Opportunities From: Volunteer Iowa

Volunteer: Grill Cook

Are you a breakfast chef (or think you could be)? This volunteer position entails cooking bacon & sausage, scrambling eggs, and flipping french toast in large quantities, to order. This job doesn't involve anything super gourmet, but does involve a little stamina and a good attitude, as we can be pretty fast paced on occasion! On the job training is available, so experience in a kitchen would be nice, but not required.    The grill cook position, once trained, would be 6-9am, every other Wednesday. This position would ideally run the whole school year, so keep that in mind if you are interested. This is truly the beating heart of the café, and we are looking for more capable individuals who can do it! This would be a great job for someone that is high energy, enthusiastic, or loves cooking.

Summary:

Right now, millions of Americans face the devastation of Alzheimer’s. This disease is robbing us of our families, our futures and our finances. At the Alzheimer’s Association, our network of more than 75 chapters is working relentlessly to advance world-class research, ensure access to gold-standard care and support, and engage mission-driven volunteers who make it happen.

Support Group Facilitators create a safe, open environment where people share their feelings, thoughts and experiences in a combined effort to better cope with and manage the shared problems of dementia. The goal of Alzheimer's Association support groups is to provide emotional, social and/or educational support to group members. As facilitators, individuals may be responsible for general caregiver, adult children, spouse, gender-specific or language-specific groups.

Key Activities:

Follow expectations and recommendations of the Caregiver Support Group Facilitator Manual, including participation in initial & ongoing training and submission of all required documentation to Chapter. Set up, arrange and prepare the room before and after each group. Coordinate any speakers/presenters with local chapter staff. Encourage participants to provide assistance and emotional support to one another. Present pertinent Association materials and information to group members. Connect members of the community with additional Association services by proactively making referrals to Alzheimer's Association programs & free 24/7 Helpline.

Qualifications:

Ability to be empathic and separate personal needs from group needs. Strong listening and effective communication skills. Ability to redirect and facilitate discussion as well as fulfill the duties and responsibilities as described in the Facilitator Agreement. Ability to create and maintain a safe environment where participants’ thoughts and feelings are valued and group members are treated with fairness, equity and respect. Commitment to promote the mission and services of the Association and willingness to act as an extension of the Association. Experience with dementia as a family member or health care professional preferred.

Commitment Expected:

Support Group Facilitators commit to a 1-year term delivering a monthly group. Terms are renewable upon successful completion of annual goal-setting conversation with your staff partner. Orientation includes: online general volunteer orientation (1 hour) + program volunteer orientation (1 hour) + self-study or in-person role training with staff partner (~4 hours). Support Group facilitators must observe 1 group in the community led by a staff or mentor plus review facilitation skills with a staff partner prior to deployment in the community. Background checks are required as part of the volunteer selection process. Comply with Alzheimer’s Association volunteer policies and procedures. Participate in initial training and ongoing education about Alzheimer’s, dementia and the Alzheimer's Association.

Benefits to the Volunteer:

Volunteer: Adult Members to fulfill various needs within Emergency Services, Aviation, and Cadet Program

Though Civil Air Patrol is known for its flying missions, CAP adults members, known as Senior Members, do so much more than just fly. In fact less than a fifth of all CAP members are pilots or aircrew members. CAP adult members come from all walks of life. Some are doctors, nurses, paramedics, or other medical professionals. Others are lawyers, paralegals, accountants, computer programmers, and other business professionals and executives. Really just about any career or background can be useful to and found in the ranks of the CAP adult membership. CAP supports a variety of missions that require adults from all walks of life.

In emergency services and operations CAP not only need aircrew members, but also ground team members to aid in the rescue of survivors or to assess damage after a disaster. CAP needs communications personnel to relay critical messages when there is limited or no telephone support.  Administrative staff, financial managers, logistics and supply personnel are needed to document missions and get personnel critical supplies and equipment in the field that they need to conduct missions.

CAP also needs adults to support the cadet program. CAP has over 23,000 cadets across the country that need mentors willing to help guide and support them. The cadet program provides young adults between the ages of 12 and 21 a well rounded program of leadership, aerospace education, physical fitness, and moral and ethical decision making. In today’s world we need good people who are willing to step up and help provide a healthy, drug-free environment to develop tomorrow’s leaders. Many former cadets have gone into the military, government jobs, or private sector employment where they can and do make a difference, and really excel. There are many military general officers that were once CAP cadets.  Senators and congressman, CEOs and others credit their success to CAP and the adult members who mentored them.

CAP needs adults for its aerospace education program. In addition to educating our own members, CAP’s adult leaders provide training and resources to teachers who reach out to students of all ages across the country.  Aviation and aerospace impacts the lives of Americans every day, and CAP works to ensure that citizens know how valuable aviation and aerospace is in our world.

Volunteer: Real Climate Action Campaign Volunteer

Mighty Earth is seeking motivated community members to work on an exciting campaign to protect Midwest landscapes and promote a more sustainable future. For years, politicians, BigAg lobbyists, and even environmentalists have promoted biofuels as a sustainable energy source. Unfortunately, research has shown that biofuels are not a greener energy option. In fact, they are adding to greenhouse gas emissions in our atmosphere, destroying wildlife habitats, and polluting our drinking water. With the next presidential campaign rapidly approaching, Iowa -- as the first state to vote for presidential nominees -- has the opportunity to shape the narrative toward a greener future for the entire Midwest by moving away from biofuels and instead promoting real climate solutions, such as wind energy, solar power, and land conservation.

As volunteers, members of the team will help to build grassroots power by working with community members and local organizations as well as participating in environmental advocacy work. Join us in addressing one of the most relevant and threatening issues of our time: sustainable, alternative energy.

Over the next several months, we will...
-- organize community and educational events
-- work with the media
-- meet with political leaders and elected officials
-- collect petition signatures and speak with community members
-- build a broad coalition of local groups to join us in pushing for policies that work for the climate, for wildlife, and for everyday farmers rather than just the interests of big agriculture.

Volunteer: Board of Directors

We are seeking community leaders to serve as members of our Board of Directors.  Directors have special knowledge, abilities and experiences that can contribute to the growth of Camp Fire in Central Iowa.  The board of directors consists of 16 to 18 members of the community and meets six times per year.  Many board members serve on committees that may meet more often. Camp Fire is very respectful of your time, by making meetings efficient and purposeful.

In this role, you will make three commitments; a commitment of time, a commitment of belief, and a commitment of financial support.

A COMMITMENT OF TIME

Conducting the business of Camp Fire Heart of Iowa means meeting as a board, in committees and with community groups. Meetings take time. Plus, time has to be given between one meeting and the next to complete assignments and make preparations. As a board member, you will also have opportunities to participate in council program activities, fundraising events, community forums and trainings. These are important ways to learn about your council and community and to stay in touch with the concerns of the members. Some board members over commit themselves. This leads to burnout and poor decisions. It is not good for the agency or for you. It is up to you to decide your personal limits. Good board members assume responsibility for only what they can complete efficiently and effectively.

A COMMITMENT OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT

The board is responsible for obtaining financial support from the communities it serves. This may be done in many ways, but the individual commitment of each board member is essential. Each board member contributes to the financial stability of the council in three ways.

Each board member is expected to make a financial contribution within his or her means. The amount of the contribution will certainly have an impact on the council, but more important is the act of giving. When each member of a board gives to support the council, it is a positive message to other givers in the community. Each board member is also expected to help identify sources of support for the council. The knowledge you have of the community will help the council implement an effective financial development program. Finally, each board member must be willing to ask for contributions to the council. Of course, this is done as part of an overall plan developed by the board.

If you feel you have skills in marketing, finances, law, programming or planning, and you want to make a difference for young people in an outdoor setting, Camp Fire is the opportunity for you to give back to the community. Terms for this next board calendar start in March and extend for two years.

Volunteer: Cedar Valley Readers Board Book Drive

Cedar Valley Readers is asking for community volunteer groups or individuals to host a Board Book Drive. Board books are for ages birth to 5 years old. They are more durable and promote early learning and motor skill development. We give board books out through our Booking Brighter Futures program, which provides 1 book each month to each family served by our partner home visitation agencies (Lutheran Services in Iowa, Tri-County Head Start, and Operation Threshold). This is roughly 460 families at any given time. In order to support the Booking Brighter Futures program, we need YOUR help in getting good quality used or new board books to these kids!

Volunteers would not be directly working with children; however, the books directly benefit infants/preschoolers (0-4) and children (5-12).

Books can be delivered to Operation Threshold, where Cedar Valley Readers is housed, at 1535 Lafayette Street, Waterloo, IA 50703. Ask for Karlene Izer at the front desk. Please contact Karlene via email or phone (kizer@operationthreshold.org, 319-292-1823) to make arrangements BEFORE dropping off books.
