The Vigil Volunteer offers companionship, comfort and presence to patients during the time immediately prior to their death. Support can be provided to patients who have no family to be with them or to provide support and guidance to families and caregivers, helping to relieve the unknown; this may also include staff if the patient resides at a facility. Support is provided in a variety of ways, including being a calm presence, talking and listening to the family/ caregivers, or sharing silence.

Bereavement care is one of the services that make hospice services unique and aims to enhance the patient’s/family’s dignity and quality of life. Medicare regulations require every hospice to include an organized bereavement program that provides services for at least twelve (12) months after the patient’s death.  Kindred at Home and hospice affiliates provides bereavement support for thirteen (13) months after the patient has died. If a family member, friend or caregiver requires additional support beyond the thirteen months, our Bereavement Coordinators and team will work to provide the appropriate support and resources.  A qualified Bereavement Coordinator provides oversight and supervision of the bereavement program.  The Bereavement Hospice volunteer can help with sending letters to bereaved and calling Bereaved as well.

Avalon Hospice is looking for a Veteran Hospice Volunteer that is willing to make a difference in the lives of other Veterans.  Veteran volunteers are a very valuable part of our care team and at Avalon Hospice we are developing a We Honor Veteran program which would have Veteran-to-Veteran volunteer programs.  The Veteran volunteer program would also make an effor to replace lost medals and awards and would provide emotional support and bereavement counseling. Avalon Hospice supports the volunteers and appreciates the important role they place in hospice care.  We prepare volunteers with specific training and it takes no advanced medical training or great commitment. Avalon Hospice is looking for direct care or administrative hospice volunteers that are looking to make a difference in the lives of others.  Avalon Hospice supports volunteers and appreciates the important role they play in hospice care.  We also prepare volunteers with specific training and takes no advanced medical training or great commitment. All hospice volunteers are given assigments that best suite their time, skills, and interests. The volunteer coordinator will help you discover the best fit for you based on your interests. The Direct Care Volunteer serves as an additional support to patients and families dealing with a terminal illness and end-of-life issues. Support is provided in a variety of ways, including the provision of companionship and socialization to patients, or offering respite to stressed caregivers. Direct Care Volunteers may also make tuck in calls to patients and families. All care provided by the Direct Care Volunteer is outlined in the Volunteer Care Plan and agreed upon by the Interdisciplinary Group (IDG).

The volunteer bookkeeper/accountant primarily serves as an advisor and auditor (not data entry) of the regular accounting of VolunteerSiouxland, including reviewing and advising on QuickBooks setup, financial record keeping and transactions, including accounts payable, receivable and general ledger.  The ideal volunteer with have advanced experience with QuickBooks and some experience working with nonprofits.

COMMITMENT:

Approximately 4-6 hours per month on average.  Days/times extremely flexible and much can probably be done remotely.

Accurate financial records is essential for VolunteerSiouxland to pursue its mission.  By helping keep accurate records an provide accurate reports essential for funding and daily operation, the volunteer will enable VolunteerSiouxland to continue serve hundred of organizations and thousands of volunteers.

We have established a Tuesday through Thursday schedule and we’re asking all volunteers to call in advance so we can schedule them as needed as well as allow us to limit the number coming into the building at any one time.   

We will have two shifts each day:  10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  and   1:00 p.m. to 3:00 pm.

PLEASE NOTE:  Please only volunteer if you are feeling healthy, have not been ill in the past 7 days, are not exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19 (cough, fever, etc.), have not traveled outside of the United States in the past 14 days or come in contact with a sick person in the past 14 days, and have been practicing social distancing.

We have a Sudanese American married couple who are in need of whom we are sponsoring. Their names are Pastor James and Nyandit Puotyal. He is a Lutheran pastor who is undergoing Dialysis three times a week at Methodist Hospital. They live in the Basement of Nyandit's cousin. They only own a bed to sleep on. Nyandit works at Hormel in Nevada. Pastor James began working at Mosaic Ministries and can no longer work. Nyandit's cousin's wife wants them to move out as soon as possible. We have a possible apartment in Altonna, a income restricted one. They need furniture, etc.

This is open to any veteran of Jefferson County, age 55+, who would like to connect with youth and share their military experiences to help better acquaint youth with what such service entails.  It will deepen their understanding while providing an inter-generational contact.  (While younger veterans may participate, they would not be "on board" as   RSVP volunteers.)  Connections as to where to give presentations are in the planning stage with the Scouting movement as well as Iowa State Extension youth programs.  This program will resume when corona virus restrictions have been lifted.

This opportunity could involve working on a puzzle in the library, listening to music while visiting with participants or playing a card game. Food/care packages for youth:

Due to Covid-19, we are unable to hold weekly groups where youth were provided at least one meal and at times food to take home. More concerning is the fact youth aren’t attending school where they were getting the majority of their nutrition. Many of the youth we serve are at risk of not having their daily food needs met and this is an especially challenging time for them. Our goal is to drop off bi-weekly food baskets/care packages for the most needy youth in our programs. 

Specific needs: The Program is seeking food donations that would consist of items that could be refrigerated, frozen, or that have preservatives. Ensuring that youth have food for several days. Overall, anything will help and is appreciated.

Note: In order to follow government safety protocols for Covid-19, we will work with each donor on a drop off site that they will be able to safely drop the donation without having any contact with anyone. Once they leave; we will have a team member get the food and distribute it accordingly.

We work with Milestones Area Agency on Aging to deliver meals to homebound seniors, Monday through Friday. Most volunteers commit to volunteering one day a week, time commitment is about 1 hour each time. 

international Experience (iE), with US Department of State support, is planning to welcome exchange students to the US for the 2020-21 school year.  We continue to monitor recommendations from the CDC, WHO and Department of State, and will adjust our program as necessary, always acting with student and host family health in mind.  Reaching out for more info or even registering on our website does NOT obligate you to host if your family should reconsider later this summer.

So now that all of my disclaimers are out of the way... let's jump in to what we're looking for! 

A volunteer host family fills the place of a parent during a student's exchange year/semester abroad.  We're looking for families/adults/empty nesters/single adults/parents with toddlers/parents with teens (there are LOTS of types of families!) who will provide a safe & caring home environment, basic room & board (3 meals/day and a permanent bed - can share a room with a host sibling of the same gender within 3 years of age), and reasonable transportation (to & from team practices, rides to the mall, pick-ups from a friend's house, etc).

We have a vetting process for host families to ensure the safety of all - including an online application (www.ie-usa.org), a criminal background check (for any family member 18+ living at home full time) and in-home interview.  We also call references as provided in the application.  Students go through a similar vetting process, and also need teacher's recommendations and a English proficiency exam.  iE requires a minimum English language score in order to gain admittance into the program.

Students come with a willingness and openness to learn - about a new culture, a new high school, a new family, a new city/state - and also to share about their country and way of life.  Host families can gain a relationship that can truly last a lifetime.

Ankeny Dollars for Scholars is an all-volunteer organization that provides scholarships to graduating students of Ankeny Community School District.  The 2020 - 2021 school year marks the organization's 38th year!  ADFS is a clearing house for donations from generous individuals, businesses, organizations; all donations are used to fund scholarships -- 100% of every donation goes to scholarships.  With over $1 million in scholarships awarded to date, volunteers fundraise to cover all administrative costs, facilitate the application and matching process, work with donors and potential donors, fundraise to add to scholarship donation monies, promote post-secondary training and education, and more.  

The organization welcomes potential volunteers to consider attending a meeting to learn more about the committees that make ADFS successful.  Committees include Fundraising/Finance, Marketing/Communications, and Scholarships.  Each committee meets either monthly or bi-monthly for approximately one hour at a time; at certain times of the year, depending on activities, more or less time is helpful.

America’s blood centers need donors #NowMoreThanEver. The COVID-19 pandemic is devastating our blood supply: blood drives have been canceled and donors are afraid to visit centers. The American Red Cross has recommended hospitals reduce blood product utilization by 25%. This is a deadly shortage that affects millions, including anemic, transplant, cancer, surgery, sickle cell, trauma, and pregnant patients. There is no alternative for blood.

In response, we have launched our COVID Code Red campaign to support blood centers and the healthcare system. The goal of this campaign is to start a social movement to bring greater awareness and rally young people nationwide to advocate for their local centers. UBI leadership would provide support to those volunteers or Code Red Responders. Responders have the opportunity to make a substantial impact on the health of their community and give back during this hard time.

Food Bank of Iowa is in search of volunteers to sew donated T-Shirts into tote bags using the instructions we provide. These bags are used at mobile pantries to provide a safe drive-thru model that serves families in need.

The Department of Human Services is currently in need of volunteers to serve as conservators for wards of the state. Wards of the state are typically individuals with mental illness, disabilities, or dementia. Often, family members of the ward are not able to serve as conservator, and we look to caring community members for help.

This is a rewarding position for those who enjoy using their skills with accounting, real estate, taxes, etc. Conservators work with professionals from DHS and other services agencies to handle matters such as paying bills, settling outstanding debts, selling, leasing, mortgaging property, investing funds or filing taxes for wards who may be moving to a nursing facility, or perhaps a young person who is unable to make good decisions on his or her own. Conservators also make a brief yearly report to the court. Complex decisions may require the approval of a Judge.  Conservators make a big difference for some of our community's most needy individuals!

Help people in your local community by volunteering as a guardian!

The Department of Human Services is currently in need of volunteers to serve as guardians for wards of the state. Wards of the state are typically individuals with mental illness, disabilities, or dementia. Often, family members of the ward are not able to serve as guardian, and we look to caring community members for help.

Guardians work with professionals from DHS and other services agencies to make placement and treatment decisions for the ward. Thus, a guardian may be asked to sign admission requests for hospitals, complete applications for government assistance, and monitor the ward's treatment and condition.  Guardians also make a brief yearly report to the court.  If additional court involvement is necessary, the county attorney's office can help file the necessary paperwork.  Guardians make a big difference for some of our community's most needy individuals!

We are looking for 2-3 people who are willing to complete grant applications. The grants will be found by other persons. The company name or government agency will be provided along with the application start and due date. We will also provide substantial general and financial information that the person needs to complete the application. This person will have phone, text and email access to other people who can provide additional information the grant writer feels they need. This type of work can be done from anywhere a computer can be used.  

We realize that finding grants and completing the applications are two time consuming processes. Thus, we would like to have multiple people doing both of these tasks. Our vision is to have 2 volunteers working in conjunction with each other:

1. One person would research the availability and timing of government available grant for projects similar to those of Operation Empower..

2. A second person would research the availability and timing of corporation grants that support projects similar to those of Operation Empower.

Counselors provide free tax assistance and preparation services to low and middle income taxpayers.

Volunteer Tax Counselors are needed for a minimum of 8-12 hours per week from February 1 through April 16.   Classroom and online training is provided from November 20 through January 20.

Volunteers must have good computer skills and enjoy working with people. We provide training on tax preparation, but volunteers must have strong computer skills at the beginning. Counselors must also pass an annual certification exam to be certified by the IRS in order to provide tax assistance in this program.

The Client Facilitator performs receptionist-type duties providing an important first contact for taxpayers using the Tax-Aide free tax preparation service, and helping to keep the service orderly and efficient.

Volunteer Client Facilitators are needed for a minimum of 6-7 hours per week from February 1 through April 16 plus an additional 2-4 hours of training and self-study in January.

This is a critical service for senior citizens in our community and solely volunteer run.  Training is provided by knowledgeable staff in Des Moines and all training expenses are covered.  Volunteers are encouraged to join now to become trained for Open Enrollment (October-December).  Each year during Open Enrollment the SHIIP office at Finley Hospital is full of appointments and clients are referred to the helpline, with additional counselors we can make sure our community is meeting the needs of all those seeking assistance with Medicare.

Schools across Waterloo and Elk Run are in need of school volunteers! You have the choice of volunteering at a specific school and grade range. If you have no preferences, you will be placed in a school with a need for volunteers.

Activities that teachers need volunteers for include being paired with a teacher to assist with a small group of children, help with filing, projects around the school, assisting a child with reading, helping in the library, etc. 

As a member of a wish team, wish granters meet as a team of 2 with the family and help the wish child determine the wish. They act as a liaison between Make-A-Wish staff and the wish family during the wish process which may last 2 months to a year depending on the wish type, the family dynamic and the child's medical condition. Wish granters must be a minimum of 18 years old.

Help facilitate wish experiences for non-English-speaking families. Translators have the option of becoming fully-trained wish granting volunteers, or they can provide short-term support on an as-needed basis.

The Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program (JYSEP) engages teens and young adults as mentors for their younger peers, ages 11-15. Mentors empower junior youth to develop strong moral reasoning, to resist negative social forces, to express themselves with eloquence, and to work together for a better world.

A global program implemented at the grassroots level, the JYSEP aids junior youth from diverse backgrounds to navigate the transition from childhood to adulthood through spiritual empowerment—nurturing within young people inherent spiritual qualities of kindness, justice, honesty, and generosity. In developing their character at this critical juncture of their lives, they become protagonists of positive change.

Mentors are given training and then assisted to form a group of their own, often with young people from their neighborhood. Both the training and the meeting time of the junior youth group are scheduled according to the volunteer's availability.

Junior Achievement is a nonprofit that partners a community volunteer with a local classroom to lead short games and discussions focused on work readiness, entrepreneurship and/or financial literacy.  It is a short time commitment as you just visit your partnered classroom a total of 5-7 times, usually once  a week for 5-7 weeks. Each visit is about 30-45 minutes long.  Every resource you need to lead the activities is provided to you in a kit, that includes worksheets and stickers and fun stuff the students love

Activity setup starts around 2pm and bingo game and clean up lasts until about 3:30pm. The West Des Moines Historical Society is seeking energetic and detail oriented volunteers to help with a new project- a master inventory of the Jordan House and Bennett School Museums. Both museums house collections of artifacts dating back to the early days of the State, and we are launching a huge project to ensure the protection and preservation of all the items. 

The volunteer opportunity would require you to take an inventory of each room and compare this inventory to existing paper records. Each object in the room will be cataloged, inspected and a detailed form filled out for the purpose of entering into a computerized database. Each item will be photographed for identification purposes. 

Volunteer requirements: 

Volunteers are needed on an ongoing basis to serve as Blue Zones Project advocates at community events, health fair events, and worksite events. Participants will provide updated Blue Zones Project information, assist with education, and answer questions. These events occur during various days and times of the week all year long. Volunteers can sign up for one event or multiple events. Training will be provided to volunteers to prepare them for the various events.

Central Iowa Chapter of Project Linus is in need of individuals who are willing to pick up blankets from designated pick up points, perform quality control checks on each blanket to ensure it meets PL standards, and affix a PL label. Once the Blankets are completed with the quality check and label, they are able to be transported to one of the designated drop off sites as directed by the local coordinator. The Blanketeer overseeing Quality and Label additions will also need to provide monthly updates to the local coordinator as to the number of blankets picked up per location and the number donated per drop off site. 

Make a blanket and share it with a child in need by donating it to Central Iowa Project Linus. Milestones Area Agency on Aging has routes available in Ottumwa and surrounding communities. Volunteers are needed to deliver meals to home-bound seniors Monday through Friday between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Make an older adults day by delivering them a hot, nutritious meal! Volunteers need to be trustworthy. Good communication skills are necessary.  The volunteer should be detail oriented and able to work in a noisy environment. Computer skills are a plus for data entry. 

Needed weekdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Overview

This volunteer (unpaid) position reports to the Museum Educator. Docents (tour guides) lead groups on engaging tours through the museum’s exhibits and present educational workshops on topics ranging from music to George Washington Carver to the Underground Railroad. Docents help teach student and adult groups invaluable lessons about African American history, inclusion, and diversity.  

Qualifications

Volunteer docents should have an energetic, engaging personality and be comfortable speaking to audiences of all ages. Experience in a formal or informal education setting is advantageous, but not required. The ideal volunteer should be dependable and creative, have an enthusiastic personality, a positive attitude, and an interest in the Museum’s mission to preserve, exhibit, and teach the African American history of Iowa. Tour scripts, workshop materials, and training are provided by the Museum’s education staff. Business casual dress is required.

 Responsibilities

Time Commitment

Available hours are Monday to Saturday, between 9am and 4pm. Docent scheduling is flexible and based on scheduled tours. Tours are scheduled through the education department at least seven days in advance. Each shift requires a 1.5 to 3-hour commitment.

Overview

This volunteer (unpaid) position reports to the Operations Coordinator. Front Desk Attendants create a welcoming, professional environment, helping ensure all Museum visitors have a positive experience.

Qualifications

Friendly, professional demeanor. Customer service and/or cash register experience is advantageous, but not required. The ideal volunteer should be dependable and organized, have an enthusiastic personality, a positive attitude, and an interest in the Museum’s mission to preserve, exhibit, and teach the African American history of Iowa. Training is provided on-site. Business casual dress is required.

Available hours are Monday to Friday, 9:45am to 4:15pm. Preference is for volunteers willing to commit to a 3.25 hour shift (9:45am-1pm or 1pm-4:15pm) one day per week, for a minimum of six months.

DESCRIPTION Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Receptionist will be responsible for supporting various administrative projects and day-to-day duties for the organization. Such responsibilities include greeting visitors, answering all incoming calls and refer calls to appropriate staff members. The Receptionist must demonstrate a commitment to serving Women Aware’s clients and to upholding the Women Aware mission- "Transforming the emotional and economic future of people in transition through advocacy, education, information and referral".

REQUIREMENTS 1. Experience in Microsoft Office user including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook. 2. Excellent verbal and written communication. 3. Experience with handling phone calls, email correspondence. Excellent customer service skills. 4. Knowledge of working with multicultural communities and women’s rights issues 6. Excellent interpersonal skills, honest communication, positive attitude and ability to carry a professional tone.
