Oktoberfest is a fun family friendly event with entertainment, contests, and food! All proceeds will benefit Camp Albrecht Acres so they can provide a unique environment for people with special needs to enjoy new opportunities and challenges in a safe environment adapted specifically for their needs. 

Volunteers are needed as greeters, food service/food prep, ticket sales, game supervision, and clean up/tear down.

Use this Sign Up Genius to help at Free Lunch Program in Sept./Oct./Nov. Teams from different community groups organize most of our meals, and there are also slots for ad hoc volunteers from 10:30-1:30 or 11:45-1:30. Open Day (ad hoc) volunteers prepare, serve, and clean up after the meal when no pre-formed volunteer team is designated.

Make sure you navigate to 1105 Gilbert COURT, (not Gilbert STREET). If you're driving, park behind the building on the west side; you'll find the volunteer entrance there. If you're arriving by bike or bus, be assured that we have bike racks conveniently located in front and the Route 1 (South Iowa City) bus has several stops within a 1-block radius.

Help our clients reach their goals! As a Youth Mentor, you would be paired with a refugee between the ages of 15 and 24. You will meet 1-2 times per month on your own schedule to help them work toward their specific goals (conversational English, applying for college, etc.). 

Care for children between the ages of 0 and 4 during our Family Literacy Program!

Help one of our programs with their daily office duties. Specific information and tasks are dependent upon office needs at any given time. You can create your own schedule as long as your hours are between 8:30am and 4:30pm Monday through Friday--our regular office hours. 

Help us pick up and take inventory of donations. You can create your own schedule as long as your hours fall between 8:30am and 4:30pm Monday through Friday--our regular office hours. 

Participate in our Family Literacy Program to teach English as a second language to adults! You can choose your own role as a teacher, teaching assistant, or feel free to shadow until you are ready to commit. These classes take place at Church of Peace in Rock Island from 9am to 11:15am Mondays through Fridays for the duration of the school year. We ask that you commit to at least one day per week. This opportunity has been described as a very rewarding experience for teachers as they watch their students grow in their English proficiency! 

Help us prep and execute our monthly food pantry! Need is very high, and everyone is welcome. Our pantry takes place on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month; the first Monday's pantry is from 3:30-5pm, while the third Monday's pantry is from 8:45-11am. Our prep days are the Fridays before pantry Monday from 9:30-11am. 

We are in need of volunteers to help plan our annual Passport to the Runway Gala. Volunteers would have the option to assist with the silent auction, wine pull, registration, performances, and more! Meetings are every Friday, with times coming soon. 

Riptide Community Closet will be moving from 2211 4th St SW to Trinity United Methodist Church, and I need help!  Duties include putting equipment in totes and boxes, taking apart storage racks, loading it all in to trucks and trailers. And taking it to the Church.  We will then work on setting everything up in the new location. 

We are looking for volunteers to help with an upcoming event on Saturday, November 7th, from 9am-12pm.

Jack Splat! takes place downtown Iowa City right next to Chauncey Swan Park in the parking ramp. This is typically where the farmers market is held! This FREE community experience gives families the opportunity to give their beloved carved pumpkins one last festive send off for the season. Families can drop off their rotting jack-o-lanterns before the event, and we will throw them from the top of the parking ramp onto a target down below! There will also be a number of hands-on activities for kids to enjoy.

We need volunteers to help us with a variety of important jobs, such as pumpkin hauling, splat patrol, as well as set-up and break-down. Volunteers will get their exact assignments and specific instructions on the day of the event.

Volunteer shifts will run from the entirety of the 9am-12pm time frame. There is only one volunteer shift for this event.

It takes a dedicated team of both volunteers and museum staff to create the fun that Jack Splat! is known for, so please only volunteer for a shift you feel sure you can commit to, and let us know ASAP if you are ill or cannot make it for any reason.

The Iowa Children's Museum is putting out an open call for volunteers for our annual Move It Dig It Do It event on Sunday, October 4th. This event runs from 10am to 3pm and takes place in the Coral Ridge mall parking lot just outside the museum. This FREE community experience gives families the opportunity to get an up close look at cool vehicles such as a firetruck, ambulance, helicopter, garbage truck, and many many more! There will also be hands-on activities for kiddos to enjoy!

We need volunteers to help us with a variety of important jobs like: set up and tear down, greeting guests, directing traffic, and assisting with activities. Volunteers will get their exact assignments and instructions the day of the event.

We have two volunteer shifts available, but volunteers who can commit to a full day are greatly appreciated!
First Shift: 9:30am-12:45pm
Second Shift: 12:15-3:30pm

From 3–6 p.m., admission to the museum is free for everyone. As families explore the exhibits, kids can complete a special Passport to Play by stopping at activities throughout the museum and discovering different ways people play, create, and connect. This event is also a chance to learn more about the museum’s Sharing Culture Through Play initiative. Through this program, we work alongside local cultural organizations, educators, and community members to create more opportunities for families to experience and celebrate the cultures that make our community special. These collaborations bring new opportunities for families to learn and play together, both at the museum and throughout our community. Passport to Play is part of Welcoming Week, an annual celebration that brings communities together and highlights the importance of creating places where everyone belongs.

Celebrate Halloween in the gardens! We are extending our hours from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM in partnership with our neighbors at the Dubuque Arboretum and Botantical Garden hosting the Ghouls in the Gardens outdoor movie night. We need four enthusiastic volunteers to host interactive activity stations, welcome families, and help us bring this community event to life.

(Note: Regular garden admission applies to guests, but volunteers participate for free!)

We would love to have a group of volunteers come in to clean windows, do paint touch-ups, and launder the bean bag covers in our sensory room!  It's not heavy work, but we know it would make such a difference in helping our Center feel even more warm and welcoming.  

Big Brothers Big Sisters is partnering with area elementary schools to offer meaningful opportunities for community members to step into the role of a Big and experience the impact firsthand. During the lunch and recess hour, volunteers are paired with students identified by their schools as young people who would benefit from extra support, encouragement, and connection.

This year we are adding in a Unified Sports Day as part of this celebration! Unified Sports Days offer a single-day event for athletes to engage with volunteers from the community through a variety of sport skills & drills stations including football, soccer, volleyball, cornhole and more!

Volunteers will have the opportunity to engage with and create meaningful interactions with Special Olympic athletes throughout the duration of the event.

On September 11, TRAIL will join thousands of Americans in honoring the National Day of Service and Remembrance by helping older adults throughout Johnson County remain safe, independent, and connected to their communities.

From 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, teams of volunteers will complete yard and garden projects at the homes of TRAIL members who need an extra hand. Whether it's weeding flower beds, trimming shrubs, spreading mulch, raking, or tackling other seasonal outdoor tasks, every project helps create a safer and more welcoming home environment for our members.

This special afternoon of service is an opportunity to remember the spirit of unity and compassion that emerged after September 11 by putting those values into action right here in our own community.

No special gardening expertise is required—just a willingness to serve and work alongside fellow volunteers. Individuals, families, friends, neighborhood groups, civic organizations, faith communities, and workplace teams are all encouraged to participate.

In just two hours, volunteers can make a lasting difference. For many TRAIL members, outdoor maintenance has become physically difficult or impossible. A couple of hours of volunteer service not only improves the appearance and safety of a home but also provides reassurance that someone cares.

The Meals on Wheels Hydroponic Farm is a 3,000 square foot indoor farm capable of producing 20,000 pounds of leafy greens a year. Our farm provides some of our most at risk populations in the metro a source of fresh, healthy greens year-round. We also provide greens to other WesleyLife and local communities.

Are you looking for a great team-building volunteer opportunity for your work group/department, school team or group, church group, social club, or friend group? If so, we invite you to learn, work and have some fun together in the Meals on Wheels Hydroponic Farm! Individual volunteers are also greatly appreciated!

Training will be provided for every task. We do not require a background in gardening or farming, and only ask that you have an open mind and drive to help feed others. Come help us grow nutrition for those who need it most.

Volunteering at the Meals on Wheels hydroponic farm only takes place Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  

Every weekday, WesleyLife Meals on Wheels prepares and delivers nearly 2,000 hot, nutritious lunches to homebound older adults, veterans, and people living with disabilities. Our volunteers support this mission by delivering meals directly to those in need, while taking a moment to check in with our participants to make sure they are safe and well.    

In 2025, WesleyLife Meals on Wheels delivered 416,764 hot meals to older adults, veterans, and people living with physical and mental disabilities. We know that 91% of our clients report eating healthier, and 94% of our clients are able to stay independent in their own homes thanks in part to Meals on Wheels.

Thank you for your consideration to become part of the Meals on Wheels Friendly Caller Program! Social connection is a critical component of overall well-being – the calls you make help form a network of support around our most vulnerable participants.

A Friendly Caller like you allows Meals on Wheels to provide an added support system to participants who are isolated and often lonely. Your call may support the participant’s emotional wellbeing and give peace of mind to family members who worry about their loved ones but can’t always be with them.

You and your assigned participant can establish a regular call schedule. Calls last anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. All phone numbers are masked for privacy and security purposes.

This is a great time to become a Friendly Caller volunteer! We are matching Meals on Wheels participants with volunteers.  

We all play an important role in protecting the health, safety, and privacy of our participants, team members, and volunteers. You will receive instructions on how to make sure you're doing your part, and ongoing training can be provided upon request.

Volunteers are needed to organize our donation area and do light cleaning in our shared living spaces (living room, dining room, and kitchen). ​Volunteers would be organizing clothing, personals/toiletries, feminine hygiene products, diapers, cleaning products, school supplies, food items, and much more. We provide basic necessities every month for up to the 77 families staying in New Directions Shelter, The Home Connection, and our other housing programs.​

​This is a great project for a single person to work on, or you can sign up to bring a group (up to 10 people at a time). Volunteers should be 10 and older. Youth 10-14 years of age should have an adult on site with them while volunteering.

United Way of the Midlands offers a Court Referral Community Service Program (CRCSP) participants are required to check in with the CRCSP Manager before completing any community service hours.

Volunteer meal donors prepare or purchase a child-friendly dinner for up to 20-25 people and drop it off at the shelter between 4:00–4:30 pm. No serving involved — just drop and go.

On Sunday, September 20, we will be hosting a Day of Service project day at the Hitchcock House. We are seeking volunteers to help weed flower beds & trim out trees, light cleaning in the House such as windows & dusting, as well as office work like putting labels on envelopes. 

This event is for all ages & physical abilities. Tools needed will be supplied, but we do ask that you bring work gloves if you are working in the yard.

Lunch will be provided. This is a come & go event from 12:30-4 or you can stay the whole time! 

The Gathering Friendly Guest Caller is a caring volunteer who helps connect with our neighbors before meal night through friendly phone calls, meal reminders, wellness check-ins, and delivery confirmations. This role helps guests feel welcomed, remembered, and valued while building meaningful community connections across Cass County.

Friendly Guest Callers may contact guests to confirm delivery information, share meal details, check on seniors or homebound neighbors, answer basic questions, or simply provide a warm and encouraging conversation. Volunteers help create a personal connection that reminds our neighbors they are not alone.

This role is perfect for someone who enjoys talking with people, spreading kindness, listening with compassion, and helping others feel comfortable and cared for.

Our cooks do more than prepare food — they help serve kindness, dignity, and hope to every guest who walks through the doors.

The Gathering provides meal deliveries from The United Church of Christ (UCC) every other Monday to anyone who is in need of a meal.

Duties:

● Pick Up meals from The United Church of Christ (UCC) South (side) door at 1607 Hazel St. Atlantic, IA

● Load meals into vehicle and deliver meals to the clients provided

● Complete Transportation Log & amp; Reimbursement Request

Skills required:

● Must be 55 years of age or older.

● Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs (weight of the box when full of meals)

● Able to walk meals from car to the house of each individual receiving meals

Amount of Time: Approximately 1.5 hours

Time of Day: Starts between 4 & 5pm, every other Monday

·      Complete an All About Me profile form to introduce yourself to the student.

·      Write letters to the Pen Pal(s) from September to April/May.

·      Mail each letter to the teacher within a week of receiving the student’s letter. Letters come about once a month.

·      Attend the Pen Pal Meet & Greet party at your student’s school.

Amount of time: Pen Pals usually spend about a half hour to an hour writing each letter.

Expectations:

·      Follow the Pen Pals Best Practices

The purpose of our mentoring program is to increase student belonging. Meeting with community mentors helps students feel connected and empowered.

We match mentors to elementary students in kindergarten through sixth grade. As a mentor, you would meet with one assigned student once each week at school during the day for 30-45 minutes. Most often, this occurs during lunch/recess time (between 11:00-1:00). Mentors chat with students while they eat lunch and then go to a different area of the school to play board games. Mentors are expected to connect with the students personably and get to know the kids. This is not a time for academic tutoring, but rather a time for students to connect with caring, responsible adults. Games and materials will be provided. We expect mentors to dress appropriately for a school setting, to be punctual, and to communicate with us if they will be gone.

We welcome community volunteers of all ages and life stages. There are no specific knowledge or skill requirements. The school district requires all mentors to complete a district volunteer form before beginning. This includes a background check.

We typically schedule for one semester at a time in order to accommodate university schedules.

Volunteer Iowa’s AmeriCorps VISTA project strengthens organizations across the state that are working to reduce poverty and expand opportunity for Iowans. As the VISTA Member Services Coordinator (VISTA Leader), you will support VISTA members, strengthen host site relationships, and help expand Volunteer Iowa’s capacity to serve communities statewide.

In this full-time leadership role, you will guide VISTA members through their service year by coordinating pre-service onboarding, OSOT, mid-year, and end-of-service activities. Volunteer Iowa’s VISTA program is one of the longest-running in the state, with members serving in areas such as education, health, mental health, disaster services, and employment. The team is excited to welcome a new VISTA Leader for the upcoming term.

The Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman coordinates a volunteer ombudsman program, and we are actively seeking volunteers throughout the state of Iowa!  After completing initial certification training, a volunteer ombudsman in our program will make regular visits to an assigned long-term care facility to help serve as a voice for residents, talking with them about their rights, empowering them, and providing advocacy.

Our volunteers are asked to spend a minimum of 3 hours per month in their assigned facility, complete monthly reports, work with long-term care ombudsman staff at the local and state levels, and complete annual continuing education to remain certified. 

Visits to facilities are generally unannounced and can be made at any time, any day generally between the hours of 8am-8pm. For a volunteer who may wish to make an impact but not wish/be able to make visits to facilities, there are more administrative volunteer opportunities available on an individualized basis.

Our Northeast Area Bowling Event is scheduled at Cadillac XBC in Waterloo on Saturday October 17th from 9:15am-3:00pm. We are in need of volunteers to help in several different areas and would love to assist you with getting involved! Our volunteers support our athletes by writing down scores, encouraging athletes, running the score system, helping with ramps and handing out awards.

Siena Francis House has 50 tiny homes for previously homeless individuals. Some of our tiny homes need a refresh before the dawn of winter. Help us power wash the exterior of our tiny homes! 

We would like volunteers to help clean up the cubicles on the 2nd floor so we can use them again. Legal Aid of Nebraska will provide cleaning supplies and any tools needed.

This volunteer opportunity will allow more staff members to have space to provide civil legal services to low income Nebraskans. This is a project that we’ve been meaning to do, but have not had the time or capacity to complete. Volunteers from the United Way of the Midlands would allow us to better help those who need assistance.

Come spend the day with Habitat for Humanity of Council Bluffs! You will be working on an active construction site under the supervision of HFHCB construction staff. Tasks included may included exterior painting, attic insulation, site clean-up or etc.  Please be prepared for the weather and wear clothes/shoes compatible with messy work. Outlook Enrichment is seeking bike captains to partner with our tandem bike club riders who have vision loss. Ride lengths vary, but are often 10 miles. The Corporate Cycling Challenge has 10, 25, and 42-mile options.

Anita T&C is organizing a community service project to recognize and thank our local veterans and emergency service personal for their dedication, sacrifice and commitment to keeping our community safe. 

Seasonal Touch Volunteers will use seasonal decor to decorate the library for the appropriate time of year. We generally like to decorate for Christmas (by Thanksgiving) and summer (to coordinate with the theme) but are open to more possibilities with volunteers who have an eye for this type of work. The seasonal touch volunteers should make a plan and agree upon a time to work during regular library hours.

Read It Volunteers will read and straighten shelves to help make it easier for everyone to find the book they want. Shelf reading is making sure that items are shelved in the right place. Once you’ve completed shelf reading training, you can volunteer at your convenience whenever the library is open. We recommend volunteering at least once a month in order to keep your shelf reading skills sharp.

Clean Team Volunteers learn how to clean shelves, computers, desks, and anything else that needs an occasional cleaning. Once you’ve completed training on how to complete the task and where to find all the supplies, you can work as a Clean Team Volunteer whenever it’s convenient for you during regular library hours.

The Atlantic Public Library is looking for Green Thumb Volunteers. These volunteers will care for plants in and around the library on a rotating schedule. We welcome interest from individuals as well as families or other small groups. Once a schedule is set and you know what to do, Green Thumb Volunteers can come work whenever the library is open.

The library is looking for someone who can assist with basic maintenance at the library. This would be “home handyman” type things (like wall paint touch-ups) that falls outside of the scope of library work but doesn’t require the expertise to call in a professional service like a plumber or electrician. It’s a great opportunity to contribute to the library in an unexpected way.

Do you enjoy planning layouts for printed marketing materials like flyers, bookmarks, and brochures? Put your skills to work to help your local library. The marketing assistant will work with the director to identify projects and create timelines for production. We especially need help preparing materials for the summer library program (March-May) and crafting the annual report (October-November).This is a great way to create a portfolio of work while bringing awareness of library services to the community. The Atlantic Public Library is working with the Anita and Griswold libraries to assemble (and later distribute) personal hygiene kits. We need volunteers for the following times:

Tuesday, September 15 at 10:30 am to sort donations and set-up packing stations

Tuesday, September 15 at 5:00 pm to pack kits.

Wednesday, September 16 We need a driver or two to shift any left-over supplies from Tuesday between the three libraries so more kits can get packed.

Wednesday, September 16 at 3:00 pm to finish packing kits.

Please contact the library to indicate when you're able to volunteer. This is a good opportunity for groups or families to do together. Children are welcome to participate with a parent or other supervising adult.

• Help maintain and beautify community gardens and urban farm spaces
• Design and install pollinator gardens, shade trees, and community gathering spaces
• Support food pantry donation gardens that help feed local families
• Expand access to gardens for new community members
• Recruit and work alongside volunteers
• Plan educational workshops and community events

We are looking for an adult or older teen to lead a sidewalk chalk activity on the sidewalk outside of the art center to keep younger attendees of the Rooted Table, Centrally Rooted's annual dinner occupied while people are being seated. Potential volunteers do not need to stay for the whole dinner, but arrive about 15 minutes before the start of the event and stay until everyone is seated with their meal.

Our East Central Area Bowling Event is scheduled at Cedar Rapids Bowling Center in Cedar Rapids on Saturday October 10th from 9:00am-2:00pm. We are in need of volunteers to help in several different areas and would love to assist you with getting involved! Our volunteers support our athletes by writing down scores, encouraging athletes, running the score system, helping with ramps and handing out awards.
