Community Youth Concepts (CYC) hosts a Community Fridge at our building at 1446 MLK Jr. Parkway (Corner of MLK and Clark) to provide food and toiletries for those in need and to reduce food waste in our community.  With the refrigerator and extra shelf space we are able to accept both fresh and shelf stable items.   In addition, prepared food can also be left as long as it is in either individual or family size containers (could be zip lock bags, sealable takout containers, etc. (please, no large buffet or other serving size containers)) and labled with what it is and the date prepared. 

Food can be left directly in the fridge or shelves as appropriate and there is access 24/7.  Fridge shed is located in parking lot behind building - entrance to parking lot is off of Clark St.  For large deliveries, please contact CYC during regular business hours  for staff support.  (515 -243 4292).   Popular items that move quickly are:

The statewide Pi515 AI Challenge offers students ages 18-24 an opportunity to tackle real-world social and economic issues in Iowa using Multi-Modal AI and big data. Teams of 3-5 students will design innovative and scalable solutions that address challenges in agriculture, finance, cybersecurity, and education. This program runs February-April 2026 and culminates with a public pitch competition, where top teams present their ideas for the chance to win awards funds to further develop their project.

Sign up to be a AI Challenge mentor. This includes:

1. Working with a team of 3-5 students

2. Offering expertise, guidance, and support as teams develop their AI solution and model

3. Meeting at least twice (1-2 hours, virtually) over the course of the program (February - April 2026)

Volunteers are needed to help families get food, clothing and other basic necessities at the Families Forward Bidwell Pantry. Training is provided when a volunteer first arrives.

Volunteers should be 5 years of age or older to volunteer. Youth 12 years of age and younger should have an adult on site with them while volunteering.

United Way Muscatine's Educate United Affinity group is looking for Reading Mentors for McKinley Elementary School. Reading Mentors will go to the school one time per week during a 30-Min reading block and work kids on small group basis. The children will rotate so volunteers will see all or a good portion of the kids in their assigned class each time. The Reading Mentors will read to the children and have the children read to them. Reading Mentors can bring an age-appropriate book or use one the school has. Volunteers are needed during the following times.

The Meals on Wheels Hydroponic Farm is a 3,000 square foot indoor farm capable of producing 20,000 pounds of leafy greens a year. Our farm provides some of our most at risk populations in the metro a source of fresh, healthy greens year-round. We also provide greens to other WesleyLife and local communities.

Are you looking for a great team-building volunteer opportunity for your work group/department, school team or group, church group, social club, or friend group? As a Friendly Caller, you will become part of a team, who, on any given weekday, delivers nearly 2,000 healthy, delicious meals to older adults, veterans, and adults with special needs in Polk and Dallas Counties. Along with a hot meal, the team delivers a friendly face and a daily well-being check to each of our participants.

A Friendly Caller like you allows Meals on Wheels to provide an added support system to participants who are isolated and often lonely. Your call may support the participant’s emotional wellbeing and give peace of mind to family members who worry about their loved ones but can’t always be with them.

Calls can take place 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. You can establish a regular call schedule with your matched clients on a 1x/week, 2x/month, or 1x/month basis. Calls last anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.

This is a great time to become a Friendly Caller volunteer! We are matching Meals on Wheels participants with volunteers.  

We all play an important role in protecting the health, safety, and privacy of our participants, team members, and volunteers. You will receive instructions on how to make sure you're doing your part, and ongoing training can be provided upon request.

Every weekday, Wesley Life Meals on Wheels prepares and delivers nearly 2,000 hot, nutritious lunches to homebound older adults, veterans, and people living with disabilities. Our volunteers support this mission by delivering meals directly to those in need, while taking a moment to check in with our participants to make sure they are safe and well.    

In 2024, WesleyLife Meals on Wheels delivered 428,116 hot meals to older adults, veterans, and people living with physical and mental disabilities. We know that 91% of our clients report eating healthier, and 94% of our clients are able to stay independent in their own homes thanks in part to Meals on Wheels.

Kids' club is a way to explore the visual arts and treasures of the MacNider Art Museum. For ages 5-12. This class can have up to 30 students. Volunteers will help our young crafters with their art projects, assist the teacher keep students on task, pass out art supplies and other simple tasks.

Sidewalkers are at least 14 years. They help set up and tear down equipment in the arena before, in between and/or after sessions. They also walk next to the participant during sessions and assist with balance and exercises. They must be able to comfortably walk and jog, for short distances, next to a horse while providing physical support to a participant.

Days and times that sessions are conducted:
Monday-Thursday and Saturday morning through early afternoon.
Volunteers typically work a 2-3 hour shift on their day, NOT the entire duration of sessions.

Convivium Urban Farmstead's mission is to "improve lives through food." As part of our mission, we provide access and education about healthy food choices to children and others who are struggling with food access and the adverse health effects of eating a diet of highly processed food. Our adult, family, and youth cooking and nutrition education classes are designed to expose people to real, fresh foods; provide the knowledge of where our food comes from and the importance of healthy choices; and teach the skills of how to prepare simple recipes using fresh ingredients. Volunteer instructor aides will help lead such classes. Curriculum is provided. Instructor aides will help with class set-up and clean up and serve as extra hands throughout the class. Experience  cooking, baking and/or teaching or leading groups would be beneficial but not required. Instructor aides must attend an orientation/training.

At The Hope Center, we partner with Release Inc. to find mentors for our members. 

Release is looking for Christian mentors over the age of 18 who have a heart for struggling/at-risk youth. You will be their friend, guide, and advocate. These youth simply need someone to listen to them and be an example of what it means to live in relationship with the Lord. 

You will be able to meet with your mentee on your own schedule.

Outlook Enrichment is seeking dedicated volunteers to help make a difference in the lives of our blind and visually impaired event participants.

We need reliable drivers to provide transportation to and from our events, ensuring everyone can fully participate and enjoy our activities. We plan to build a roster of volunteers in case their availability changes. Support will be ongoing and dependent on our event schedule!

Join the United Way of the Midlands in service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. With your support, we'll pack 2,000 snack packs for a North Omaha nonprofit partner.

Led by United Way of the Midlands staff, volunteers will set up the volunteer kit build for 2,000 kits for delivery to Heart Ministry Center.

Setup volunteers will:

- Unload the kit supplies and assist staff in bringing them into The Venue.

- Set up product on assembly lines with support from UWM staff

- Discard any plastic and cardboard while getting items ready for line assembly.

The Regional Nurse Leader (RNL) is a front-line leader of the Nursing Network who partners with the local Regional Volunteer Services Officer (RVSO) to recruit health professional volunteers per regional needs. The RNL provides guidance on nursing and health matters and helps build the health professional network in the region. RNLs promote volunteer engagement and satisfaction across the business lines and work to achieve the Volunteer Services Chief Nurse Initiatives. The American Red Cross National Nursing Network is comprised of all Red Cross nurses. DNLs appoint Associate Division Nurse Leaders (ADNLs) to support RNLs and to assist them according to the division's unique needs.

* Proactively support and guide Red Cross units in volunteer recruitment, reception, retention, and recognition to build health professional capacity across all business lines and at all levels of the organization in support of organizational and regional priorities. Assist units in volunteer recruitment to reflect community demographics.

* Act as a resource for nursing and health in the region across all business lines, working collaboratively with Nursing Network leaders and others to achieve the Chief Nurse Initiatives.

* Establish a good working relationship with key leaders at the regional level (e.g., Emergency Services Director, CEO, nurse/health leaders in other business lines).

* Establish relationships with community partners (nurses and non-nurses) and maintain updated roster

* Submit all RNL hours in Volunteer Connection on at least a monthly basis and maintain an updated Volunteer Connection profile

* Complete quarterly metrics and annual Nursing & Health Leaders Diversity Survey

* Recruit and support Nursing Network Engagement Specialists as needed.

The American Red Cross provides 40% of the blood supply to the country. The Biomedical volunteers are a critical element to carrying out our mission, their experience and onboard is vital to volunteer growth.
The Onboarding Lead will manage a Biomedical Volunteer Workforce Engagement team who initiate a relationship with new volunteers to the department. Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are smaller disasters like home fires. The Recovery Services Client Care Program allows the Red Cross to rapidly meet disaster-caused needs by enabling clients to apply and receive financial assistance and/or community resources.

The Client Care Program Service Associate supports the recovery of disaster affected individuals, households, and communities by providing referrals, advocacy, and financial assistance through RC Care (case management system).

Responsibilities:

Conduct Intake by interviewing the client and opening a case in RC Care

"Riders Club answering service.  Are you calling about a ride which has already been scheduled?"

Riders Club is the car someone no longer drives.

Riders and drivers can be active 24/7 which means there are times they cannot find each other.  Since the office is only open for scheduling from 9 am to 3 pm, Monday through Friday, we need someone to answer the phone outside office hours and on Holidays.

Work from any location that has a phone to help drivers, riders and the office!  Our phone system allows us to forward phones to any number.  We can even adjust the call destination remotely!

Our Ride Management System (RCA RMS) gives you all the information to help others get back on track. 

You will need web access and a computer.  Printing out the master manifest allows you to be mobile without using the internet on your mobile phone.  A common evening involves 0 to 5 phone calls.

Point-in-Time is an annual Federally required census of people experiencing unsheltered homelessness in the Polk County area. 

The annual PIT Count will occur January 28-29th, 2026.

Volunteers are required to register for a 4 hour shift and attend a training to participate in the annual count of unsheltered individuals.

Training will occur on January 21 at 8:15 am and at 4:15 pm. Volunteers need to only attend one of the 30 minute trainings.

ReStore volunteers help with all the daily tasks of running the store. Tasks will include unloading donations, assisting with small projects, cleaning, re-merchandising products, and organizing the different departments within the store.  We also need volunteers willing to ride in our truck along with staff to pick up donated items within the Iowa City and Coralville areas. Volunteers will help construction staff through the entire home building process including framing, painting, trim work, cabinet installation, energy efficiency upgrades, and more. No prior skills or knowledge are necessary! We train you and give you all the tools you need to accomplish the tasks for each shift. Age Restrictions: All volunteers must be at least 16 years old. All volunteers under 18 must have a liability waiver filled out and signed by a parent or legal guardian. Anamosa High School is opening up their new gym to the community!

VITA Tax Preparers provide free, high-quality tax preparation assistance to eligible individuals and families through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Volunteers help ensure taxpayers understand their returns and receive all credits and refunds they are entitled to.

We are currently looking for passionate people to volunteer as Fresh Conversations Facilitators! Fresh Conversations is a monthly nutrition program that takes place at congregate meal sites and community centers. The Fresh Conversations Facilitator is responsible for leading a discussion based on the monthly Fresh Conversations newsletter as well as preparing the food tasting. The groups are generally small (8-12 people) and the meeting lasts about 30 minutes.

We provide a monthly Facilitator Guide to make presenting the information fun and easy. A background in nutrition is not required, just a desire to help others maintain healthy and active lives!

On Monday, January 19, volunteers will join fellow members of the Omaha-Council Bluffs community to commemorate and celebrate the work and life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Led by United Way of the Midlands staff, volunteers will assemble and pack up 2,000 kits for delivery to Heart Ministry Center.

Cedar Rock State Park (a 40-minute drive from Waterloo) and the Friends of Cedar Rock (a nonprofit that supports the Walter House) are looking for a volunteer teacher to possibly lead three two-or-three-hour summer camps (May—August 2026). The ideal would be a summer camp for elementary-aged children, middle school, and high school. We are looking for volunteers to help plan, design, and lead these summer camps for 2026. 

Cedar Rock State park preserves the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Lowell Walter Residence. The Usonian-style house was constructed on a bank of the Wapsipinicon River near Quasqueton, Iowa, in 1950. Frank Lloyd Wright is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most famous architects of all time. He designed eight of the 26 UNESCO World Heritage sites in the United States. The Walter House is on the National Register of Historic Places in Iowa. It is a very distinct house in the Frank Lloyd Wright world because it is one of only 25 Wright dwellings with his signature block, which was Wright’s way to communicate a house of noteworthy dissection. We would like these three summer camps to focus on architecture and nature (as Frank Lloyd Wright's style of architecture—called organic architecture—was to build homes that connected/integrated with nature). Dr. Laura Porter, Executive Director of the Iowa Architectural Foundation, is willing to share a curriculum they use for 5-day youth camps in Des Moines to make architecture alive, real, and exciting to youth. Their curriculum is for 8th and 9th graders.

Camp Wapsie uses a lot of firewood for campfires. We are seeking volunteers who can bring their own chainsaw and help cut down dying trees or cut up down trees for firewood. We will fell most trees that are near buildings or in more dangerous spots. We also have a splitter volunteers can use to split wood. Volunteers must be fairly active as this is a somewhat physical activity. Volunteers fill out a Voluntary Disclosure form if they are here when we have guests in camp.

Camp Wapsie has several areas that could use some painting updates. We are seeking volunteers who can help us painting some walls, benches, signs and other areas around camp. Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 11:30 am.

Commitment to one shift a week is preferred, but not required.

Our preschool consists of a 3-year-old room and a 4-year-old room, where children not only prepare for school but also develop essential English language skills. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley (BBBSMV) urgently needs mentors — especially male mentors — with more than 200 local youth currently waiting for a Big. One caring adult can make a life-changing difference. Our one-to-one mentoring programs connect dedicated volunteers with local youth to build meaningful relationships that help young people gain confidence and reach their full potential.

Every BBBSMV match is intentionally designed with safety, compatibility, and success in mind. Volunteers commit to meeting with their Little 2–4 times per month for 12 months, with each visit lasting about 45 minutes — a consistent, manageable commitment that builds trust over time. Matches can take advantage of activities offered through BBBSMV and our community partners — from TBK Sports Complex and arcade or bowling outings to Figge Art Museum classes and more. Bigs receive weekly emails highlighting available activities, including BBBS-hosted experiences and partner-provided opportunities, making it easy to plan fun, meaningful time together.

School-Based Plus Program
Bigs and Littles meet both at a local elementary school and out in the community, offering the best of both worlds. Time together may include reading, playing games, sharing a meal, or enjoying recess at school, along with participating in BBBSMV and partner activities in the community. Bigs receive weekly emails featuring upcoming opportunities, and matches are invited to quarterly match events that celebrate connections and shared experiences.

School-Based Program
Bigs meet exclusively at a local elementary school during lunch or recess. Activities may include reading, art projects, board games, homework help, outdoor play, and spending quality time together — providing Littles with a consistent, caring adult presence during the school day.

Match & Group Events for Community-Based and School-Based Plus Matches
BBBSMV hosts quarterly match events to celebrate and strengthen connections, along with monthly group activities for all Bigs and Littles. These include developmentally focused outings for elementary students and Big Futures events that support career exploration, goal setting, and post–high school planning for middle and high school youth.
