you help make sure it never goes to waste — and never goes far. As a Food Rescue Volunteer, you'll pick up donations from local retailers and bring them directly to the Bidwell Pantry, where families in our community are counting on what you carry through the door.

This is a great fit for someone who wants a consistent, active role with a tangible impact they can see every single week.

What you'll do: Meet at the Bidwell Pantry, then head out with a staff member or fellow volunteer to nearby grocery stores and retailers. You'll help load donated food into the vehicle, return to the pantry to unload and properly store items, and keep a quick record of what was collected. You're back at the pantry and done by 10:00 AM — a great way to make a real difference before your day gets started.

When we need you: Fridays, 8:00–10:00 AM

Choose one day per week that works consistently with your schedule. Regular volunteers are especially valuable — stores get to know you, and the relationships you build make the work even smoother over time.

We are seeking dedicated volunteers to support our organization during weekday hours. Volunteers are needed to assist with a variety of tasks throughout the building, including welcoming and greeting members of the public as they arrive to donate items, organizing and sorting donations, and preparing them for display so veterans can easily access them. Additional help is also needed with general cleaning and upkeep to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.

Join us this growing season at the Cultivate Hope Urban Farm! We are looking for dedicated volunteer gardeners to help out this season with various tasks such as landscaping, planting and harvesting produce, trash collection, beautification, and general maintenance of the farm space.

The Cultivate Hope Urban Farm is Iowa's first urban farm, built on land where houses had been demolished after the flood of 2008, and provides 10,000+ lbs of produce annually to the surrounding community. The farm also serves as a valuable space for community building and youth education.

Our food pantry & clothing closet is available to anyone who comes - there are no income restrictions or requirements. Families can get a 3 day supply of food, personal care, diapers, produce, milk, meat, & eggs each month. They can also get 5 items of clothing per household member each month as well. They can also come everyday we’re open for our Anytime items which encompasses items like bread, prepared food, or extra/seasonal produce.

We need volunteers to safely, respectfully, and efficiently run our pantry and clothing closet. Many of these opportunities are during our pantry operating hours, but there are needs outside of pantry hours as well, including food rescue opportunities, truck inventory unloading, and pantry restocking.

We need help with setting up the Dupaco Main Space for the Celebrate Africa Event

JUMP is a school-based community mentoring program that serves Johnston students in grades 6-12. Mentors act as positive role models who listen and help set goals, while reinforcing basic skills, attitudes and other life lessons. Currently, we have over 100 community members paired with current Johnston students.  We are always in need of more community mentors.

We are looking for individuals who are willing to come and give 1 hour each week of the school year to a JCSD student to be a positive role model, a listening ear, and a guiding presence. Apply today by filling out the JUMP application

Take the stage as an actor at The Grand Opera House, the oldest surviving community theatre in the Dubuque area! Our seasons include several plays and musicals that are performed entirely by community members. Throughout the year, we offer opportunities for performers of all ages to participate in our productions.

Auditions are hosted periodically throughout the season, typically 5 to 7 weeks prior to a show's opening. Performance experience is not a requirement to participate on stage at The Grand. Anyone in the community is welcome to audition for our shows!

About Families Forward:  Families Forward (previously Bidwell Riverside Center and Hawthorn Hill) has four main programs: Bidwell Pantry, Child Development Center, New Directions Shelter (emergency housing), and The Home Connection (long-term housing). For over 100 years, our mission has been to provide compassionate, life-changing assistance to families and their path to self-sufficiency.​

Volunteers are needed to organize our donation area and do light cleaning in our shared living spaces (living room, dining room, and kitchen). ​Volunteers would be organizing clothing, personals/toiletries, feminine hygiene products, diapers, cleaning products, school supplies, food items, and much more. We provide basic necessities every month for up to the 77 families staying in New Directions Shelter, The Home Connection, and our other housing programs.​

​This is a great project for a single person to work on, or you can sign up to bring a group (up to 10 people at a time). Volunteers should be 12 and older. Youth 14 years of age and younger should have an adult on site with them while volunteering.

Join us every Monday from 4-6pm at the Feed Iowa First Shop.  Feed Iowa First manages 9 fields across Cedar Rapids plus 11 acres on the Wanatee Farm. Tasks on Monday nights will vary according to season.  During the summer duties include washing and prepping vegetables to go out for community distribution, working in our raised beds, harvesting, washing bins, and getting everything in order for the week!  We have tasks for those who cannot lift too, and seated activities!

We are looking for a volunteer to keep our tillers, weed eaters, augers, and mowers in good working condition during the season and fix equipment as needed. 

Feed Iowa First will pay for all parts and can provide a workspace. This is a flexible volunteer opportunity and projects can be arranged to fit within your schedule.

Volunteers Needed to Serve as Guardians for Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Mid-Step Services, Inc. is a Not For Profit dedicated to providing residential, vocational, educational, and recreational services to people with intellectual disabilities to help them reach their highest potential.  We are seeking volunteers that would be willing to serve as Guardians for some of the individuals we serve.  A Guardian is a court appointed substitute decision maker for a protected person: individuals who are incapable of making decisions about issues like medical care, residential placement, and other important personal matters.  Family members, friends, or other supporting individuals typically serve in this role; however, some of the individuals we serve do not have friends or family that are willing or capable of assisting them as their Guardian.  We’re looking for caring community members to help.

As a Guardian, a volunteer would be expected to get to know the protected person, understand their needs or problems, and seek information relevant to making informed decisions on their behalf.  Once a year, the Guardian is required to provide the Court with a status report on their protected person.  Serving as a protected person’s Guardian does not impose financial responsibility for the protected person or make the Guardian liable for the actions of the protected person. 

All protected persons needing Guardians are currently residing with and receiving services from Mid-Step Services.  MSS staff are available to assist with questions and guidance for volunteers both before and after appointment as a Guardian.

Friendly Visitor volunteers are matched with an older adult whose social network has decreased due to reduced mobility, the relocation of family and friends, or shrinking peer group. You will be matched with an older adult with similar interests, to meet one hour a week (or more) on a day and time mutually agreed upon.  Talk Hawkeye sports, bake cookies, share family photos, or simply chat about current events. 

Volunteers will apply with Aging Services, pass background checks, and go through a brief training on volunteer policy and procedure.

Aging Services Home Repair & Accessibility Program volunteers use basic skills and tools to fix minor problems in an older adult's home. Your handy work will help a senior to continue to live independently in their own home. There's no place like home!

Volunteers must fill out an application, pass background checks, and must own some basic tools to participate. We will need you to be able to make simple repairs around the home of a client, adhere to the scope of work, and work with Aging Services staff to arrange for the purchase of minor supply needs (which you will be reimbursed for).

Pathways in Iowa City, a program of Aging Services, is looking for an energetic person to help with small group activities.  The opportunity could involve leading a small card game in our library, helping our Activity Coordinator with arts and crafts, leading book club, gardening, etc.  This is a fun and exciting opportunity that will surely build relationships!

Food Sorting: Food Bank of Iowa receives donations of food items that need labeled, counted and boxed. We need volunteers to make this possible and opportunities are scheduled in advance before we know what the food items may be when they arrive. Cedar Valley Preschool and Child Care Center is seeking some energetic, young volunteers who enjoy spending time with young children to volunteer with our summer program filled with activities and excitement! As a conversation partner, you play a crucial role in facilitating language practice for refugees through regular meetings in the comfort of their homes or within the community, fostering a supportive environment for effective language development. This opportunity consists of working with youth under the age of 18.  Youth art classes typically take place in the mornings from 9:45 to 12:15.  Experience with youth is preferred, and volunteers must pass a background check. 

Your shift starts 15 minutes before a class begins as you assist the instructor in setting up for the class.  (I'm not sure what happens in these classes but giving someone an idea of how they will help children might be helpful.)  At the end of the class, you will help clean up the space and put away art materials.

An APDA Support Group Facilitator will lead an ongoing once a month support group for individuals with Parkinson's disease and their family members.  Qualifications include excellent communication skills and understanding group dynamics.  Iowa APDA will provide training for the group leaders and resources and topics for education.

APDA Iowa is seeking Social Group Facilitators to lead community groups of individuals with Parkinson's and their families.  The volunteer will lead a group "get to know you" activity and encourage participation.

Medical Appointment Drivers bring patients to and from critical medical appointments. You will drive between patient homes and their appointed medical facility. Rides are needed within Cass County as well as from surrounding communities and to medical providers in Des Moines, Council Bluff, Carroll, etc.

Mileage reimbursement ($.50/mile) is available when driving your personal vehicle. On some occasions, a vehicle may be provided for the specific trip.

ReStore volunteers help with all the daily tasks of running the store. Tasks will include unloading donations, assisting with small projects, cleaning, re-merchandising products, and organizing the different departments within the store.  We also need volunteers willing to ride in our truck along with staff to pick up donated items within the Iowa City and Coralville areas. If you enjoy small projects and interacting with others while helping a great cause, the ReStore is the perfect opportunity for you!

Help build and rehabilitate homes along with Habitat for Humanity staff and hard-working people in our community. Home-owners will work to volunteer on the construction of their own home and will pay a long-term, affordable mortgage for the cost of the house.

Volunteers will help us with the majority exterior and interior construction, demolition and remodeling work at a home. No prior skills or knowledge are necessary! We train you and give you all the tools you need to accomplish the tasks for each shift. Learn new construction skills, make new memories, meet new friends, and help give back to the community!

Stuff the Bus book drive is being held at Athene on Tuesday, May 12th from 11am to 1pm. Our goal is to collect 30,000 books for children from birth to middle school. (Our greatest need is for early childhood books -- birth to age 8.) Books are donated to childcare centers and child-serving programs in Dallas, Polk, and Warren counties to help us reach our goals in the area of Education Success.

Volunteers are needed at United Way after the book drive to assist in sorting books into pre-determined categories. By sorting the books on Wednesday, May 13th, it will make it easier for the community to navigate the room in a safe and efficient way ensuring they find the age appropriate books for the youth they serve during the distribution days. 

Volunteers will continued to be needed during distribution days (starting Thursday, May 14th) to help keep the room tidy and assist community members as they come in to pick up their books. The final shift on May 19th will be a clean-up shift.

The mission of the National Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Association, together with its state and local members, is to support and promote court-appointed volunteer advocacy so that every abused or neglected child can be safe, establish permanence and have the opportunity to thrive.

The Iowa Court Appointed Special Advocate Program recruits, trains and supports community volunteers to serve as an effective voice in court for abused and neglected children, strengthening efforts to ensure that each child is living in a safe, permanent and nurturing home. The Court Appointed Special Advocate is typically assigned one case at a time and does a variety of things to promote the child's best interests: information gathering, assessment, facilitation, monitoring and advocacy. The judge assigning the CASA to a case has ordered them to become familiar with all aspects of the child's life. They are expected to keep in regular contact with the child to develop a relationship that allows them to understand and communicate the child's needs and wishes. Each CASA generally is assigned one child or sibling group at a time and typically stays with their assigned case until the child's permanency is established and the case is closed. Some of a CASA's most important duties are to maintain contact with and collect information from the child's parents; the attorneys and guardians ad litem involved with the case; HHS workers; and, foster parents, therapists, teachers, doctors, relatives and anyone else who has knowledge of the child's situation.

CASAs are required to regularly submit reports to the Court that present the facts of the case, that describe how the Court's orders are being followed and that offer recommendations regarding the child's best interests. Hospice Volunteers perform many important duties. Whether providing companionship to a patient, bereavement support, administrative/office work or Veteran-to-Veteran — volunteers play a vital role that enables Heartland Hospice to meet the needs of our patients, their families and the community.

Our volunteers are essential to providing the level of care and support that patients and their families expect from hospice care helping to make Heartland Hospice one of the leading hospice providers in the region.

Volunteers lend an ear to the patient when they express themselves. Oftentimes their presence alone brings comfort and support. Hospice volunteers also enjoy spending time with the patient, and participating in some of their favorite pastimes, like playing chess, cards, or watching TV.

Volunteers assist food pantry visitors in a personal way, accompanying them as they shop and choose food in our Market Choice Pantry.  Volunteers may also assist with weighing carts and helping clients to load their vehicles.  Volunteers may also assist with organizing and stocking pantry shelves and helping keep the pantry clean.

Many families and individuals in our community struggle daily to secure enough food to eat. The Coralville Community Food Pantry (CCFP) works to address this issue by offering weekly food assistance to anyone in Coralville who needs it.

CCFP is a client-choice based pantry, which means it operates much like your local grocery store. Volunteers help prepare the pantry for our open hours to the public. Duties may include: unloading food deliveries, sorting, stocking shelves, cleaning, etc. Opportunities exist Tuesday through Saturday, with some flexibility in time of shift.

(Mon. to Fri; mornings or afternoons). If you have an hour or two to give each week, we need consistent, long-term volunteers to serve our eager-to-learn older adults! We need instructors for 1 hour each weekday between the hours of 10:20 AM to 11:20 AM or 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM.
