(Mon. to Fri.; 11:20 AM to 12:30 PM). This is a simple and fun way for you to make a difference! As an individual or a small group of 2-4 people, it takes about an hour of your time to serve hot, nutritious meals to the tables where our older adults are gathered for lunch. Our process is for volunteer teams to sign up for a single date and then consider the possibility of an ongoing commitment (monthly, quarterly, or as it fits your schedule).

Call to Action Philanthropies is a 501(c)(3) operating foundation that owns and operates affordable multifamily housing communities across Utah, Iowa, and Nevada. In addition to providing stable housing, we support residents through essential services focused on food security, utilities, and basic needs.

We are seeking volunteers to support a small onsite food pantry at one of our affordable senior housing communities located at 2501 W 53rd St, Davenport, IA 52806. This pantry helps residents access nutritious food in a respectful, welcoming environment.

When:

Every 2nd Wednesday of the month

Flexible shifts anytime between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM

Volunteers can commit to a few hours—no need to stay all day

What Volunteers Do:
Volunteers assist with light, hands-on support before, during, and after pantry hours, including:

Helping receive deliveries and set up the pantry space

Organizing food by category and checking expiration dates

Setting up tables, signage, and shopping lists

Greeting residents and assisting with check-in

Light restocking during open hours

Tidying the space and breaking down boxes at the end of the day

(Tasks are shared among volunteers and staff; no heavy lifting is required, and accommodations can be made as needed.)

Your time helps ensure the pantry runs smoothly and with dignity, and it makes a real difference for residents in the community.

Do you have about 90 minutes you could spare once a month or so?  (That includes time driving to and from our office!)  The American Red Cross needs a few strong-ish individuals or an existing group or club to come over to our office at 1100 River Drive in Moline to help us set up our local community blood drives.  We use a classroom for our blood drives so we need to move the tables and chairs out of the way so our blood collection staff can come in and set up beds and equipment.  What do we mean by "strong-ish"?  If you can lift and stack 2-3 chairs at a time or lift one side of a somewhat heavy table, you're strong enough.  A group of 4 individuals could get this done in less than an hour.  2 individuals could get it done within an hour or less.  A larger group is great because you have more people to ask when the blood drives fall on different dates and times, and members of your group will have different windows of availability.  No training is required; we'll show you what we need at your first blood drive set-up.  Let us know if you can help us form our new BLOOD DRIVE SETUP CREW!  

Compeer Advisory Board members:

We are especially interested in board members with experience in (non-profit) management and an interest in helping us develop and build the organizational structures and processes that will sustain the program for the next 20 years.

Specifically, we are seeking folks with skills or experience in any of the areas listed below: 

The Compeer Program matches adults who are living with mental illness with community volunteers to create intentional friendships with the goal of reducing isolation and loneliness.

You will meet with your friend on a regular basis at mutually convenient times to share activities you both enjoy, such as movies, sports, going for walks in good weather, shopping or coffee and a chat, or many of the free activities available in the Iowa City/Johnson County area.

You and your new friend will spend about an hour together once a week (or 2 hours every two weeks). Training, ongoing education, and support are provided by the Compeer staff.

Compeer volunteers are rewarded by the knowledge that they are making a positive difference in someone’s life! Both people gain a new friend with whom to enjoy and explore different aspects of life, learn from, and grow with.

Provide occasional transportation for Compeer participants to and from social engagement events in your personal vehicle. 

Participants in need of transportation are located in Johnson County, mostly Iowa City. Transportation is usually needed once or twice a month. 

Help people within your community gain access to social engagement events that foster mental wellbeing through meaningful connections. 

Do you want to learn more about the Botanical Garden? Are you already a big fan and want to share your enthusiasm? Garden Hosts provide an additional layer of hospitality beyond the admission desk to ensure that guests have a quality experience during their visit.  No green thumb is needed (you aren’t expected to know every plant here) just an interest in learning how to help someone enjoy their experience when they visit. The Botanical Artisan Guild is looking for a volunteer to help develop and coordinate a project to make block printing art to support the Guild.  

This person will be responsible for organizing regularly scheduled sessions with interested volunteers for training, carving and printing.  Additionally, they will be responsible for developing ideas for relief printing products, organizing tools and supplies and communicating with volunteers.   

Successful candidates should have the following qualifications:

--Enjoy working with others to create art that can be sold in the Garden Shop

--Experience in block printing either from school or home hobby projects

--Be willing to train others in the skills of linocut carving and relief printing on paper and fabric

--Availability during daytime hours

The Botanical Artisans Guild is a group of volunteers who create arts and crafts to sell in the garden shop.  Their inspiration comes from the plants and gardens at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden.

The Admission Desk and Garden Shop Assistant provides high quality guest experience and promotes Botanical Garden activities, events, membership and more. We have brought on our first two nurses and now, we are excited to expand this opportunity to more nurses: If you are an RN or LPN with a current professional license, the American Red Cross is eager to talk with you about an incredible volunteer opportunity at the Woodson Health Clinic at the Rock Island Arsenal.  Join a tradition of Red Cross nurses going all the way back to our founder, Clara Barton, by providing excellent patient care at a family clinic for our US Army personnel at the Arsenal.  The time commitment is minimal: If you can work one 5-hour shift per week, you will help meet the needs of the patients who rely on the clinic. This is an ideal opportunity for retired nurses or nurses who are working part-time.  If you want to give back to our military service members and continue to hone your clinical skills, we want to meet you and see if this is a great mutual fit.  Volunteers would work under the supervision of the officer-in-charge at the clinic, who is a Family Nurse Practitioner.   

MFC has teen nights on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3pm - 7pm. We are looking for volunteers to help cook dinner and engage with our teens! 

Volunteers will need to complete a background check before volunteering. 

Encampment to Housed is an innovative initiative designed to provide rapid, person-centered intervention for individuals living in encampments in Waterloo. FOF staff will work to house individuals to ensure our vision of everyone has a home. Volunteers will support this project after individuals are housed. They will help to ensure individuals have gotten their belongings out of the encampment and begin to clean up the encampment.

Tasks include: 

This project is in partnership with the City of Waterloo. Volunteers will lead the encampment clean up efforts to promote safety, public health and fostering trust within our communities. 

Friends of West Des Moines Parks and Recreation Board Member Opportunity

As a board member, you'll collaborate with dedicated individuals to support and enhance our parks and recreation programs, expand community outreach, and drive membership growth. We are looking for motivated individuals with leadership goals, a collaborative spirit, and a commitment to making a positive impact.

Monthly Meetings: Board members meet once a month for approximately 60 minutes on the 3rd Tuesday from 5:30–6:30 p.m.

Committee Engagement: Expect approximately 3–4 hours per month per committee you join. Committee meetings provide working collaborative opportunities to achieve board goals between the monthly meetings.

Event Volunteering: There are additional (fully optional) opportunities to volunteer at Friends or Friends-adjacent events throughout the year, typically falling on weekends.

Regular attendance at the monthly board meetings is essential and expected for all Friends of West Des Moines Parks & Recreation board members. Maintaining consistent attendance supports collaboration and ensures progress on key projects. Your commitment to attendance directly contributes to our success and impact in the community. 

Each board member is expected to volunteer for at least one committee. The committees include Finance/Executive; Membership Management; Fundraising; Marketing & Outreach; Partnerships & Programs; and other ad-hoc or event-based committees.

The Friends of West Des Moines Parks & Recreation board is dedicated to securing financial support for our community programs and funded projects such as Legacy Woods. Board members play a vital role in ensuring the financial stability and growth of our parks and programs. Each board member’s commitment is crucial.

Each board member is expected to make a personal financial contribution within their means, most often by way of a ‘Founding Friends’ annual membership. While the amount of the contribution has an impact, the act of giving itself is significant, as it demonstrates to others in the community that board members are personally invested in the success of our parks. 

What Might I be Doing as a Board Member?

Planning and Executing Fundraising and Community Enrichment Events - Board members plan for several events throughout each year, including Friends fundraisers, community engagement, and environmental and conservation efforts.

Finding Opportunities to Support the West Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department - The city-managed department has ample volunteer opportunities throughout its seasonal event programming. Board members will often support the Parks and Recreation department via arranging sponsorships or simply volunteering their time.

Growing Awareness and Membership for the Friends - The Friends of WDM Parks and Rec organization has a big dream to make the West Des Moines Parks system the best it can be. Growing awareness of the Friends and its mission, and finding ways to add new ‘Friends’ as members is a frequent goal and task.

Identifying Funding Sources and Seeking Contributions - Each board member also helps identify potential funding sources for Friends of WDM Parks & Rec. Your knowledge of the community and connections will support the development of a robust financial support program. Board members should be willing to ask for contributions, as part of a coordinated effort led by the board to ensure we meet our funding goals.

Are There Any Special Skill Sets Needed?

If you have experience in grant writing, marketing, finance, accounting, law, event planning, volunteer board strategic planning, and/or are passionate about enhancing community spaces for West Des Moines residents, we invite you to consider joining our board. Terms begin in March and extend for three years.

We’re inviting community members to host a monthly Birthday Bash so every resident can feel celebrated. Many of our residents face financial barriers or don’t have family to celebrate with, and this is a meaningful way to show them they are valued! To host a Birthday Bash, you can either provide 80 pieces of cake or cupcakes or make a $60 contribution for us to purchase the cake. You’re also welcome to bring party decorations to help make it feel festive. Upon arrival, you and a group of up to five can help decorate, serve cake, and connect with residents. Party games like Bingo are encouraged, we’ll provide the bingo set if you can provide 8–10 prizes ($5–$10 each). Birthday Bashes can be held Mondays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Through our #MoreThanAMeal program, volunteers help provide a hearty, home-cooked meal for all 140 residents while creating a sense of community that truly makes our campus feel like home.

A $300 sponsorship helps cover the cost of the meal. You and your group (6-8 people) will prepare and serve dinner, then sit down to share the meal and connect with residents. Volunteers consistently share that this is one of the most impactful experiences on our campus.

Bingo and Trivia is a great way to directly connect with our residents and our cause! Often times, an individual or small group will host the bingo night and bring in between 8 – 10 small prizes (ranging in the 5-10 dollar range) and one prize for the blackout round (around the 20 dollar price point). We will provide the bingo set and even bake up some delicious cookies for your bingo night! Popular prizes are things like towel sets, household cleaning items, pots and pans or décor items that residents can use to personalize their apartments!

Create Change with Clean Clothing:

Clean clothing is a basic human need. While we have on-site laundry, many residents can’t afford the quarters needed for a wash and dry. One load costs 12 quarters. Our goal is for every resident to have access to a laundry kit (12 quarters, a pod, and a dryer sheet) when needed. Consider hosting a spare change drive at work, with friends, or through a school or sports team.

Fill Our Pantry:

Gather friends, neighbors, or coworkers to host a food, clothing, or hygiene drive for our 140 residents. For current needs, visit our Amazon wish list.

Set a New Resident Up for Success:

When residents move in, they receive a welcome basket with essential household items. We’re currently running low and would appreciate donations of basic kitchen, bathroom, and cleaning supplies to help make their first day feel like home.

Volunteering at the DMARC-Ket Food Pantry is just like helping a friend shop for groceries! As a food pantry volunteer, you will assist visitors in selecting their food items after they have gone through the intake process. We also need folks to break down our food rescue items and keep our shelves stocked throughout the day!

Requirements:

Volunteers will be provided with instructions and ongoing guidance from a DMARC staff person for the duration of their shift. Please arrive 10 minutes prior to your shift for direction. 

 Qualifications:

Possess a passion and enthusiasm for assisting individuals and families in crisis. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while under pressure. Ability to bend, squat and frequently lift items up to 35 pounds. We can make reasonable accommodations whenever possible!

The Corporate Leadership Cabinet is a network of community-minded business leaders who support DMARC through strategic partnerships, resource sharing, and community engagement. Members act as ambassadors within their sectors to raise awareness of DMARC’s mission, contribute financially or in-kind, and help open doors to new opportunities.

Activities include:

Ideal for: Professionals and executives who want to lend their influence to reduce food insecurity in Greater Des Moines.

This committee will help plan the 8th annual Spring Greens event, DMARC’s signature fundraising event. This year’s event will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the DMARC Food Pantry Network. Areas of focus include sponsorship, ticket sales, communications, logistics, raffle, logistics, communications.

Date: April 30th, 2026 at DMARC’s headquarters, 100 Army Post Rd., Des Moines.

Subcommittees include: 

Sponsorship – Secure financial sponsors and help meet revenue goals. 

Raffle – Source a high-value raffle item and coordinate raffle sales and promotion. 

Logistics – Coordinate event setup, managing timelines and  volunteers. 

Communications & Promotions – Assist with marketing materials, social media, and press outreach. 

Decor & Design – Plan and implement the event’s decor and design.  

Pallet Project – Recruitment of organizations, clubs and faith communities to design and create a pallet project for the Spring Greens event. 

Commitment: 
Monthly meetings from October to April, with subcommittee work between meetings and hands-on help the week of the event.

Suncrest Hospice is looking for volunteers to join the Suncrest Team as we provide excellent care and support to our Hospice patients and their families in their home or facility.  The philosophy of hospice care is to provide comfort and the highest quality of life that one can achieve at the end of life. Through an interdisciplinary team: nurse, home health aide, social worker, Chaplin, music therapist, massage therapists and volunteers, we help the patient and family walk through their journey. Whether you are needing community service hours or wanting to gain some experience in the medical field or share your musical talent, we have an amazing Volunteer program. We provide Hospice education on our Google Classroom and we are only needing 4 hours in a month which you can pick and choose the dates and times you go!

We need compassionate volunteers to assist us in our facilities while family members are out of town celebrating the holidays. No one wants to alone on the holidays and you can help with your time!

Community Youth Concepts (CYC) hosts a Community Fridge at our building at 1446 MLK Jr. Parkway (Corner of MLK and Clark) to provide food and toiletries for those in need and to reduce food waste in our community.  With the refrigerator and extra shelf space we are able to accept both fresh and shelf stable items.   In addition, prepared food can also be left as long as it is in either individual or family size containers (could be zip lock bags, sealable takout containers, etc. (please, no large buffet or other serving size containers)) and labled with what it is and the date prepared. 

Food can be left directly in the fridge or shelves as appropriate and there is access 24/7.  Fridge shed is located in parking lot behind building - entrance to parking lot is off of Clark St.  For large deliveries, please contact CYC during regular business hours  for staff support.  (515 -243 4292).   Popular items that move quickly are:

The Regional Nurse Leader (RNL) is a front-line leader of the Nursing Network who partners with the local Regional Volunteer Services Officer (RVSO) to recruit health professional volunteers per regional needs. The RNL provides guidance on nursing and health matters and helps build the health professional network in the region. RNLs promote volunteer engagement and satisfaction across the business lines and work to achieve the Volunteer Services Chief Nurse Initiatives. The American Red Cross National Nursing Network is comprised of all Red Cross nurses. Nursing Network leaders recruit and support nurses and other health professionals across all business lines to implement strategic goals of the American Red Cross as articulated in the Chief Nurse Initiatives. The American Red Cross provides 40% of the blood supply to the country. The Biomedical volunteers are a critical element to carrying out our mission, their experience and onboard is vital to volunteer growth.

Cedar Rock State Park (a 40-minute drive from Waterloo) and the Friends of Cedar Rock (a nonprofit that supports the Walter House) are looking for a volunteer teacher to possibly lead three two-or-three-hour summer camps (May—August 2026). The ideal would be a summer camp for elementary-aged children, middle school, and high school. We are looking for volunteers to help plan, design, and lead these summer camps for 2026. 

Cedar Rock State park preserves the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Lowell Walter Residence. The Usonian-style house was constructed on a bank of the Wapsipinicon River near Quasqueton, Iowa, in 1950. Frank Lloyd Wright is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most famous architects of all time. He designed eight of the 26 UNESCO World Heritage sites in the United States. The Walter House is on the National Register of Historic Places in Iowa. It is a very distinct house in the Frank Lloyd Wright world because it is one of only 25 Wright dwellings with his signature block, which was Wright’s way to communicate a house of noteworthy dissection. We would like these three summer camps to focus on architecture and nature (as Frank Lloyd Wright's style of architecture—called organic architecture—was to build homes that connected/integrated with nature). Dr. Laura Porter, Executive Director of the Iowa Architectural Foundation, is willing to share a curriculum they use for 5-day youth camps in Des Moines to make architecture alive, real, and exciting to youth. Their curriculum is for 8th and 9th graders.

Camp Wapsie uses a lot of firewood for campfires. We are seeking volunteers who can bring their own chainsaw and help cut down dying trees or cut up down trees for firewood. We will fell most trees that are near buildings or in more dangerous spots. We also have a splitter volunteers can use to split wood. Volunteers must be fairly active as this is a somewhat physical activity. Volunteers fill out a Voluntary Disclosure form if they are here when we have guests in camp.

Camp Wapsie has several areas that could use some painting updates. We are seeking volunteers who can help us painting some walls, benches, signs and other areas around camp. Purpose: To assist management team in day to day activities in running retail thrift store, providing customers with needed merchandise, in support of the SSVP mission.

Essential Duties and Roles:

Organize and distribute merchandise for sale on the retail floor for display and pricing.

Respond to customers' needs at the receiving dock, assisting with lifting donated or purchased items (up to 30 pounds). Assist drivers with unloading large and heavy items.

Light dusting and sweeping. Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of the store.

Making lunches: Teams of 6-12 volunteers will make up to 300 sack lunches per day, with up to 150 lunches handed out to homeless neighbors and 150 lunches delivered to nearby, low-income, "senior-living" apartments.

Duties include making and bagging meat sandwiches, snacks, vegetables, etc. Volunteers will clean up utensils, tables and floors.

Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 11:30 am.

Commitment to one shift a week is preferred, but not required. 

Many jobs can be accomplished by sitting, although some standing and lifting may be involved.

Compliance with health guidelines and respectful workplace policies, required.

Distributing lunches: One or two individuals to greet and hand out bagged lunches and drinks for up to 150 homeless neighbors from designated "yellow" door.

Our preschool consists of a 3-year-old room and a 4-year-old room, where children not only prepare for school but also develop essential English language skills. Our Preschool also serves as an additional summer support while their parents attend ELL (English Language Learner) classes. The Historic Preservation Commission identifies, promotes and safeguards Dubuque’s historical, cultural, environmental and aesthetic resources for enjoyment of the community. Staff support the Commission with exterior design review; evaluation, nomination and registration of historic properties; and public outreach. The historic preservation program is a critical economic development tool for Dubuque and the Commission plays an important role. Meetings are held at 5:30pm on the third Thursday of each month at the Historic Federal Building. Members are appointed to 3 year terms. Members must live within Dubuque city limits.

The RSVP Youth Reading volunteer will provide reading help and companionship to elementary students.

Program description

Reading is a critical skill for life. To help students achieve their full potential with reading skills, the RSVP Youth Reading Program is asking for volunteers to aid in small reading groups. Volunteers will be asked to follow teachers’ detailed instructions with a small group of students and engage in reading activities.

Duties:

●      Interact with elementary students and be a welcoming adult face.

●      Provide help with reading as needed.

●      Protect the privacy and confidentiality of students and their families.

Skills required:

●      Must be 55 years of age or better.

●      Relate well to staff, volunteers and children, and work with a team approach.

Program description: Education provides critical skills for life. To help students achieve their full potential, the Turnbull Child Development Center is seeking volunteers to aid in classroom activities, assisting children ages 1-12 and their teachers with playtime and other classroom activities. Volunteers will be asked to follow teachers’ instructions while working with children and assist the teacher with preparation and other classroom activities.

The Turnbull Child Development Center provides nurturing, high quality early childhood development and care.

This volunteer position ROCKS! RSVP Infant Companions spend special time with infants by rocking, reading and interacting one-on-one. 

The infant room is fully staffed with dedicated teachers who supervise and take care of all the basic needs (read: they change the diapers). The volunteer’s role is to supplement that care by spreading a little extra joy through their interactions with the infants.

Studies show that positive, one-on-one social interaction contributes to infant brain, physical and language development and helps them build trust and confidence. You are a part of that healthy development! (and it’s good for YOU, too)

Duties:

●      Interact with infants by rocking, reading and talking with them

●      Practice safe sleep methods by placing infants on their backs to sleep

Program description:  The Restored Depot and WWII Veteran’s Museum offers two volunteer opportunities including greeting museum visitors and helping them to enjoy the museum to the fullest; Flower Garden Assistant during Spring/Summer/Fall - assisting with weeding and care of outdoor flower beds.  Training is available to help you be better informed about the Depot and the Museum so that you can provide visitors with an educational experience.  Depending on volunteers’ area of interest help is needed with database input for collections, research for local history or artifacts, assisting with exhibits – research, labeling, arranging, etc.  There are also opportunities to assist with special events.

The RSVP MakerSpace Classroom Volunteer will provide hands-on project assistance and companionship to elementary students in grades K-8.

Program description: At our school, MakerSpace takes on a unique and meaningful approach. Rather than following the traditional model, our K–8 students come together in multi-age groups to explore hands-on spaces that inspire lifelong hobbies, trades, and passions. Each space is designed to connect real-world skills with classroom learning, fostering creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.  For example, students in the Cooking and Baking Space put their math and literacy skills into action — measuring ingredients, working with fractions, and following recipes — all while experiencing the joy of creating something delicious from scratch.

Volunteers play a vital role in our MakerSpace program. They help nurture curiosity and perseverance by guiding students through projects, encouraging problem-solving, and sharing their own interests and expertise. Our goal is to cultivate a love of learning that extends far beyond the classroom and lasts a lifetime.

By supplementing museum staff without receiving direct remuneration, volunteers enable the Museum & Aquarium to expand our services to the public, to further research and develop operations, and to project and maintain our positive image in the community.

The Blacksmith/Maintenance/Skilled volunteer (Boat Shop) is located in the boat shop or blacksmith shop in the Mississippi River Discovery Center. This is a group of volunteers that get together on Thursday mornings to help with electrical, woodworking, blacksmithing, building, and repairing projects for the Museum & Aquarium. If you like to work with your hands, have a skill that you would like to utilize or have wanting to learn a skill, this is the position for you!

Blacksmith/Maintenance/Skilled volunteers are needed 2 days a week (days may change) currently each Thursday morning but we are looking at adding skilled volunteers on Saturdays and Sundays, once trained. (The Museum & Aquarium requires at least 10 hours per year to remain an active volunteer). Volunteers must be 18+ years to volunteer for this position. Active volunteers will earn the following benefits:

Help steward outdoor natural resource spaces including native woodland and prairie. Volunteers help with the management of woodlands and prairie across 131 acres. Activities include removing invasive species, moving fallen branches, assisting with prescribed burning, keeping hiking trails clear, and other outdoor activities.

Help maintain an outdoor garden space of important research value. Volunteers help with the management of permanent plantings and plots involved with the Trial Program. Activities include weeding, planting, potting, mulching, cut-backs, or other gardening activities.

Foster care provides a temporary home that helps RAGOM determine a dog’s needs in a forever home. A foster home also provides the adoptive family with helpful information about the dog to ease transition and ensure a successful adoption. Foster families understand some dogs may have behaviors not typical of a Golden Retriever.
