Opportunities From: Volunteer Iowa

Volunteer: Future City Iowa - Regional Competition Volunteers

Future City Iowa is looking for volunteers to help with the Regional Competition and there are lots of ways to get involved!

Volunteer roles:

1.  Virtual City Essay Judge: reads a number of City Essay deliverables and scores them based on the rubric. Judging is done virtually the Saturday before the in-person competition.

2.  City Model, Presentation, and Q&A Judge: checks a number of City Model deliverables and scores them based on the rubric, watches team presentations during the in-person competition, and scores them based on the rubric, meet with team to ask questions about engineering, the challenge theme, teamwork, and the team's future city.

2.  Special Award Judge: some businesses and organizations sponsor a “Special Award” to highlight excellence for part of the overall project during the in-person competition. These judges are typically provided by the sponsoring entity, but for nationally sponsored awards, like the NCEES surveying award and PMI project management award, we may be looking for local judges. If your business or organization is interested in sponsoring a special award, or you’d like to learn more about how to get involved in this way, please reach out to k12@newbo.co

For all of these Future City volunteer roles, we are looking for adults who are willing to support middle school students in exploring STEM careers. Training and rubrics will be provided for volunteers where necessary, and this is also a great opportunity for team building as volunteers can be grouped together.

Volunteer: Girls Who Code Mentor: 3rd - 5th grade

We have two clubs that run twice per school year for 10 weeks. For the 3rd–5th grade club, facilitators will have students do a sisterhood activity (ice breaker) and introduce a coding concept or show an example project to teach them something. They may also share a bit about their own career. Mentors can also share about their careers, and will focus on helping the students as they work on their projects. Students in this club primarily use Scratch or LEGO Spike Prime robots for their projects. Volunteers do not need to help at every club meeting, but we are able to increase capacity with more volunteers.

Volunteer: Girls Who Code Mentor: 6th - 12h grade

We have two clubs that run twice per school year for 10 weeks.  For the 6th–12th grade club, facilitators will help kick off the club meetings, and may teach concepts that provide a foundation for their projects. Facilitators and mentors will help answer questions during work time, take project teams to visit their business “clients,” help students think through their project ideas, and help install projects as necessary. The fall club focuses on a holiday light installation showcase that happens on the last day of the session. The student teams partner with NewBo District businesses to design, create, and install programmable LED projects. Volunteers do not have to be present at each of the club meetings, but we appreciate any time volunteers can provide to help students with skills around project management, design ideas/aesthetics, programming, team work, and safety moving around the neighborhood. We also hope to have a second project option for returning students where a subset of the older club will learn how to add a sensor to our existing Raspberry Pi Pico “light boxes.” For this project, it would be helpful to have people familiar with electronics, circuits, and prototyping. Skills around electrical engineering, platform development, prototyping, and testing are appreciated.

Volunteer: Riders Club: On Call from Home

"Riders Club answering service.  Are you calling about a ride which has already been scheduled?"

Riders Club is the car someone no longer drives.

Riders and drivers can be active 24/7 which means there are times they cannot find each other.  Since the office is only open for scheduling from 9 am to 3 pm, Monday through Friday, we need someone to answer the phone outside office hours and on Holidays.

Work from any location that has a phone to help drivers, riders and the office!  Our phone system allows us to forward phones to any number.  We can even adjust the call destination remotely!

Our Ride Management System (RCA RMS) gives you all the information to help others get back on track.

You will need web access and a computer.  Printing out the master manifest allows you to be mobile without using the internet on your mobile phone.  A common evening involves 0 to 5 phone calls.

Helpful skills include:

phone communication, comfort with simple computer usage, and some knowledge of local roads.

Help from home!  and make a huge difference in other people's lives.

Volunteer: Riders Club: Come Drive With Us!

Do you like people?  Do you like to drive?  If both of these are true, we might have an opportunity for you!

Riders Club is the car someone no longer drives. We do this by coordinating volunteer drivers with those in need to provide a low cost transportation option in the Cedar Rapids area.

Rides are available 24-7 and the office is open Monday through Friday, 9 am to 3 pm. Let us know when you are available and we will set up rides according to your availability!

Come drive with us!

Drivers must like driving and seniors.  Drivers must have a valid Drivers License and use their own vehicle. System and field training takes about 90 minutes, and then manifests can be accessed via the Internet. We do a background check on all drivers and riders.

Volunteer: Duck Derby Event Weekend Volunteer Help Needed

Duck Derby Volunteer Description
Riverview Center’s annual Duck Derby is one of our biggest and most exciting fundraisers of the year! Thousands of rubber ducks will race down the river, with lucky winners receiving great prizes—all while raising vital funds to support survivors of sexual and domestic violence in our community.

We rely on volunteers to make this fun, family-friendly event possible. Volunteer opportunities include:

Morning Setup Shift (Oct. 11-12, 8:30–11:00 AM) – Meet at the Galena office at 8:30 AM. Volunteers will help transport ducks, tables, and chairs to the park and set up all tables for the day.

Mid-Shifts (Oct. 11–12, 11:00 AM–1:00 PM) – Mid-shifts pick up where the previous shift left off and carry on until the next shift arrives. Tasks may include running the tables, assisting runners, helping with set-up or organizing supplies, or other tasks to keep the event running smoothly.

Table 1 and Table 2 Shifts (Oct. 11–12) – All table assignments consist of sitting or standing near a table (chairs provided) and asking passersby if they would like to participate in the Duck Derby by purchasing a duck. Volunteers at each table work together to ensure shifts are covered and breaks are taken as needed.

Table 1 is located on the bridge landing. This is our busiest spot with lots of foot traffic!

Table 2 is on the far side of the park, right in the heart of the festival near food and craft vendors.

Runners (Oct. 11–12) – Perfect for someone who doesn’t want to be tied to a table. Runners go between both tables to support volunteers as needed—collecting tickets, delivering more ducks, and helping with other quick tasks to keep everything running smoothly.

Last Table Shift – Saturday (Oct. 11, 3:30–5:00 PM) – Responsible for taking down tables and chairs and putting them away (storage location TBD). Bring ducks, tickets, and money to Table 1 and assist with clean-up, loading, and transporting items back to the Galena office as needed.

Last Table Shift – Sunday (Oct. 12, 1:00–3:30 PM) – Continue with duck sales until 2:30 PM. Gather all items, take down tables/chairs, take money, tables, chairs, tickets, and unsold ducks to Table 1. Deliver sold ducks to the bridge and assist with the Duck Drop at 3:00 PM, then help with tear-down and clean-up.

Duck Drop Volunteers (Oct. 12, 2:30–4:00 PM) – Meet on the bridge at 2:30 PM to prepare for the big race! The runner will have collected all tickets and sold ducks ahead of time. Together, the team ties the red tarp to the bridge to create a pocket, carefully places the ducks inside, and waits for the 3:00 PM countdown to release them into the river.

This role requires strength, but with at least 10 people on the bridge (including those working the 1:00–3:30 PM table shift), the work is manageable.

After the drop, bridge volunteers assist with teardown, clean-up, and collecting ducks from the river.

The bridge is a great spot for groups to volunteer—athletic teams, student groups, or clubs looking for a fun way to give back are especially encouraged to sign up.

Whether you can give a couple of hours or a whole day or both days, your support helps us make a big splash for survivors!

Volunteer: Become A Big (Mentor)

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley (BBBSMV) has an urgent need for mentors — especially male mentors — with more than 200 local youth currently waiting for a Big. Our one-on-one mentoring programs connect caring adult volunteers with area youth, creating meaningful relationships that empower young people to reach their full potential.

BBBSMV provides mentoring environments that meet the needs of our Littles (youth) while offering flexibility for our Bigs (volunteers). Each Big Brothers Big Sisters match is thoughtfully planned to ensure compatibility, safety, and success, creating positive and memorable experiences for everyone involved.

Community-Based Program
Bigs and Littles meet out in the community, usually on evenings or weekends. Spending 6–10 hours per month together, matches explore the Quad Cities, enjoy free or low-cost activities, and try new things while building a lasting friendship.

School-Based Plus Program
Bigs meet with their Littles at a local elementary school, typically during the lunch or recess hour. About once a week, matches can share lunch, play games, read, work on projects, or enjoy recess together.

BBBSMV also offers monthly group activities for all Bigs and Littles — from developmentally focused outings for elementary students to Big Futures events that support career exploration and post–high school planning for middle and high school youth.

Volunteer: JA Finance Park (Benton Community Schools)

JA Finance Park® Mobile is a 3-4-hour immersive experience for middle school students. During the simulation, students will be assigned a hypothetical life scenario, including a career, spouse, children, and pets. Throughout the simulation, they will ‘research’ different budget categories through a series of volunteer-led group discussions and activities, and will create a budget based on their household income and needs. Then, they will shop through their budget to see how their ideal finances measure up to real world costs. Volunteers support small groups of students (4-7) as they create, edit, and shop through their budgets. All discussion and activity materials are provided, and volunteers can share their real world experiences to help students understand different financial commitments they will have as they grow up. Volunteer orientation is provided morning of the simulation, and no previous expertise is required

Volunteer: MBF Child Safety Matters Volunteer

Volunteers help present safety lessons to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Individuals must be comfortable speaking to children in their classrooms about topics such as: all kinds of abuse, bullying, cyberbullying, digital dangers, and digital safety.

Volunteers who have experience working with children in the classroom setting are preferred, though volunteers of all backgrounds are accepted. Volunteers should be available Monday-Friday from 8AM-3PM (some point during that time frame). Access to video recording & sharing is preferred as well but not required.

Training is comprehensive and vigorous due to the nature of the subject matter. Volunteers are requested to commit to programming for a minimum of one year because of the extensive training and staff time involved. Volunteers for shorter duration (i.e.- university students needing thirty hours field experience) are accepted on a case by case basis.

A minimum of three presentations per week (about six hours total per week) is required to maintain a volunteer position. They can present the curriculum to individual classrooms at a time of their choosing. The program coordinator sends out a school schedule the week before via email, then the volunteer may select the time frames they desire to observe or present.

Volunteer: Mentoring Elementary Students

The purpose of our mentoring program is to increase student belonging. Meeting with community mentors helps students feel connected and empowered.

We match mentors to elementary students in kindergarten through sixth grade. As a mentor, you would meet with one assigned student once each week at school during the day for 30-45 minutes. Most often, this occurs during lunch/recess time (between 11:00-1:00). Mentors chat with students while they eat lunch and then go to a different area of the school to play board games. Mentors are expected to connect with the students personably and get to know the kids. This is not a time for academic tutoring, but rather a time for students to connect with caring, responsible adults. Games and materials will be provided. We expect mentors to dress appropriately for a school setting, to be punctual, and to communicate with us if they will be gone.

We welcome community volunteers of all ages and life stages. There are no specific knowledge or skill requirements. The school district requires all mentors to complete a district volunteer form before beginning. This includes a background check.

Agency: Orchard Hill Elementary School

The purpose of our mentoring program is to increase student belonging. Meeting with community mentors helps students feel connected and empowered.

We match mentors to elementary students in kindergarten through sixth grade. As a mentor, you would meet with one assigned student once each week at school during the day for 30-45 minutes. Most often, this occurs during lunch/recess time (between 11:00-1:00). Mentors chat with students while they eat lunch and then go to a different area of the school to play board games. Mentors are expected to connect with the students personably and get to know the kids.
