The Cherokee Washington High School is looking for individuals and businesses to greet students on Friday mornings from 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM.  If you love students and your community, please consider this opportunity!

The Cherokee Elementary School is looking for guest readers.  Guest readers can create their own schedules and pick their own grade levels (PK-4).  The library has a fantastic supply, so don't worry about materials.  Please join us if you have time to donate and love children!

The Cherokee Middle School is looking for volunteers to help with a relatively new program called the Braves Mentoring Program.  A Braves Mentor is someone who sets a positive example for a young person by providing support, friendship and encouragement.  This will be a school-based program and mentors are asked to commit one hour per week during the school day, during the months school is in session.  Please read the Braves Mentoring Pamphlet for more information.

During our garden season (April through October), we are in need of volunteers to help us with upkeep and maintenance of our 1.5 acre community garden. Activities may include watering, planting, weeding, etc. All are welcome!

Counselors provide free tax assistance and preparation services to low and middle income taxpayers.

Volunteer Tax Counselors are needed for a minimum of 8-12 hours per week from February 1 through April 16.   Classroom and online training is provided from November 20 through January 20.

Shifts are available (Monday through Friday) from February 1 to April 15. Volunteers must be available a minimum of 8-12 hours per week:

Volunteers must have good computer skills and enjoy working with people. We provide training on tax preparation, but volunteers must have strong computer skills at the beginning. Counselors must also pass an annual certification exam to be certified by the IRS in order to provide tax assistance in this program.

The Client Facilitator performs receptionist-type duties providing an important first contact for taxpayers using the Tax-Aide free tax preparation service, and helping to keep the service orderly and efficient.

Volunteer Client Facilitators are needed for a minimum of 6-7 hours per week from February 1 through April 16 plus an additional 2-4 hours of training and self-study in January.

Shifts are available (Monday through Thursday) from February 1 to April 16. Volunteers must have a minimum of 6-7 hours per week:

Client Facilitators must be organized, personable, and enjoy working with people. They must also pass an annual IRS certification exam on Standards of Conduct and Intake/Interview forms in order to volunteer in this program.

The Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) sponsored by UnityPoint Health-Finley Hospital is seeking dedicated volunteers to join as counselors.  SHIIP counselors help with questions regarding Medicare, Medicare supplements, Medicare claims processing, Medicare Advantage, Medicare prescription drug plans and long term care insurance. This is a critical service for senior citizens in our community and solely volunteer run.  Training is provided by knowledgeable staff in Des Moines and all training expenses are covered.  Volunteers are encouraged to join now to become trained for Open Enrollment (October-December).  Each year during Open Enrollment the SHIIP office at Finley Hospital is full of appointments and clients are referred to the helpline, with additional counselors we can make sure our community is meeting the needs of all those seeking assistance with Medicare.

Patients who are staying on this unit are undergoing physical, occupational, and speech therapy during their stay.

Food Sorting: Food Bank of Iowa receives donations of food items that need labeled, counted and boxed. We need volunteers to make this possible and opportunities are scheduled in advance before we know what the food items may be when they arrive. Help us accept more food and feed the 175,000 Iowans we serve!

Examples: Packing BackPack sacks, checking dates and food safety of food drive items, bagging bulk produce, putting bulk rice or pasta into family sized bags, boxing up like items into equally weighted boxes, and more!

Schools across Waterloo and Elk Run are in need of school volunteers! You have the choice of volunteering at a specific school and grade range. If you have no preferences, you will be placed in a school with a need for volunteers.

Activities that teachers need volunteers for include being paired with a teacher to assist with a small group of children, help with filing, projects around the school, assisting a child with reading, helping in the library, etc. 

As a member of a wish team, wish granters meet as a team of 2 with the family and help the wish child determine the wish. They act as a liaison between Make-A-Wish staff and the wish family during the wish process which may last 2 months to a year depending on the wish type, the family dynamic and the child's medical condition. Wish granters must be a minimum of 18 years old.

Help facilitate wish experiences for non-English-speaking families. Translators have the option of becoming fully-trained wish granting volunteers, or they can provide short-term support on an as-needed basis.

Looking for a person or persons that would do a weekly cleaning at the clinic.

This would include vacuuming, dusting, gathering trash, wiping down the bathrooms, etc. 

The hours and day of the week are somewhat flexible.  The best days would be Wednesdays after 2 pm and Fridays between 9-1.  

The Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program (JYSEP) engages teens and young adults as mentors for their younger peers, ages 11-15. Mentors empower junior youth to develop strong moral reasoning, to resist negative social forces, to express themselves with eloquence, and to work together for a better world.

A global program implemented at the grassroots level, the JYSEP aids junior youth from diverse backgrounds to navigate the transition from childhood to adulthood through spiritual empowerment—nurturing within young people inherent spiritual qualities of kindness, justice, honesty, and generosity. In developing their character at this critical juncture of their lives, they become protagonists of positive change.

Mentors are given training and then assisted to form a group of their own, often with young people from their neighborhood. Both the training and the meeting time of the junior youth group are scheduled according to the volunteer's availability.

Junior Achievement is a nonprofit that partners a community volunteer with a local classroom to lead short games and discussions focused on work readiness, entrepreneurship and/or financial literacy.  It is a short time commitment as you just visit your partnered classroom a total of 5-7 times, usually once  a week for 5-7 weeks. Each visit is about 30-45 minutes long.  Every resource you need to lead the activities is provided to you in a kit, that includes worksheets and stickers and fun stuff the students love

Attend doctor visits in the Cedar Valley with a resident who is not able to go on their own.  Appointments vary.  Ride in the Dolly's van with the resident at no cost to you.

Attendants in Mary's Closet will stock clothing racks, keep the room looking neat & orderly, monitor clients visiting and assist clients with picking out items for themselves and their children.

Help 4-H club members grow and reach their fullest potential by supporting them to conduct meaningful, educational experiences. We provide the appetites; you provide the food and the cooks!

Looking for a group or individual to bring a baked good item in for our monthly men and women social hour. socials are every other Friday each month at 2:30 PM. Volunteers can bring them at any time before 2:30. Cookies, a cake or cupcakes are preferred for the socials. 

Would you like to help call bingo on Saturday afternoons (2:30 pm)? We are looking for extra support with our Bingo activity. You would need a loud clear voice for helping to call numbers, patience with residents who miss hear or call single bingo for a black out bingo. Basic understanding bingo is a plus but not needed. Activity setup starts around 2pm and bingo game and clean up lasts until about 3:30pm. Consistent volunteers will be asked to complete an in house background check and TB testing as well as a little orientation training.

The West Des Moines Historical Society is seeking energetic and detail oriented volunteers to help with a new project- a master inventory of the Jordan House and Bennett School Museums. Both museums house collections of artifacts dating back to the early days of the State, and we are launching a huge project to ensure the protection and preservation of all the items. 

The volunteer opportunity would require you to take an inventory of each room and compare this inventory to existing paper records. Each object in the room will be cataloged, inspected and a detailed form filled out for the purpose of entering into a computerized database. Each item will be photographed for identification purposes. 

Volunteer requirements: 

Volunteers are needed on an ongoing basis to serve as Blue Zones Project advocates at community events, health fair events, and worksite events. Participants will provide updated Blue Zones Project information, assist with education, and answer questions. These events occur during various days and times of the week all year long. Volunteers can sign up for one event or multiple events. Training will be provided to volunteers to prepare them for the various events.

Central Iowa Chapter of Project Linus is in need of individuals who are willing to pick up blankets from designated pick up points, perform quality control checks on each blanket to ensure it meets PL standards, and affix a PL label. Once the Blankets are completed with the quality check and label, they are able to be transported to one of the designated drop off sites as directed by the local coordinator. The Blanketeer overseeing Quality and Label additions will also need to provide monthly updates to the local coordinator as to the number of blankets picked up per location and the number donated per drop off site. 

Make a blanket and share it with a child in need by donating it to Central Iowa Project Linus. Your new, handmade, washable blanket or afghan will be given to a child who is seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need. Milestones Area Agency on Aging has routes available in Ottumwa and surrounding communities. Volunteers are needed to deliver meals to home-bound seniors Monday through Friday between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Make an older adults day by delivering them a hot, nutritious meal! You can volunteer to deliver meals once a week, once a month, with a friend, with a group or on your own-whatever works for you.

Overview

This volunteer (unpaid) position reports to the Museum Educator. Docents (tour guides) lead groups on engaging tours through the museum’s exhibits and present educational workshops on topics ranging from music to George Washington Carver to the Underground Railroad. Qualifications

Direct service advocates work directly with survivors of sexual abuse, typically as they're having a sexual assault forensic kit collected or reporting to the police. An advocate is potentially the first person to tell a survivor of sexual abuse, “I believe you” and the first person to affirm, "It's not your fault." In addition to responding to the immediate needs of survivors, advocates learn professional and practical interpersonal skills while gaining valuable experience beneficial within the fields of social work, law, medicine, and psychology, among others. Waypoint is looking for volunteers to provide childcare during weekly support groups for victims of domestic violence. Support groups offer a chance for survivors to connect with others and share their experiences in a safe, supportive space. Support groups are offered in Cedar Rapids on Mondays and in Waterloo on Tuesdays, both from 6:00-8:00 pm.

TIME COMMITMENT:

Court Appointed Special Advocates are trained and qualified community advocates to serve as an effective voice in court for abused and neglected children, strengthening efforts to ensure that each child is living in a safe, permanent and nurturing home.  CASA are required to see the child every 30 days.
