Our goal at Many Hands is to be good stewards of the items we are given.  We try to repurpose, reuse, or recycle as much as possible.  This volunteer opportunity would be at our Merle Hay store sorting metal into categories to be recycled.

Help celebrate the holidays with Kids Can! Engage with students and families by playing games, serving cookies, and maybe even meeting Santa! 

West Des Moines Human Services is in need of new, unwrapped toys and teen gifts for their December Giftland Program. This program serves children from newborn up to age 18 from low-income households in the community.  Distribution takes place on December 16th, 17th and 18th at WDM Human Services. Donations may be dropped off weekdays between 8:30 am and 3 pm at WDM Human Services, 139 6th Street in the Valley Junction neighborhood. Curate Holiday Magic Sort and organize donated gifts and essential items for our Holiday Gift Room, where families can choose presents at no cost. Your work ensures every child has something special to open and every family has what they need.

Prepare for the Season Ahead As the holidays wind down, help us thoughtfully pack away decorations and organize items for next year, setting us up for success in serving families year-round.

Help us make sure that every child's Christmas is special by volunteering in Families Forward Holiday Toy Pantry! Helping over 1,000 children last year, we are so excited to get brand new toys out to children in need. Parents will "shop" through the free toy pantry to get a new toy, stocking-stuffer, book, and a stuffed animal for each child. Volunteers are needed to welcome families and help them shop!

Why it matters: For many families, this may be their only opportunity to give their children gifts this holiday season. our support helps preserve the dignity and magic of gift-giving.

Volunteers are needed to put a fresh coat of paint on the inside of one of The Home Connection houses so that we can welcome in a new family. We are hoping to have 6-7 volunteers paint inside and 3-4 volunteers do some outside yardwork (fall clean up if the weather permits). 

The Families Forward Home Connection program provides supportive housing for families with children experiencing homelessness. The Home Connection’s goal is to move families from homelessness to permanent housing with an emphasis on financial independence.

WesleyLife Dahl Adult Day Center are looking for committed short term and/or long term volunteers to help and assist our participants during our open hours. Proficiency in Spanish is required. Because of the sensitive nature of medical appointments, strong fluency and a robust knowledge of medical terminology is a must. Previous experience interpreting in a medical setting a plus.

Volunteers are needed to help stock the pantry on Tuesday nights, Thursday nights, and some Saturdays. Volunteers will help in the following ways:

Cedar Valley Angels is partnering with 13 other nonprofits this holiday season to bring joy to children experiencing foster care, kinship care, or who have been adopted from care!

Requirements: Good communication skills. Ability to stand, bend, lift, climb and carry up to 30 pounds. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old. 13-16 year-old volunteers must have adult supervision. Must be respectful of workplace policies.

Making lunches: Teams of 6-12 volunteers will make up to 300 sack lunches per day, with up to 150 lunches handed out to homeless neighbors and 150 lunches delivered to nearby, low-income, "senior-living" apartments.

Duties include making and bagging meat sandwiches, snacks, vegetables, etc. Volunteers will clean up utensils, tables and floors.

Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 11:30 am.

Commitment to one shift a week is preferred, but not required. 

Many jobs can be accomplished by sitting, although some standing and lifting may be involved.

Compliance with health guidelines and respectful workplace policies, required.

Distributing lunches: One or two individuals to greet and hand out bagged lunches and drinks for up to 150 homeless neighbors from designated "yellow" door.

Holy Family Grounds keeping/Environmental Volunteer

Purpose: An outreach program of Holy Family Ministries. Volunteers conduct general upkeep, maintenance of grounds and support of raised beds in the garden to provide produce for our Food Pantry.

Girl Scouts is for every girl, but for some, after-school programming is the only way they can participate. We need your help leading an after-school troop! The Council provides comprehensive training, materials, lesson plans, and ongoing support to ensure success in this role. As an ESL conversation partner, you play a crucial role in facilitating language practice for refugee clients through regular meetings in the comfort of their homes or within the community, fostering a supportive environment for effective language development.

The Snow Angels Program is a volunteer-based snow shoveling program where elderly (60+) Moline residents or residents with a physical disability get paired with a volunteer to get assistance removing snow and ice from the sidewalk adjacent to their property (boulevard only, not sidewalks to their door nor driveways). The program is intended for use by residents who do not have other resources, such as a neighbor, family, or friends, or who cannot hire a service. The program's goal is to ensure pedestrians and kids walking to school are safe during the winter months.

We’re preparing for our Annual Winter Concert, a beloved tradition where our students and their families come together to sing, laugh, and celebrate the holiday season together. This special event not only celebrates the holiday season but also gives us the opportunity to make sure every one of our 90 students—from 6 weeks to 5-year-olds—feels the magic of the holidays.

Many of our families face financial challenges, and we want to ensure that no child is left out of the celebration. Our goal is simple: to provide each student with at least one meaningful holiday gift, regardless of their family's circumstances.

We’re looking for a fun, kid-friendly character to help make our winter concert extra special! At the end of the concert, we invite a surprise guest to deliver individual gifts to our students. We ask that this character be non-religious, not Santa, and completely child-appropriate.

The Regional Nurse Leader (RNL) is a front-line leader of the Nursing Network who partners with the local Regional Volunteer Services Officer (RVSO) to recruit health professional volunteers per regional needs. The RNL provides guidance on nursing and health matters and helps build the health professional network in the region. RNLs promote volunteer engagement and satisfaction across the business lines and work to achieve the Volunteer Services Chief Nurse Initiatives. The American Red Cross National Nursing Network is comprised of all Red Cross nurses. Nursing Network leaders recruit and support nurses and other health professionals across all business lines to implement strategic goals of the American Red Cross as articulated in the Chief Nurse Initiatives. The American Red Cross is divided into geographic divisions, regions and chapters for service delivery. Each division has a Division Nurse Leader (DNL) appointed by the Chief Nurse and the Director of the Nursing Network. DNLs appoint Associate Division Nurse Leaders (ADNLs) to support RNLs and to assist them according to the division's unique needs.

Responsibilities

* Proactively support and guide Red Cross units in volunteer recruitment, reception, retention, and recognition to build health professional capacity across all business lines and at all levels of the organization in support of organizational and regional priorities. Assist units in volunteer recruitment to reflect community demographics.

* Act as a resource for nursing and health in the region across all business lines, working collaboratively with Nursing Network leaders and others to achieve the Chief Nurse Initiatives.

* Establish a good working relationship with key leaders at the regional level (e.g., Emergency Services Director, CEO, nurse/health leaders in other business lines).

* Ensure that nurse volunteers enter their nurse-specific information in Volunteer Connection and submit all volunteer hours

* Submit all RNL hours in Volunteer Connection on at least a monthly basis and maintain an updated Volunteer Connection profile

* Complete quarterly metrics and annual Nursing & Health Leaders Diversity Survey.

* Recruit and support Nursing Network Engagement Specialists as needed.

RNLs should recruit for and mentor their own replacements in consultation with RVSOs and DNLs.

Volunteers — or “Snow Heroes” — who would like to help shovel snow from public sidewalks for Cedar Rapids residents in need this winter. Snow Hero volunteers can sign up on the City of Cedar Rapids website at www.CityofCR.com/SnowBuddies. Heroes must be at least 18 years old and provide their own snow-removal equipment. 

Snow Heroes will be paired with eligible residents in need - based on factors such as location and availability. Snow Heroes will not be allowed to solicit or accept money, tips or gifts for their volunteer activities. Can't commit to the whole winter season but want to help keep our sidewalks safe and clear? Backup Snow Buddies are needed as well! 

As cold and flu season approaches, the Eastern Iowa Health Center is seeking volunteers to host a coat drive for our adult patients. We are collecting hats, gloves, and winter coats in all sizes to help ensure that our patients stay warm and healthy throughout the colder months.

An ongoing holiday giving challenge is to stock up on our shelter necessities!

Donations for shelter necessities do not require any gift wrapping or specific items, they are things that we use on a regular basis to help keep our shelter spaces clean. Please feel free to bring in any of the following items to our shelter to meet this holiday giving need:

Blankets

Dish Soap

Laundry Soap/Pods

Trash Bags (13 gallon and 55 gallon)

Toilet Paper

Disinfectant

All-Purpose Cleaner

Thank you for your interest in preparing dinner(s) for the families staying at New Directions Shelter. 

Dinners are primarily needed on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

This opportunity involves preparing (or buying) and donating a well-balanced, child-friendly dinner. The meal needs to feed up to 20 people (mostly children). Food needs to be dropped off by 4:00 - 4:30 pm on the designated day. Meals are just dropped off; there is no serving involved. We do have the ability to heat/re-heat as needed. Are you available one day a week? Are you wanting to make the difference in the healing process of a sexual assault survivor? Become an advocate for sexual assault survivors today! Flexible hours for on-call shifts and respond in-person to area hospitals and law enforcement centers, provide support and resources to survivors of sexual assault. Available shifts are 5pm until 8am the next morning Monday-Friday, on Saturdays and Sundays shifts are from 8am until 8am the following day, and occasionally, 8am-5pm Monday through Friday.

Many families and individuals in our community struggle daily to secure enough food to eat. The Coralville Community Food Pantry (CCFP) works to address this issue by offering weekly food assistance to anyone in Coralville who needs it. Volunteers guiding members through the pantry, checking members in. Volunteers are encouraged to sign up for two pantry shifts a month, but no minimum or maximum is required.

Teams from different community groups organize most of our meals, and there are also slots for ad hoc volunteers from 10:30-1:30 or 11:30-1:30. Open Day (ad hoc) volunteers prepare, serve, and clean up after the meal when no pre-formed volunteer team is designated. Extra help with serving and cleaning is needed both on Open Days and on some days with pre-formed volunteer teams. 

New folks: Make sure you navigate to 1105 Gilbert COURT, (not Gilbert STREET). Park behind the building on the west side; you'll find the volunteer entrance there. Call Free Lunch Program at 319-337-6283 if you have any issues. When you arrive, we will have you review and sign our Orientation and Waiver document, which you can preview here. 

Celebrate the season by caroling with your group for the residents of Friendship Village! Times are very flexible based on what works for your group. We have several buildings and levels of care, so we are happy to take numerous groups so each resident can experience some Christmas carols at least once this season.

One-Time Service Event: Choose a date(s) and location(s) for yourself or a group of friends, family, coworkers, etc. to clean up litter in a public space, such as a neighborhood, park, or business corridor. You can conduct your cleanup just once, or repeat it a few times throughout the year. Learn more at this link.

Make a Difference in the Kitchen with Meals on Wheels!

Meals on Wheels serves our community by preparing and delivering hot, nutritious meals to clients each weekday. Volunteers play a vital role in helping us meet this mission—and we couldn’t do it without you!

Available Kitchen Opportunities:

Ingredient Preparation — 7:30/8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Assist with washing, chopping, and preparing ingredients for the day’s meals.

Assembly Line Assistance — 9:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Work alongside staff and fellow volunteers to assemble hot, nutritious meals.

Meal Packaging
Help package approximately 600 meals per day with a dedicated, friendly team.

Route Organization — Monday through Friday
Assist in organizing and staging meals for delivery to our clients.

Congregate Meals (Brownstone Café) — 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Support our community dining program by serving meals and engaging with guests.

Each of these roles offers the chance to work with a supportive team while making a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.

Join us in delivering “more than just a meal.” As a Meals on Wheels volunteer driver, you’ll provide nutritious food, a friendly visit, a safety check—and the reassurance that someone cares. Your time helps seniors remain safe and independent in their own homes.

Our dedicated volunteers deliver more than 1,000 meals each weekday across the metro area. Drivers pick up meals around 10:45 a.m. from various pick-up sites, and each route takes about one hour to complete.

Flexible Opportunities:
Our routes are both family-friendly and business-friendly. You can deliver once a week, once a month, or as your schedule allows—we’ll work with you to find a fit that works best.

Volunteer Requirements:

A current driver’s license

Your own vehicle and proof of auto insurance

Completion of a background check prior to delivering

Youth are welcome to accompany an adult driver!

Justyna Miranda, owner of City Girl Farming + Prepared Meals, has nourished our community with her delicious meals, warm friendship, and her unwavering spirit – and now she needs our help.

Very recently, she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive adrenal cancer that she is actively fighting. The City Girl Farming Team is stepping up to keep normal operations while their trusty leader is in recovery, and with this transition, we are still looking for some additional help – which is where YOU come in! 

On Mondays and Tuesdays, we are looking for a couple of volunteers to assist our kitchen crew with meal prep tasks and dish washing. It is a fun and uplifting environment at NEW LOCATION in Steeple Square (101 E 15th St, Dubuque, IA 52001). Music is always playing, interesting conversations, and laughs are being shared almost all the time and as we prepare, cook, and package that week's delicious meals. Lately, the biggest help has gone towards washing dishes.

If you're looking for a fun way to spend some volunteer hours, if you're interested in kitchen work but have never tried it, or if you're just looking to try something different for a couple hours: Sign Up Today!
