WHAT TO EXPECT

If you have not volunteered in this capacity at the art center previously, then we must conduct an interview, and you will need to pass a background check before you may volunteer. Email director@bluffstrokes.org to schedule an interview and complete the necessary background check. 

In this role volunteers will be expected to provide an extra set of hands during art camp.  Volunteers will help set up the youth activities, provide additional supervision, and help with tear down and clean up. 

The DMARC Food Pantry at West Des Moines Human Services is in need of volunteers to assist clients with food orders, stock shelves, rotate inventory, package personal care items and accept donations. Volunteers will help families shop to meet their food and personal care needs. Some lifting is required. Morning and afternoon shifts are available, Monday through Friday as well as Tuesdays from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Shifts are in two to three hour increments. Volunteers may either commit to one shift per week, or volunteer intermittently as a sub. The Clothing Closet at West Des Moines Human Services is in need of volunteers to accept, sort and straighten donations of clothing, shoes, toys, towels, linens, blankets, home decor and housewares. Volunteers will also assist clients as needed and keep the room neat and organized. Morning and afternoon shifts available, Monday through Friday. Shifts are in two to three hour increments. Volunteers may commit to a regular weekly shift, or volunteer on an intermittent basi.  Opportunities also available on Tuesday evenings from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Some lifting is required. West Des Moines Human Services is seeking volunteers to assist with English Language Learner (ELL) classes for adult learners on Tuesday and/or Thursday mornings from 10 am to noon. Knowledge of a second language is not necessary to volunteer. Some teaching experience is preferred, but not required. We are especially in need of volunteers who are willing to lead a class if the teacher is absent.  Fall class session runs from Sept 9th through November 19th. The Meals on Wheels Hydroponic Farm is a 3,000 square foot indoor farm capable of producing 20,000 pounds of leafy greens a year. Our farm provides some of our most at risk populations in the metro a source of fresh, healthy greens year-round. We also provide greens to other WesleyLife and local communities.

Every weekday, Wesley Life Meals on Wheels prepares and delivers nearly 2,000 hot, nutritious lunches to homebound older adults, veterans, and people living with disabilities. Our volunteers support this mission by delivering meals directly to those in need, while taking a moment to check in with our participants to make sure they are safe and well.    

In 2025, WesleyLife Meals on Wheels delivered 416,764 hot meals to older adults, veterans, and people living with physical and mental disabilities. We know that 91% of our clients report eating healthier, and 94% of our clients are able to stay independent in their own homes thanks in part to Meals on Wheels.

Counselors also assist their sponsor site to create awareness of SHIIP-SMP services in the county; for example, discussions with partners or group presentations.

Overview

The Lakin Foundation Child Development Center at EM relies on dedicated volunteers to help create a nurturing, healthy environment for young children. The Kitchen Volunteer plays a key role in supporting the center’s mission by assisting with the preparation and delivery of nutritious meals and snacks that fuel children’s learning and growth.

Key Responsibilities

The Bloom Senior Center in Glenwood, Iowa provides a friendly place for community members to socialize, share a meal and connect with friends.  Bloom Senior Center volunteers are like family and are important to the day-to-day function of the Bloom Senior Center.

Volunteer Position Descriptions: 

Nutrition Support:

·      Open Bloom Senior Center M-F, make coffee/beverages, check with delivery person for home delivered meals to ensure everything is ready, check delivery sheet, contact Connections Area Agency on Aging if something is missing for the day’s meals both homebound and congregate, take temps of food, turn on dishwasher, sanitizer, take temperature strips/record, 10:45 am get homebound meals ready; 11:00 am/set up tables according to count for congregate meals, serve clients lunch and clean-up.

·      Check on client if signed up for congregate meal and didn’t attend.

·      Distribute menu calendars.

·      Take reservations for meals for next day by 9:30 a.m.; notify Connections Area Agency on Aging of meal count.

·      Socialization during mealtimes.

Food Pantry:

·      Sunday evening volunteer picks up unsold, donated Panera Bread (Council Bluffs) bread, bagels, and baked goods through Day-End Dough-Nation program.

·      Monday morning sort donated Panera Bread into packages for community members to pick up from Bloom Senior Center.

·      Once a month volunteer picks up donated food from Intercultural Senior Center, 5545 Center Street, Omaha, Nebraska. Food is bagged by Bloom Senior Center volunteers.  Clients who signed up for a bag come to pick up and volunteers assist in taking bags of food to client’s car.  Reminder calls are made to clients who didn’t pick up bag.

·      Collection box for food donations for Mills County Ministerial Association.

·      Sign up “special/big” meals for holidays.

·      Provide appropriate contacts for family checks when possible signs of elder abuse.

·      Assist with referrals to/from Mills County Public Health.

Reception/Special Events:

·      Answer phones.

·      Inform clients of important topics and events.

·      Set up, work and clean up for special events such as 3rd Saturday morning Breakfasts (free will offering), Root Beer Floats during Farmer’s Market and Garage Sales.  Proceeds benefit all of the activities of Bloom Senior Center.

·      Provide appropriate contacts for family checks when possible signs of elder abuse.

·      Assist with referrals to/from Mills County Public Health.

·      Assist Mills County Public Health once month for blood pressure checks.

·      Attendance at monthly Inservice meetings.

·      Maintenance duties of Bloom Senior Center which include changing filters, taking out trash, pull weeds, spray.

These assignments provide socialization for seniors.  Whether engaging seniors in group activities, learning a new skill, or nutrition, each assignment contributes directly to seniors.

Back of House (BOH) Volunteers support the technical and operational side of theater productions. Their work happens behind the scenes and ensures that performances run safely, efficiently, and professionally. Program Description:  The RSVP Pen Pal Program provides students, typically in grades 3, 4, or 5, an opportunity for building intergenerational relationships while strengthening their social-emotional skills through letter writing with an RSVP volunteer Pen Pal.

·      Attend the Pen Pal Kickoff and Match meeting in the fall.

·      Complete an All About Me profile form to introduce yourself to the student.

·      Write letters to the Pen Pal(s) from September to April/May.

·      Mail each letter to the teacher within a week of receiving the student’s letter. Letters come about once a month.

·      Attend the Pen Pal Meet & Greet party at your student’s school.

Amount of time: Pen Pals usually spend about a half hour to an hour writing each letter.

The Essex Community School District is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to support our innovative MakerSpace program. Volunteers provide hands-on assistance, encouragement, and mentorship as students explore new skills, hobbies, trades, and creative interests.

At Essex Community School District, MakerSpace is more than a traditional makerspace—it is an opportunity for students to discover lifelong hobbies, trades, skills, and passions through authentic, hands-on learning experiences. The Turnbull Child Development Center provides nurturing, high quality early childhood development and care.

This volunteer position ROCKS! RSVP Infant Companions spend special time with infants by rocking, reading and interacting one-on-one. 

The infant room is fully staffed with dedicated teachers who supervise and take care of all the basic needs (read: they change the diapers). The volunteer’s role is to supplement that care by spreading a little extra joy through their interactions with the infants.

Studies show that positive, one-on-one social interaction contributes to infant brain, physical and language development and helps them build trust and confidence. You are a part of that healthy development! (and it’s good for YOU, too)

Duties:

●      Interact with infants by rocking, reading and talking with them

●      Practice safe sleep methods by placing infants on their backs to sleep

Program description:  The Restored Depot and WWII Veteran’s Museum offers two volunteer opportunities including greeting museum visitors and helping them to enjoy the museum to the fullest; Flower Garden Assistant during Spring/Summer/Fall - assisting with weeding and care of outdoor flower beds.  Training is available to help you be better informed about the Depot and the Museum so that you can provide visitors with an educational experience.  Depending on volunteers’ area of interest help is needed with database input for collections, research for local history or artifacts, assisting with exhibits – research, labeling, arranging, etc.  There are also opportunities to assist with special events.

Produce is shared with West Central Community Action for community food boxes.  With your help, we can make a positive difference in the health of area residents.

SHIIP-SMP trained and certified volunteers assist thousands of Iowans each year to understand their Medicare benefits/options and fight Medicare fraud and abuse. SHIIP-SMP volunteers offer individual counseling sessions, community education, and special projects. Local community organizations partner with SHIIP-SMP to host trained volunteers at sponsor sites across Iowa. Volunteer Office Assistants play a critical role in provision of services.

Key responsibilities for this role may include: • Assisting with creation of new www.Medicare.gov accounts. • Entering prescription drugs from clients into Plan Finder on www.Medicare.gov, including calling the client or pharmacy to verify accuracy of the drug list. • Assisting with copying, mailing and other site office assistance. • Screening client calls for service and/or scheduling counseling appointments.

The RSVP Childcare Classroom Helper:   Your job requires you to bring your listening ears, your patience, your love for children and lots of smiles as you help children and teachers in their daycare and learning journey. Program description: Education provides critical skills for life. To help students achieve their full potential, the Lakin Child Development Center is seeking volunteers to aid in classroom activities, assisting children ages 1-12 and their teachers with playtime and other classroom activities. The Lakin Foundation Child Development Center at EM provides nurturing, high quality early childhood development and care.  This volunteer position ROCKS! RSVP Infant Companions spend special time with infants by rocking, reading and interacting one-on-one. 

The infant room is fully staffed with dedicated teachers who supervise and take care of all the basic needs (read: they change the diapers). The volunteer’s role is to supplement that care by spreading a little extra joy through their interactions with the infants.

Studies show that positive, one-on-one social interaction contributes to infant brain, physical and language development and helps them build trust and confidence. You are a part of that healthy development! (and it’s good for YOU, too)

Duties:

●      Interact with infants by rocking, reading and talking with them

On September 11, TRAIL will join thousands of Americans in honoring the National Day of Service and Remembrance by helping older adults throughout Johnson County remain safe, independent, and connected to their communities.

From 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, teams of volunteers will complete yard and garden projects at the homes of TRAIL members who need an extra hand. Whether it's weeding flower beds, trimming shrubs, spreading mulch, raking, or tackling other seasonal outdoor tasks, every project helps create a safer and more welcoming home environment for our members.

This special afternoon of service is an opportunity to remember the spirit of unity and compassion that emerged after September 11 by putting those values into action right here in our own community.

No special gardening expertise is required—just a willingness to serve and work alongside fellow volunteers. Individuals, families, friends, neighborhood groups, civic organizations, faith communities, and workplace teams are all encouraged to participate.

In just two hours, volunteers can make a lasting difference. For many TRAIL members, outdoor maintenance has become physically difficult or impossible. A couple of hours of volunteer service not only improves the appearance and safety of a home but also provides reassurance that someone cares.

Firefly sends out a monthly mailing to everyone newly eligible for Medicaid insurance coverage.  These mailings need to be prepared and stuffed, so some folks with quick fingers and agile wrists would be the perfect fit to get those envelopes ready to mail.  When those we serve receive their mailing, they are filled with resources to connect them to supports they need, as well as information on ensuring their family has a medical and dental home.  These supports help keep families healthy and out of the costly hospital and ER.

We are looking for someone who is familiar with the Council Bluffs community and has either owned a business locally or has experience in early childhood services, supporting families experiencing poverty, or another related field. We are hoping to find someone who is passionate about strengthening our community and supporting young children and families.

This is a one-year commitment. Policy Council meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month via Zoom from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

During this year’s Black Maternal Health Week in April, IBBG collaborated with Douglas County Health Department and A Mother’s Love to collect wipe and diaper donations in preparation for our upcoming Annual Baby Shower this October.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Omaha Community and Catholic Charities St. Martin de Porres, the drive successfully brought in 81 packages of wipes and over 6,000 diapers! Now, we are ready to sort and prepare these donations for the Annual Black Maternal Health Month Community Baby Shower!

We are looking for 25 - 30 volunteers on September 11th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at IBBG’s Anarcha Center - 2306 N. 24th St. 68110 - to help sort, organize, and package the diapers and wipes. Your support will be critical in helping IBBG prepare for this Annual Community Baby Shower, which celebrates and assists recently delivered and expectant mothers throughout the Omaha Community, while uplifting Black Maternal Health.

Our after-school and summer academic programs for students in grades K-5 help build character, promote healthy exercise options, and provide student-driven educational enrichment opportunities to help students become well-rounded. The academic enrichment opportunities may include but are not limited to the following areas: art, culture, science, technology, logic, movement, sports, and outdoor activities.

 Volunteers can volunteer for 1.5 to 2 hours, one to five days a week. Engaging and connecting with the students is the volunteers' primary role! :)

Convivium Urban Farmstead grows food on over 7000 square feet of garden space. Some of the food is handed out as ingredients in our weekly free casserole program. And some of the food is picked by the general public as free, accessible, healthy produce.

Garden Tenders keep Convivium’s gardens healthy, thriving, and productive. Story County 4-H is seeking volunteer club leaders to help guide youth through an exciting FIRST® LEGO® League experience. Volunteer leaders will partner with 4-H staff to provide positive youth development opportunities through hands-on STEM learning, robotics, teamwork, and problem-solving.

As a 4-H FIRST® LEGO® League Volunteer Club Leader, you will work directly with youth in either the Explore level (grades 2–3) or Challenge level (grades 4–8). Leaders will work alongside another FLL volunteer and Story County Extension staff to plan, facilitate, and support a successful season.

Extension staff members will help connect leaders with information and help with information on the 4-H and extension side, but will not run meetings unless they volunteer as a club leader.

Volunteer Club Leaders will:

FIRST® LEGO® League Explore (Grades 2–3)

FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge (Grades 4–8)

Volunteers must:

Volunteer leaders will need access to a meeting space that can accommodate a 4-foot x 8-foot FIRST® LEGO® League table during the season. Ideally, the table can remain assembled throughout the competition period.

Story County FLL teams typically meet once per week for approximately 1–1.5 hours during the competition season.

There is no cost to serve as a volunteer club leader. Story County Extension will provide curriculum, resources, LEGO® materials, program guidance, and ongoing support throughout the season.

Experience with STEM, robotics, LEGO® building, or working with youth is encouraged but not required. We are looking for volunteers who are excited to help youth learn, create, and grow through FIRST® LEGO® League and 4-H.

Opportunity: Clean and organize the Mobile Wellness Unit
Volunteers: 3-4
Description: Our Mobile Wellness Unit (MWU) is a converted toy hauler that serves as a mobile dental office and
community outreach space. After a busy season traveling to schools and community events, it could use a
thorough cleaning, sanitizing, and organizing so it's ready for its next "road trip."
Opportunity: Clean and vacuum our two fleet SUVs
Volunteers: 4-6
Description: Help give our two mid-size SUVs a refresh! These vehicles are used daily by our Parent Educators and
Public Health team for home visits and community outreach. A good wash and interior vacuuming will help keep
them looking their best.
Opportunity: Clean and sanitize furniture and toys in the childcare room
Volunteers: 6-8
Description: This space is used for family visits, community socialization events, trainings, and childcare.
Volunteers will clean and sanitize toys, furniture, and high-touch surfaces, helping create a healthy, welcoming
environment for children and families - especially as cold and flu season approaches.
Opportunity: Assemble Trunk or Treat projects (such as Toothbrush Ghosts)
Volunteers: 10-15
Description: A fun, hands-on project! Volunteers will create our popular "Toothbrush Ghosts" by transforming
toothbrushes into adorable Halloween giveaways using tissues and markers. These are distributed to children
throughout the community during Trunk or Treat events.
Opportunity: Prepare monthly mailers for our Family Support and Public Health programs
Volunteers: 10-15
Description: Each month we send hundreds of resource packets to families. Volunteers will fold materials, stuff
envelopes, seal mailers, and help prepare these important communications for mailing.
Opportunity: Assemble wellness kits
Volunteers: 15-20
Description: Volunteers will assemble wellness kits based on current program needs. One example is our
toothbrush kits, which include items such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and a brushing timer for children
participating in our I-Smile @ School Program.
Opportunity: Put together packets for our upcoming Fall Flannel Fling fundraiser
Volunteers: 4-6
Description: While planning is still underway, we anticipate needing assistance assembling packets, organizing
supplies, and preparing materials for our annual fall fundraising event.
Opportunity: Campus trash pickup
Volunteers: 15-20
Description: Help keep the beautiful Lakin Campus looking its best! Volunteers will walk the campus and
surrounding areas collecting litter and helping maintain a clean, welcoming environment for everyone who visits.
Opportunity: Support the launch of our new Thrive Iowa program
Volunteers: 4-6
Description: As we continue launching this exciting new initiative, additional project needs may arise. While we
don't yet know exactly what those tasks will be, we anticipate having meaningful opportunities for volunteers to
assist with organizing materials, preparing resources, or other startup activities.

provide valuable support. We are happy to adjust and identify opportunities that best align with current needs and
ensure volunteers have a meaningful way to contribute

Some assist with stocking inventory in multiple locations on campus. Our campus supports individuals that are experiencing some form of homelessness.

Drivers Needed!!!

To assist with transporting middle school students to Job's financial literacy lessons during the school year.

Volunteers are needed to do one or all of these:

Pick up students at their middle school (in Waterloo) and transport them to the lesson site (in Waterloo),

And/or drive student's home after the lesson.

Must be available on Wednesday afternoons 2:30pm or 4:30pm, able to pass a comprehensive background test, have a car, car insurance, a valid driver's license and a good driving record.

Become a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Tax Preparer with Iowa Center for Economic Success.

We are looking for volunteers who want to have significant impact in the lives of people in their own community. You can become an IRS trained and certified volunteer tax preparer prior to the beginning of the tax season and then assist taxpayers by accurately preparing their taxes for free. In-person and online training available.

If you enjoy working with numbers and people, this would be a great opportunity for you!

Become a Greeter for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program with Iowa Center for Economic Success.

We are looking for volunteers who want to have significant impact in the lives of people in their own community. If you are a friendly person, this could be the role for you!

You would be the first person to interact with taxpayers coming to have their tax returns prepared free of charge. Your responsibility would be to greet the clients, make sure they have some basic tax documents, and add them to the list for tax preparation.

We have opportunities at our Iowa Center, United Way, Polk County River Place, Evelyn K. Davis Center, Ankeny and West Des Moines locations.

Cedar Valley JA Career Inspire® is a hands-on, try it for yourself career fair where students get to experience a variety of career fields.

In 2025, the Cedar Valley JA Career Inspire® connected 1,473 students from 15 schools. More than a career fair, JA Career Inspire® is a powerful career-connected learning experience that unites business, education, and community partners to prepare students not just to navigate the future—but to shape it.

We are looking for two types of volunteers: 

-Type 1: Organizations or Individuals representing their organizations to host a booth providing a hands-on activity for students to try. You will be talking to students about your career, education background and day-to-day responsibilities. 

-Type 2: Individuals looking to volunteer to assist in facilitating transitions for students and other event needs.

Junior Achievement is a nonprofit that partners a community volunteer with a local classroom to lead short games and discussions focused on work readiness, entrepreneurship and/or financial literacy.  It is a short time commitment as you just visit your partnered classroom a total of 5-7 times, usually once  a week for 5-7 weeks. Each visit is about 30-45 minutes long.  Every resource you need to lead the activities is provided to you in a kit, that includes all necessary materials. At Meals from the Heartland, that same spirit of service is at the heart of our mission. Every meal packaged by volunteers is an act of compassion, providing nourishment to families facing food insecurity and communities recovering from disasters and times of crisis.

National Nonprofit Day: Celebrating the Power of Service

Join Meals from the Heartland and fellow nonprofit organizations for a special National Nonprofit Day packaging event at the Patty Cownie Packaging Center. This gathering brings together nonprofit leaders, volunteers, and community partners for a shared day of service, connection, and impact.

While our missions may look different, we share a common purpose: caring for people and strengthening our communities. Together, we will assemble nutritious, nonperishable, and culturally adaptable meals that provide nourishment and hope to children and families experiencing food insecurity locally and around the world.

Every meal assembled represents compassion in action. It can support a child ready to learn, provide comfort to families recovering after natural disasters, bring stability to communities facing hardship, and remind people that they are not alone.

This event is more than packing meals. It is an opportunity to lead with heart, serve with purpose, and create meaningful impact alongside organizations dedicated to making a difference.

Held in the week following the 25th anniversary of 9/11 and the National Day of Service, this trail cleanup is how we turn remembrance into action, giving back together, and taking care of the community we share.

Spruce Up CASA

Join us on your own schedule for assistance giving back by helping refresh and maintain the CASA office! We're looking for volunteers to assist with a variety of indoor and outdoor projects that will help keep our workspace safe, functional, and welcoming for the staff, advocates, volunteers, and community partners who help advocate for children every day.

Volunteer projects may include:

Whether you're handy with tools or simply willing to lend a hand, there's a project for everyone. We'll provide the necessary supplies, equipment, and instructions.   Please wear comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting dirty or paint on, along with closed-toe shoes.

By volunteering, you'll help ensure CASA has a clean, well-maintained, and functional workspace where staff and volunteers can focus on what matters most—advocating for children who have been impacted by child abuse and/or neglect.

At  Kids Can Community Center, our mission is to educate, engage, and inspire children through early childhood care and out-of-school experiences. Founded in 1908 as the Social Settlement Association of Omaha, we changed our name to Kids Can Community Center to better reflect our vision for children and families in our community.  Today we are a state-licensed childcare provider for children ages 6 weeks to 13-years old, offering full-day early childhood education. As an early childhood reader you'll have the opportunity to read in one of our brand-new preschool classrooms!
