Write a monthly letter to a student and receive a letter back!  Pen Pals are matched with the same student (5th grader) throughout the school year.  

West Des Moines Human Services is seeking volunteers for its Anytime Food Program which distributes donated and rescued food items.  This opportunity is available weekdays from 7:45 am to 9:00 am at West Des Moines Human Services; currently, we need a volunteer on Mondays and/or Wednesdays.  Volunteers help with food set-up, organization and distribution of the food items.  Distribution takes place outside, rain or shine. Volunteers are asked to commit to one shift per week.  Some lifting involved (up to 25 lbs). Please note, we are not able to accomodate those in need of court-ordered community service hours.  Prior to volunteering, you must make an appointment to visit our office for an interview/tour and to complete volunteer forms.  A background check is also required prior to volunteering.  Please call 515-222-3663 for additional information or email HSvolunteer@wdm.iowa.gov. 

The DMARC Food Pantry at West Des Moines Human Services is in need of volunteers to stock shelves, rotate inventory, package personal care items, assist with food rescue, and unload donations. Lifting or moving of up to 50 lbs is required. Morning and afternoon shifts are available, Monday through Friday. In general, shifts are two to three hours, but this is flexible. Please note, this position is open to volunteers who can help on an ongoing basis by committing to a regular weekly shift. We will be serving a free, warm dinner to go, for families and our community, to ensure everyone can enjoy a Christmas meal. Dinners can be picked up on Christmas Day from Noon-5 PM at Kitchen Spaces, 1139 24th St, Des Moines.

The Young Women’s Resource Center offers in-school and after-school groups where students can connect, learn, and grow in a safe and supportive space. Many of our participants face food insecurity, and snacks make a real difference in helping them stay nourished and focused. We’re collecting individually packaged grab-and-go snacks for our groups.

We’re preparing for our Annual Winter Concert, a beloved tradition where our students and their families come together to sing, laugh, and celebrate the holiday season together. 

This special event not only celebrates the holiday season but also gives us the opportunity to make sure every one of our 90 students—from 6 weeks to 5-year-olds—feels the magic of the holidays. Many of our families face financial challenges, and we want to ensure that no child is left out of the celebration. Our goal is simple: to provide each student with at least one meaningful holiday gift, regardless of their family's circumstances.

We are asking for help with gift wrapping close to 90 gifts this holiday season. Your generosity will directly bring smiles and excitement to our students during their winter concert. Please consider joining us for a afternoon of gift wrapping!

Meals play a critical role in supporting our participants who are facing food insecurity. You can either prepare a homemade meal or arrange for a meal to be delivered or catered. This is a great opportunity for individuals or groups! Please note that we do not have on-site kitchen facilities for meal preparation. If you choose to prepare meals at home, we do require a brief Food Safety training, which can be completed online from the comfort of your home.

Family style meals for 20-25 people should include a main dish, two sides, and a gallon of milk. Dessert is optional. Meals can be dropped off in re-heatable containers such as a foil tray or crockpot.

As a Childcare Volunteer, you’ll provide our Young Mom’s children with a safe space to play while their mom is learning parenting skills, financial literacy, what to expect in pregnancy and more. We currently have openings for childcare volunteers on two evenings: every Monday from 5:45 – 7:30 p.m. and some Tuesdays. Scheduling is flexible, a long-term commitment is preferred. An interview, background check, and childcare-focused orientation are required for this volunteer role.

WesleyLife Hospice is looking for compassionate and caring individuals to give the gift of time and presence to individuals in Central Iowa. Our patients needs this more than ever. Volunteers support patients and families in a variety of ways. Calling all cooks!   Our Casserole Club is a fun opportunity to support the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House by preparing casseroles to freeze and serve at a later date.  Groups are responsible for buying groceries for the casserole of their choosing, preparing the casserole, and cleaning up after the cooking.    Feel free to share a special family recipe or create something new!

We generally ask that you make enough for 65 people.  (3-4 9" x 11" pans is usually about right).   We'll provide all utensils, pots & pans, and the aluminum pans with lids for freezing.

We need at least one person each Saturday to work at the Roosevelt Community Center Computer Lab/Lending Library from 9:55 am-2:10 pm. We will officially open our lab on Monday, October 27th so we need someone to fill in starting Saturday November 1st!

Many families and individuals in our community struggle daily to secure enough food to eat and they often have to overcome additional barriers such as transportation and housing. The Coralville Community Food Pantry (CCFP) works to address this issue by offering weekly food deliveries to anyone in Coralville or Tiffin who needs it. Volunteer drivers will pick up pre-packaged groceries, up to 5 per route and deliver them around Coralville and Tiffin for a no-contact, front door delivery.  Routes take no longer than an hour to complete.  Deliveries can be done at any moment in time between Tuesday and Saturday from 9:30 - 7 PM.

PARTICIPATE AS A SALES COORDINATOR

Engage in saving lives from cancer by selling potted mum plants within your company/organization, neighborhood, family and friends. There are five great products to promote, a 4 inch potted mum ($12), a 6 inch potted mum ($20), a Gift of Hope mum ($25) or Cancer Care Package ($25) to be delivered cancer patients at Des Moines area cancer centers and a Gift of Gratitude mum ($25) to be delivered to healthcare workers to be delivered to cancer patients at Des Moines area hospitals. We are recruiting sales coordinators to help us promote the campaign and collect orders both in person and online in late July/early August, turn in your orders and then deliver the 4 and 6 inch potted mums to those who purchased towards the end of August (2026 dates are tbd).  We will take care of delivering the Gift of Hope and Gift of Gratitude mums to the local cancer centers for you and those who purchased them.

Firefly sends out a monthly mailing to everyone newly eligible for Medicaid insurance coverage.  These mailings need to be prepared and stuffed, so some folks with quick fingers and agile wrists would be the perfect fit to get those envelopes ready to mail.  When those we serve receive their mailing, they are filled with resources to connect them to supports they need, as well as information on ensuring their family has a medical and dental home.  These supports help keep families healthy and out of the costly hospital and ER.

The Regional Nurse Leader (RNL) is a front-line leader of the Nursing Network who partners with the local Regional Volunteer Services Officer (RVSO) to recruit health professional volunteers per regional needs. The RNL provides guidance on nursing and health matters and helps build the health professional network in the region. RNLs promote volunteer engagement and satisfaction across the business lines and work to achieve the Volunteer Services Chief Nurse Initiatives. The American Red Cross National Nursing Network is comprised of all Red Cross nurses. Nursing Network leaders recruit and support nurses and other health professionals across all business lines to implement strategic goals of the American Red Cross as articulated in the Chief Nurse Initiatives. The American Red Cross is divided into geographic divisions, regions and chapters for service delivery. Each division has a Division Nurse Leader (DNL) appointed by the Chief Nurse and the Director of the Nursing Network. DNLs appoint Associate Division Nurse Leaders (ADNLs) to support RNLs and to assist them according to the division's unique needs.

Responsibilities

* Proactively support and guide Red Cross units in volunteer recruitment, reception, retention, and recognition to build health professional capacity across all business lines and at all levels of the organization in support of organizational and regional priorities. Assist units in volunteer recruitment to reflect community demographics.

* Act as a resource for nursing and health in the region across all business lines, working collaboratively with Nursing Network leaders and others to achieve the Chief Nurse Initiatives.

* Establish a good working relationship with key leaders at the regional level (e.g., Emergency Services Director, CEO, nurse/health leaders in other business lines).

The Winter Games Competition is scheduled at Sundown Mountain Resort on Monday & Tuesday, January 12th & 13th from 9:00am-3:00pm. We are in need of volunteers to help in several different areas, including Cross Country Ski, Alpine Ski & Snowshoeing. We would love to assist you with getting involved! Our volunteers support our athletes by staging, timing, and handing out awards.  We do have opportunities inside & outside each day.

ReStore volunteers help with all the daily tasks of running the store. Tasks will include unloading donations, assisting with small projects, cleaning, re-merchandising products, and organizing the different departments within the store.  We also need volunteers willing to ride in our truck along with staff to pick up donated items within the Iowa City and Coralville areas. If you enjoy small projects and interacting with others while helping a great cause, the ReStore is the perfect opportunity for you!

The Regional Nurse Leader (RNL) is a front-line leader of the Nursing Network who partners with the local Regional Volunteer Services Officer (RVSO) to recruit health professional volunteers per regional needs. The RNL provides guidance on nursing and health matters and helps build the health professional network in the region. RNLs promote volunteer engagement and satisfaction across the business lines and work to achieve the Volunteer Services Chief Nurse Initiatives. The American Red Cross National Nursing Network is comprised of all Red Cross nurses. Nursing Network leaders recruit and support nurses and other health professionals across all business lines to implement strategic goals of the American Red Cross as articulated in the Chief Nurse Initiatives. The American Red Cross is divided into geographic divisions, regions and chapters for service delivery. Each division has a Division Nurse Leader (DNL) appointed by the Chief Nurse and the Director of the Nursing Network. DNLs appoint Associate Division Nurse Leaders (ADNLs) to support RNLs and to assist them according to the division's unique needs.

This Holiday season, we would like to help our 40 participants who attend the Wesley on Grand Adult Day Center to each have a present to open during our yearly Christmas party. We are primarily looking for every day, personal essentials for both men and women, like socks, lotions, soaps, and lip balm, as well as hair accessories for women (like barrettes and headbands.) Contact Hannah for more specifics. Please drop off items before December 2nd. 

Staff and volunteers help the community by giving a three day supply of food to anyone who needs it. Very little restrictions, anyone over the age of 18 can apply.

TIME COMMITMENT: Minimum one day per week (M, T, W, TH, F) for a minimum of 2 hours (between 3:00pm and 6pm) for a minimum of 1-year. (One semester acceptable for students.)

LOCATION(S): The Youth Programs Mentor/Volunteer could be placed with school aged children at our 6 site locations.

Middle School Lesson

Volunteers are needed to provide encouragement to students and help students complete financial lessons. Lessons occur weekly every Wednesday after school (3:00pm-4:30pm) at the First Congregational Church in Waterloo.  Walk alongside Middle School students, pointing them towards financial and life success through encouragement, role modeling, financial stewardship training, and academic support!

Are you looking for a rewarding opportunity to help youth in the Cedar Valley?  The Job Foundation is a Financial Stewardship Mentoring Program that equips K – 12 students and their families for economic advancement.  We have 80 kids in our program waiting to be matched with a mentor....is it you?!

We are looking for volunteers who are passionate about building relationships that nurture education so that children can learn tools and skills for financial freedom and success. Our vision is "All people achieving financial success".  The minimum requirement is only 4 hours per month.  

The main goal in mentoring is to build a positive, healthy, connection that encourages and develops higher self-esteem in children which can help them achieve success in many ways.  Mentors develop a unique bond and encourage young lives.

For the benefit of students (and volunteers), all The Job Foundation mentors undergo an initial screening, orientation and training, and then receive ongoing volunteer training.  We ask for an 12-month commitment for Mentors as we recognize the need for consistency and trust for children and families. There will also be a required DMV check and a background check. The ability to provide transportation is a requirement. There are also local activities and discounts provided to the matches for fun activities in the area!

Join us for a high-impact volunteer experience! Help package bulk meals that go directly to feeding centers, getting food to children as quickly as possible.

This volume meal packaging project uses the same ingredients and process as our traditional meal packaging, just on a larger scale. Instead of packaging 216 meals into 36 small bags, volunteers package 216 meals into one bulk bag, allowing us to move more meals faster and farther.

Volunteers work together in a team-oriented, assembly-line setting, ensuring every ingredient is accurately measured and packed. We’ll need a few extra hands for lifting, typically 1–2 people per line lifting 10–25 lbs each, so please note that moderate lifting is required.

It’s a hands-on, energizing way to make an immediate impact and help families and communities in need.

SVP meal delivery volunteers are the heart and soul of home-delivered meals programs and touch the lives of homebound seniors and adults with disabilities with food and friendship. Your smile may be the only one they see all day! You may volunteer once a week, once a month, or whenever your schedule permits.

Full description:  RSVP meal delivery volunteers deliver meals and smiles to home-bound individuals. You will be assisting participants to meet 1/3 of their daily nutritional needs, provide a safety check on their wellbeing, and helping them remain living independently in their home. You may sign up for as many or as few days and times as you like. Opportunities are available in Montgomery Counties, and training is provided.

Duties: 

·       The RSVP meal delivery driver delivers meals on a designated route between 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., (Monday through Friday), except for scheduled holidays.

·       Check in with the Senior Center Coordinator and review daily route sheet and note changes before and after each shift.

·       Load meal containers into your vehicle and deliver meals to listed clients.

·       Note and report any significant observations regarding clientele.

·       Return “Insulated Bags” to the Red Oak Senior Center at the end of each shift.

·       Report on the number of hours worked and number of meals delivered each shift on monthly forms provided by the Red Oak Senior Center Coordinator.

We also want to serve our community by providing additional opportunities for education and healthy lifestyles.  Volunteers are being recruited to unlock the building from 5:30-7:30 am and monitor walkers during that timeframe.   With your help, we can make a positive difference in the health of area residents.

Duties:

●      Open the SWITCH building for 5:30-7:30 am public access.

●      Turn on lights in the original building and gymnasium.

●      Greet and monitor walkers throughout that timeframe.

●      Help with presentation set up and clean up.

Amount of Time:   4 hours at events held 4 times each year.  Shifts can be one 4-hour shift or split into two 2-hour shifts.

We also want to serve our community by providing comfortable learning environments and additional opportunities for healthy lifestyles.  Volunteers are being recruited to support our Community Garden and outdoor flowers.  This volunteer will help to maintain the garden, weed, water and harvest. Produce is shared with West Central Community Action for community food boxes.  With your help, we can make a positive difference in the health of area residents.

Duties:

●      Maintain the garden and flowers by weeding, deadheading and watering.

●      Harvest produce.

●      Assist in planning and planting.

●      Work cooperatively with the SWITCH Director.

●      Work with Nishna Production clients & staff in the garden.

●      Weed eating and seasonal leaf removal. 

Skills required:

Your help will improve the services provided by SWITCH staff by adding some additional time to their day.    With your help, we can make a positive difference in the Southwest Iowa community.

Duties:

●      Greet the public at the door and by occasional phone call.

●      Copying and filing.

●      Assist SWITCH staff with other office tasks as needed.

●      Provide occasional facility tours.

●      Work cooperatively with the SWITCH Director.

The RSVP Building Maintenance Volunteer will help keep the shine on for the SWITCH building.  If you like to keep things tidy and enjoy working alone, you might be the perfect fit!  This volunteer will help with brooming the hallway and classroom floors and other light maintenance.  SWITCH has regular cleaning services so you will just be shining things up in between their visits. Your attention to detail will be the key to success.

●      Broom hallways and classroom floors.

●      Other light maintenance.

●      Get your exercise steps in!

●      Work cooperatively with the SWITCH Director.

●      Remove trash, help students take out trash after lunch.

●      Use rolling trash card to take trash to outside trash bin.

Skills required:

●      Must be 55 years of age or older.

●      Successfully pass a background check.

Supervisor:  Volunteers will be supervised by the SWITCH Director.

·      Improve the library environment by dusting shelves and vacuuming carpeted areas.

Duties:  Volunteers would help library staff with the following responsibilities:

Coordinate and schedule our Youth Activities Volunteers to cover activities and after-school hours. Coordinate and schedule our Community Volunteers to meet gardening and educational needs. Coordinate and schedule Book Weeder and Organizational Volunteers to meet the librarians’ needs.  Coordinate and schedule Delivery Volunteers to assure weekly coverage.  Coordinate and schedule other volunteers as programs are added.  Attend an occasional planning meeting with library staff and volunteers.
