The show airs live every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7am-8am. It is rebroadcast at noon and 7pm that same day.

Local Talk meets every Monday and Thursday from 11am - 12pm to discuss topics and plan the shows for the upcoming weeks.

Reporter duties include, but are not limited to:

Being trained by the KHOI station manager and learning standard radio practices for reporting, interviewing, production, and hosting.

Finding stories to being to the production meeting, setting up interviews for the live show, hosting the live show based on your schedule.

Quality of life at the end of life. You can help bring this support to individuals and families. Whether behind the scenes with administrative support or providing companionship to patients, your presence will make a difference on the Care Initiatives Hospice team. Volunteers are needed in Central Iowa including the Ames, Des Moines, Panora, Marshalltown, State Center, Story City, Stratford, Jefferson, Zearing, and Montezuma areas.  You will visit hospice patients in a nursing facility or in their home.

Planning of weekly program activities, preparation of materials, and leadership at meetings are some of the things you will do in this important role.

Our volunteers are a vital part of keeping the library running. We are currently looking for a volunteer to help shelve books that are reserved for patrons. Volunteers may be asked in addition to help with craft projects, data entry work, and restocking supplies around the library.

This is a weekly commitment, taking up approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Shelvers should be able to bend down and straighten repeatedly. Must be detail oriented and be able to alphabetize. The Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) provides free of charge counseling and information to people with questions about Medicare, Medicare supplement insurance, long term care insurance and claim filing. Volunteers help answer questions and provide impartial information to help seniors make well informed decisions. Volunteer counselors complete an extensive five day training program and regular update trainings. Training is provided free of charge by the State of Iowa Insurance Division.  Volunteers with this program often dedicate 8 hours a week to the program with the exception of open enrollment period (Oct-Dec) in which they may see a small increase in hours. The Jones County Volunteer Center and the Jones County Emergency Management Agency partnered in 2014 to form an official Emergency Volunteer Center (EVC) for Jones County. The purpose of the EVC is to manage volunteers and their safety during large scale events, including natural disasters. The EVC is focusing on training volunteers on EVC operations and action plans, recruiting new volunteers, and planning a disaster drill in Jones County. Volunteers come from all walks of life and are only required to attend an EVC orientation and basic training. Once completed volunteers have the option of continuing their disaster training to the extend they are interested in.  This is a great opportunity for those who want to assist in time of need but may not have the physical capability of the man power needed for clean up efforts.  Call us today to get more information!

5-2-1-0 is the foundation of change of an evidence-based childhood obesity prevention program addressing many aspects of wellness. Its message is used to aid children, ages birth to 18, make healthy lifestyle choices.  5-2-1-0 helps to create a sustainable healthy environment for staff, children and families.

Throughout the year we have several opportunities available to help with providing health and wellness information and education to the community.  Full training will be provided.

There is an ongoing opportunity to be involved in our Coalition to reduce youth substance use.  We are always in need of community members who have a wide variety of skills. We have a Marketing and Special Events committee, Policy committee, Outreach and Fundraising Committee, Executive Committee and a Planning Committee (that meets on an as needed basis).  We also have a youth advisory group that needs adult sponsors. If you cannot come to regular monthly coalition meetings or be involved in committees, you can also just volunteer with various special events and fundraisers or even with office work or hanging posters or signs. We may have fundraising opportunities that include baking and serving food or helping with a 5K this fall. 

The Artisan's Sanctuary is a non-profit arts cooperative that needs a volunteer to manage/update our website.

Country View Care Facility seeks Recreation Assistants to assist Recreation Aides with outings, special events and activities. As an assistant you'll do so many fun things with residents - especially in the warmer months when residents can get outdoors and take advantage of things happening in the area. More volunteers participating means more residents can participate, especially those in wheelchairs!

This is an opportunity for those 18 years or older with opportunities Monday - Friday days with a few evenings on occasion. Some may have to assist with pushing wheelchairs, but it's not a necessity to participate.

Some Recreation Assistants have helped with events such as outings to community events, participating in a picnic, an ice cream outing, fishing, attending a baseball game, and shopping at Wal-Mart.  

Become a volunteer driver with the American Cancer Society Road To Recovery program and provide rides as requested from cancer patients to and from their cancer treatments. Most rides take place during the hours of 7AM-6PM, Monday through Friday. The frequency of requests and times vary daily depending on how many patients need a ride at any given time. Every volunteer driver donates their time and gas - and can decide how often to provide rides, when, and how far! This is a very flexible and meaningful program - which can be lifesaving for cancer patients who have no other transportation options.

Volunteer drivers must have:

* A current, valid driver’s license and between the ages of 18-84 
* A good driving record
* Access to a safe and reliable vehicle 
* Proof of adequate automobile insurance

Cedar Valley Friends of the Family has started a new comprehensive program to offer services to victims of Human Trafficking. Human Trafficking brings in billions of dollars worldwide. On any given day there are around 300 people for sale in Iowa. CVFF has taken the initiative to offer after care to victims that have faced this trauma.

The Human Trafficking program is unique and one of the first of its kind in Iowa. The Iowa Attorney General’s office has made human trafficking a priority by funding powerful initiatives like this one. CVFF is looking for community collaboration to stop human trafficking. It’s through these collaborative efforts that true healing can begin. We need skills based volunteers to partner with us and help empower victims.

Volunteer Advocate and Night Advocate Description:
Seeking individuals who want to empower victims of human trafficking. Do you have compassion for those who have been impacted by modern day slavery? We are looking for volunteer advocates who are willing to be trained and offer direct support services to victims. The duties range from transportation to appointments to just being a listener.

Preferred Qualifications: MSW/BSW or Bachelors in Psychology. Experience in domestic violence or sexual assault.

We host monthly low-cost vaccination and microchip clinics and they typically fall on Saturday mornings. These have gotten very popular and they tend to be extremely busy. Volunteers help people fill out paperwork and navigate the line for services. Some animal handling experience as well as good customer service skills is helpful.

Interested individuals will need to attend a volunteer orientation or make arrangements for special training.

We can do anywhere from 25 to 80 spay or neuter surgeries, depending on the day! This means that our morning check in/out process can be really busy. Volunteers greet clients and their animals at the door and give them the appropriate form to fill out. They also help clean up the lobby area after check out/in is over around 9:00am.

Interested individuals would need to attend a volunteer orientation or arrange for special training.

We need someone that is punctual and can make files from scratch.

We need someone that can put together applications for food stamps, financial aid, and health care.

We need someone that can open up the mail in the mornings.

We need someone that can sort papers.

We need someone that can pass a background check.

LSI's People Place offers support for parents of young children. Help care for children while their parents participate in parent education support groups and classes. Help provide a warm, caring and positive atmosphere modeling patience, encouragement and respect.

Currently, we are seeking volunteers who are available on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 9:30-11:30am.

Volunteers are needed to sort clothing and help clients select outfits. A Clothes Closet Committee meeting is held once every six weeks.  Volunteers are encouraged to attend committee meetings but it is not required.

Volunteer language proficiency evaluators at Iowa Legal Aid play an important role in helping low-income Iowans with limited English proficiency (LEP) skills gain access to justice. Language proficiency evaluators will assess the translation and interpretation abilities of prospective volunteer translators and interpreters. In addition, they may also review and provide feedback on the materials translated by Iowa Legal Aid’s volunteer translators. A Safe Home Volunteer offer a safe place for clients of domestic abuse and their families to stay in an emergency for 1-3 days/night. You provide a completely confidential, safe, no-questions-asked environment. ( A safe home is different than a shelter.)

A volunteer receives a call from an advocate who asks if you are available that evening to host a survivor (and sometimes her children). If you are available, the advocate or a transport volunteer will bring the client to your home. She is instructed to keep the location confidential for her own safety as well as yours.

If requested, an advocate can bring supplies from our food pantry and personal care closet with items that clients may need while staying with you. These items include food, toiletries, and towels and are donated by generous communities throughout our service area. 

After a night or two, when more permanent housing is secured, the advocate will transport the survivor to her new place to stay.  At anytime during the client’s stay, you are welcome to contact the advocate on call for any answers or direction you may need.

You can decide when or when not to host a survivor, depending upon your availability.  It is best to keep the volunteer coordinator updated on any vacations or stretches of time when you absolutely will not be available.

We are finishing a home and soon will start a new home.  We need all skills and volunteers to work with the skilled person.  Examples, are building the frame, roofing, dry wall, painting, general carpentry.

- Volunteers needing office space to perform volunteer activities or wishing to only work on in-house cases may make arrangements with the regional Iowa Legal Aid office. Tax Software is available in some regional offices.

Youth Mentoring at Helping Services for Northeast Iowa serves youth, ages 5-16, in Allamakee, Delaware, Howard, and Winneshiek Counties. Youth are waiting for a mentor, and we are in need of adults who are eager to be a positive role model for youth. Federally funded legal assistance programs are unable to meet all of the legal needs of Iowa’s low-income population.Documenting the Justice Gap in America ? The Current Unmet Civil Legal Needs of Low-income Americans,” by the Legal Services Corporation found that: For every client served by an LSC-funded program, at least one person who sought help was turned down because of insufficient resources.

HOW LAWYERS CAN HELP IOWA’S POOR:

A little of your time can make a big difference. By contributing your expertise through the Iowa Legal Aid Volunteer Lawyers Project, you can provide desperately needed legal assistance. It is projected that approximately 500,000 low-income people in Iowa have income below 125% of the poverty level ($28,813 for a family of four), yet have serious legal problems. The Iowa Rules of Professional Conduct encourage every lawyer to aspire to provide at least 50 hours of pro bono legal services per year.

The Iowa Legal Aid Volunteer Lawyers Project needs attorneys willing to represent low-income clients in a wide variety of civil legal matters, including family law, consumer problems, landlord/tenant disputes, civil rights and government benefits cases.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE VOLUNTEER LAWYERS PROJECT?

All Iowa attorneys, recent admittees, as well as experienced practitioners, are encouraged to participate. Established members of the bar will appreciate the opportunity to explore new areas of practice and develop new insights into the problems of the poor. HOW THE VOLUNTEER LAWYERS PROJECT WORKS:

Iowa has three Volunteer Lawyers Projects. They are the Iowa Legal Aid Volunteer Lawyers Project, serving residents of 96 Iowa counties, the Polk County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project, which serves residents of Polk County, and the Pro Bono Project of Scott/Clinton County, which services residents of Scott and Clinton Counties. The Volunteer Lawyers Projects are designed to give participating attorneys control over the number of pro bono referrals to be accepted and the decision as to whether to accept a given referral at a given time. Volunteer lawyers are initially contacted by a Referral Coordinator, rather than by the would-be client, and are given the opportunity to accept or decline each referral.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. the 4th graders of the Mt. Ayr Elementary School will write dreams of their own. Each student will write about an idea or project they have to improve their school or community. Various dreams will be selected to "come true". There were will be an assembly held on MLK Day to announce the winners. AmeriCorps members will then connect youth to the corresponding person or agency who is able to work with them to make the dreams come true. (For example, if a student has a dream for new trees to be planted, the AmeriCorps member may connect them with their local DNR). AmeriCorps members will work with the various youth and corresponding agency in a on-going manner to oversee project implementation.

An AmeriCorps member in Murray, IA has organized a "food fight" competition between classes at the Middle School and High School level where classes will compete to see who can collect the most canned goods to be donated to their local food pantry.

Qualifications:

Waterloo Elementary Schools are seeking volunteers 55 years or older to be Reading Buddies with children in first grade who are participating in the Reading Recovery program.

Skills required by volunteer: Volunteers must be patient and literate themselves, being able to read and speak clearly and fluently.  Time commitment:  Once or more a week.  The time served per visit is determined by the teacher. The frequency the volunteer will meet with student(s) is determined by the teacher and agreed upon by the volunteer. Befriend a Country View resident who may not have family or friends in the area.  Meet with your resident friend at least twice a month with to visit and share common interests and activities.  Individual volunteers age 18 and over are welcome daily.  Families may bring children if they are supervised by an adult.  If you'd like, meet your resident friend when they go shopping, out to eat or on other outings with recreation staff. 

Help one or two adults with special needs experience the fun of fishing. Volunteers age 16 and over are welcome daily with flexible times as arranged. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers transporting residents must have a valid driver's license.

Are you entertaining? Share your gift with us! We are looking for individual or group volunteers to entertain us with music, dance, a magic act, a comedy routine, being a clown, making balloon animals, doing face painting or anything entertaining!  Daytime and evening opportunities available as arranged.  Families and groups are welcome. Volunteers under 18 must stay within sight of a rec aide or be accompanied by an adult.

Assist a resident in organizing their closet by removing clothes that are out of season, do not fit, are worn out or stained, need mending, etc. Organize remaining clothing neatly in closet. Turn in other clothing items to volunteer coordinator or assigned staff. Communicate to volunteer coordinator any clothing shortages or needs. Volunteers age 18 and over are welcome daily with flexible times as arranged.

Assist a recreation aide with a small group of residents in working with ceramics. Assist in bringing residents in wheelchairs to the activity. Assist with setup and cleanup. Residents may have limited abilities or special needs. No previous experience in ceramics needed. Volunteers age 16 and over are welcome at scheduled activity times.

Help keep bulletin boards updated and attractive with current seasonal or holiday backgrounds. Materials provided. Opportunities exist daily with flexible times. Volunteers age 16 and up are welcome.

Accompany and assist residents attending appointments in the community. Meet a resident at their appointment site. Assist them into the building and with check in. Keep them company while waiting for the appointment and afterwards until transportation arrives. Volunteers will not accompany residents into the exam room and will not be utilized to relay medical information.  Assistance is needed on weekday days.

    Assist recreation staff with bingo.  Help rec aides bring residents in wheelchairs to the community room and back to their living area afterwards.  Assist residents playing bingo- with marking cards and with choosing prizes.  Bingo is played once a month on weekday mornings.  Volunteers between the ages of 13 and 17 must stay within sight of staff or be accompanied by another adult. 

    Help recreation staff give adults with special needs the opportunity to go shopping, out to eat, on picnics, fishing or attending community events, etc.  Assist recreation staff with crafts, other activities or special events.  The ability to push a wheelchair is helpful but not necessary. 

   Provide baked goods or treats on arranged dates for special events or fundraisers.  You choose how often you help, what you make and the quantities that you wish to donate.  Most times arrangements can be made to pick up baked goods if you have no transportation.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Monroe, Wapello, and Jefferson Counties is seeking individuals to serve on the RSVP Advisory Council for Monroe and Wapello Counties. The RSVP Advisory Council for Monroe and Wapello Counties provides support and guidance to RSVP activities specifically in the Monroe and Wapello counties.

The council will consist of approximately 7 to 15 community members who are passionate about the community and are versed in a wide range of key areas including, but not limited to, community service and volunteerism, human and social needs of the community, public relations, and programming.

The council should both reflect the demographics of the program’s service area and of the RSVP age demographic (persons aged 55 and older). Unlike a board of directors, the advisory council is not a legal governing body of the RSVP program. Rather, the council uses its expertise to guide the program and assist in its success.

Great opportunity for anyone who loves helping others! Our Agency is looking for volunteer advocates whom are willing to be the first to respond to crisis situations. As an on-call trained advocate the volunteer will be able to assist survivors of domestic violence during police interviews, accompany survivors to a hospital if necessary, provide survivors with counseling, crisis intervention services, information, and referrals soon after a crisis.

This could be a perfect opportunity for college students to earn experience and/or do their internship at our agency.

Training will be provided free of cost!

Candidates most complete a 30 hrs training that will be provided by our agency free of cost. Candidates most be able to pass background checks. Bilingual/Multilingual candidates are encouraged to participate. Candidates most be willing to maintain the most strict confidentiality and adhere to the Code of Ethics as required by Iowa Law.

An opportunity for volunteers to organize activities within the community to create awareness on different issues affecting our community. This opportunity involves organizing displays, presentations, and diverse events. Some travel may be required.

We are looking for a volunteer who is very energetic and creative to plan and coordinate fundraising activities and/or events within our community. Ability to interact with diverse population, communication skills a plus. Some travel may be required.

Volunteer will be required to complete the Advocacy Training that is provided free of cost by our agency. The volunteer will provide direct services to clients that are undergoing court processes or are involve somehow in the Judicial System. This includes but not limited to accompany clients to trials, depositions, assisting client to fill out restraining order forms, etc. This is a great opportunity for interns!

Region 5 of Iowa: Appanoose, Davis, Jasper, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lucas, Mahaska, Marion, Monroe, Poweshiek, Wapello, and Wayne Counties.

Many non-direct care opportunities are present for volunteers at the Child Care Center including: reading to children, sanitizing toys, cleaning windows, grounds keeping, laundry, and many other "housekeeping" tasks. The Center follows the Ottumwa Community School District calendar and is therefore, closed on certain holidays, including Spring Break and Christmas Break. The Center is also not open during the summer months when school is not in session.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Volunteers must also be able to sign a volunteer waiver indicating they are free of communicable diseases and have no criminal or child abuse record.

Helping with various clean-up activities, including window washing, lawn care, and various facility improvements. Working with and organizing events with youth.

Volunteers must pass child abuse and criminal records checks, as well as attend Volunteer Orientation.

The American Gothic House Center has several gardens full of perennial flowers, most of which are native prairie flowers. Volunteer gardeners help maintain the flower beds by weeding and removing dead buds and plants.

The residents at Good Samaritan Society Ottumwa need you and your talents. As you share your love with others, there will be mutual rewards. Many of our volunteers say that they receive much more than they give- and they give a lot!

We require criminal background check. We also require application form to be filled out. Orientation to volunteer positions include history and mission of the Good Samaritan Society, Resident Bill of Rights, the importance of confidentiality and the protection of vulnerable adults, communication with elderly residents, policies and procedures for volunteers, infection control, safety and emergency procedures and specific training for the assigned volunteer position.

Persons under the age of 18 must also have a signed parental/guardian consent form.

Iowa Resource for International Service (IRIS), a 501(c)3 organization located in downtown Ames, works with the U.S. Department of State to implement the Youth Exchange & Study (YES) Program in Iowa. YES participants are high school students (age 15-18) from Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. The students have won scholarships from the U.S. State Department to build leadership skills, gain an understanding and appreciation for community service, and share their cultures with Americans. In return, these students take back a love for America - and specifically, Iowa - dispelling misconceptions about our country and culture in their home countries.

Host families are needed for one semester or full school year commitments. Students live as a member of your family - chores, meals, church, activities, and other family expectations. Families receive a small stipend to offset school and activity registration and fees, and students are provided with monthly stipends to cover some of their personal costs. Our students are required to get involved in activities, do monthly community service, and integrate fully as a part of your family, high school, and community.

Iowa Resource for International Service (IRIS) is constantly in search of individuals and families throughout Story County to act as short term host families for our international guests. Once a year, IRIS has adults from Eastern Europe who come to Iowa to attend professional development programs for about three weeks. Area host families can act as a home-away-from-home for our participants as they develop skills in Iowa to take back home. Host families need only a bedroom for their guests and a hospitable attitude - sharing meals and taking guests about on your daily lives is enough to show international participants what a snapshot of life is like here in Iowa.
