Adults enroll in the DMACC Adult Literacy Center to become more independent in the world of words, to get a better job, earn a high school diploma, and speak and understand English better. Volunteers meet with their assigned student at the DMACC Urban Campus or at an area library.

Roots Capoeira is searching for board members with fundraising/grant writing experience.  Our goal is to write our first grants for our summer camp, teen ambassador program, and executive director position.

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who are interested in working alongside our Cultural and Intensive English Program to provide additional support to international language learners. 

Volunteers would be matched depending on availability and other information with a student in the CIEP Program that has noted a need or want for additional support either in reading, writing, listening, or speaking. Volunteers would be assigned to meet with their designated student for at least one hour per week (possible more) dependent on the students needs.

The mission of Girl Scouts is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa (GSGI) serves over 13,000 members in Iowa and portions of Nebraska and South Dakota.

GSGI is seeking individuals interested in joining our Board of Directors starting in April 2025. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: monitoring organization impact, financial oversight, governing CEO, and advising staff in areas of expertise. Directors are also invited to join smaller working committees.

Whether you have formal experience as a teacher or have a passion/hobby to share, we’d love to hear from you! Some topics may include: gardening, discussion of current events, crafts, technology (using a smart phone), and more.

As an individual or a small group of 2-4 people, it takes about an hour of your time to serve hot, nutritious meals to the tables where our older adults are gathered for lunch. Our process is for volunteer teams to sign up for a single date and then consider the possibility of an ongoing commitment (monthly, quarterly, or as it fits your schedule).

One of our greatest needs at Ronald McDonald House is for home-cooked meals for our families. After a long day at the hospital, families are truly grateful for a hot meal waiting for them. This is an ideal volunteer opportunity for groups of family, friends, corporate teams, or teens looking to fulfill community service or Silver Cord hours. We have two Houses where you can volunteer: our House near Blank Children’s Hospital and our House within MercyOne (located on the North Side, 4th Floor).

FAQ

How many people can participate in our group?
We limit groups to 10 people due to kitchen size. For groups larger than 10, we suggest splitting up: 10 people can cook, and the rest can assist with housekeeping.

What do we need to bring?
We provide all cooking tools and utensils. You’ll just need to bring the ingredients. You’re also welcome to use any canned or dry goods we have available. Feel free to call us to check what’s on hand. *Please keep in mind, Per RMH Global Guidelines, we cannot accept homemade food prepared outside a licensed kitchen.

How much food should we make?
Please prepare a meal for 35 people for each House. If you sign up to make a meal for both Houses we ask you make a meal for 70 people.
To keep a consistent schedule, we ask that meals be ready by 6 p.m.

What time should we arrive?
The volunteer kitchen is reserved from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you’d like to come earlier, please call ahead to confirm kitchen availability.

Can we stay and visit with families?
You’re welcome to stay and visit with families during the meal. However, many families return later in the evening, so we leave the meal out for an hour and then store it as leftovers.

What should we make?
Feel free to be creative and have fun with your meal! There’s no need to worry about dietary restrictions.

The Ronald McDonald House is looking for dedicated volunteers to assist with our weekly housekeeping. Our team relies on weekly or biweekly House Helpers to help our families feel at home while they’re with us.

About the Role
As a House Helper, you’ll assist with various needs, including cleaning, laundry, room preparation, administrative tasks, and more. Volunteers may be asked to help with a range of tasks depending on the House’s needs during your shift, such as packing lunches, organizing donations, preparing evening meals, and supporting admissions.

If you have a specific skill, such as carpentry or event planning, please let us know-unique opportunities may be available!

Co-Teachers only need to be able to speak English and have a desire to help new Iowans learn new skills and feel welcome. We have a lead teacher that sets the curriculum and guides everyone, co-teachers will assist anyone who needs extra help. The class is very basic and made for people of all skill levels.

Classes are the first full 3 weeks of each month on Monday and Wednesday from 10-12. No supplies needed, just yourself!

Hosting includes greeting guests, taking tickets, briefly introducing the film, and starting the film. If filmmakers are present, the host will facilitate a Q&A and after each film will record audience choice votes.  Our goal is to have 2 Venue Hosts at each screening.  Training will be provided.

Every year, hundreds of Dubuque Regional Humane Society (DRHS) volunteers help make a difference in the lives of lost, abandoned, neglected, rescued or surrendered companion animals that come through our doors. No volunteer contribution is too small or insignificant – they all help us continue our efforts as a no-kill humane society committed to rescuing, supporting, educating and advocating for our companion animal friends!

DRHS volunteers should possess perseverance, independence, and initiative, with a long-term goal of helping promote the health and well-being of all companion animals in the care of the
DRHS. Volunteers should be willing to learn from and work hand in hand with staff, be
excited about animal enrichment, and passionate about the well-being of all animals.

Duties include familiarizing yourself with DRHS organization policies and procedures, the building, and staff members. Helping with duties include dishes, laundry, and cleaning animal living areas. Additional opportunities after training has been completed include walking and socializing dogs, socializing cats, help with grooming efforts, event assistance and support, fundraising efforts, and more!

The goal of the Dubuque Regional Humane Society’s (DRHS) foster care program is to rehabilitate animals in order to make them available for adoption. Cats, kittens, dogs, puppies, and various small mammals are able to find forever homes with the help of our dedicated foster families.

What is a foster parent?

A volunteer foster parent assists in the rehabilitation of an animal by providing in-home care. An animal may need a foster home for a variety of reasons including age, illness, injury, socialization, or to help provide needed space at the shelter for incoming animals.

What are the responsibilities of a foster parent?

It is the foster family’s responsibility to provide a clean, safe, and loving environment for our foster animals. Being a foster parent requires the following:

Table to Table is in need of volunteers to help with maintaining our mission of connecting abundance with need in Johnson County. We are incredibly flexible: whatever your schedule is, we can probably work with it! If you’re into our mission, we most likely have a great fit for you. We have volunteers that come in twice a week and volunteers that come in twice a month and both are valuable to our organization.

Having a volunteer to go through our donations and help organize them is a huge help towards making sure we’re always keeping what would be most helpful to our clients. This position also helps us to redistribute donations we cannot use to other agencies.

These volunteers will organize the donation room, take inventory, communicate information to the staff, and coordinate with other agencies on donations we cannot take that they may be able to use. Volunteers may be asked to help transport donations between locations.

What's the impact of this position? You'll see the direct important of your work when you turn a messy room into an organized one. Every time you come in will be slightly different because the quantity and types of donations we receive vary from day to day.

Current Openings: 

Throughout the day at Willis Dady, there are phone calls, donations, and multiple visitors. Since many are directed to different staff in the shelter, having a point person to direct inquiries is instrumental in allowing our agency to function at its greatest capacity. As such, having a volunteer’s help allows the shelter in running smoothly throughout the day while allowing our staff to better focus on their jobs.

Duties also include answering the phone and refer the call to the proper party, welcoming visitors at the front desk, assist them with their needs, collecting and recording donations that come throughout the day, and understanding how to use the computer regarding logging in information.

Training includes an orientation to Willis Dady, instruction at the front desk. and at least one shift shadowing another volunteer or staff member. There is always staff available to provide assistance during the volunteer shift. 

Throughout the day at Willis Dady, there are phone calls, donations, and multiple visitors. Since many are directed to different staff in the shelter, having a point person to direct inquiries is instrumental in allowing our agency to function at its greatest capacity. As such, having a volunteer’s help allows the shelter in running smoothly throughout the day while allowing our staff to better focus on their jobs.

Duties also include answering the phone and refer the call to the proper party, welcoming visitors at the front desk, assist them with their needs, collecting and recording donations that come throughout the day, and understanding how to use the computer regarding logging in information.

A presenter/teacher will provide a 45-minute presentation/teaching session from a selection of topics for the beneficiaries of the Adult Rehabilitation Center. Topics may include Life Skills, Mental Health Awareness, Nutrition & Well-Being, Christian Living, Physical Wellness, etc.

We need volunteers to help direct visitors throughout our large facility so that they can have a seamless experience. One volunteer is needed to serve at the main entrance in the Grand Lobby and one in the “middle” of our main level exhibit halls helping visitors get to where they want to be. This volunteer opportunity is weekdays and/or weekends.

Dubuque Main Street hosts the Dubuque Farmers' Market in downtown Dubuque May through October. We need help from volunteers who are familiar with running credit card machines.

There are many opportunities for helping out with transportation at USCRI. This can include pick up / drop offs for the classes we offer our clients, doctor's appointments, or job interviews. Bus Orientation Leaders will meet refugee clients at their home and ride the bus with them to get them familiar with public transportation. Clients may want to know routes to the grocery store, doctors' office, or any other place they may frequent. While riding the bus, the Bus Orientation Leader will help the client understand the ins and outs of riding the bus, Volunteers are allowed and encouraged to use apps such as Google Maps or Ride Time to plan the trip and assist the clients. Interpreters and training are provided as needed. 

No family should have to give up their pet because they can’t afford its food. You can help these families and their pets by lending a hand in our pet pantry on Saturdays. Be there to greet clients and fill their monthly food order at our warehouse or assist with packing Animeals – our partnership with Meals on Wheels. Senior Companions assist seniors in helping maintain independence in their home. Whether it is someone who is lonely and isolated, physically or mentally disabled, or someone living with Alzheimer’s disease, Senior Companions help people in ways true friends help one another.

Purpose/Objective:

The person filling the position of Victorian House Museum host will serve as the friendly and helpful public face of the Victorian House Museum—the first and last person patrons will interact with on their visit. Volunteers at the Victorian House Museum support our mission of educating people about and celebrating the history of Cedar Falls.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: welcoming visitors, answering questions, answering the phone, monitoring visitor activity, taking care of gift shop sales, and securing the building.

Shifts are 3 hours long, 10:00-1:00 and 1:00-4:00 pm on Saturdays or 1:00-4:00 pm on Sundays. The Victorian Home is open from February to mid December.

Knowledge of Cedar Falls history is a plus, but not a requirement. Training will be provided.

Qualifications:

Because the historic house side of our building has no elevator, this would be a difficult position for people who use a wheelchair. Accommodations for people with other disabilities will be considered.

The Quad Cities VITA Coalition is spearheaded by United Way Quad Cities and in collaboration with AARP provides free income tax return preparation for taxpayers earning up to $67,000 annually.  

VITA helps working families take advantage of all eligible tax credits for free.  Volunteers from the community are needed to help prepare basic, current year tax returns for eligible taxpayers free of charge.  

Volunteers will be required to complete a training and certification to help.  In addition to tax preparers, volunteers are needed for intake and review.

Seeking childcare volunteers for our twice monthly gatherings.  Volunteer would need to pass a basic background check and be able to pick up/hold children.  This opportunity includes helping the children with a meal and engaging with them within the Creative Adventure Lab while their mothers attend in discussion time.

We are looking for a volunteer who enjoys wonderful items and helping customers!  Our fabulous gift shop in Waterloo needs you to help find the perfect item for someone.  We will help you get familiar with our products and will train you on the register.  Plus, volunteers get a 20% discount!!!

Obtain payment for goods by itemizing and totaling customer’s purchases and provide service to customers before, during and after a purchase.

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore needs flexible volunteers who will jump in and help as needed.

Tasks: (will vary with each volunteer opportunity but may include the following)

Saturday

Child mentors are the main support for the children we serve.  They greet families as they arrive at the barn and maintain connection with their assigned child for the duration of their lesson.  They give encouragement, reinforce directions, provide hand-over-hand demonstration to help the child learn skills, help the instructor as needed, provide physical support for children needing this, and most of all create a lasting bond with an incredible child as they learn an amazing skill.  No horse experience is necessary.  You must be over the age of 14 to participate.  A positive attitude, encouraging spirit and desire to help another person is all that is required!

Purpose/Objective: support Table to Table staff and volunteers

Location: Table to Table

Key Responsibilities: answer phones, greet volunteers and guests, assist with onsite reoccurring food donations, maintain tidy reception area, other office projects as assigned, and be a welcoming presence.

Qualifications: Great verbal communication and interpersonal skills, self-motivated with the ability to problem solve, independent worker

Time Commitment: regular weekly shift, 2-4 hours per week

Training & Support Provided: Introduction to food rescue and Table to Table’s programs and training for key responsibilities provided by Table to Table staff

Benefits: Get involved with food rescue in your community, work with a variety of volunteers, gain skills by taking on independent projects

We're looking for a few talented and conscientious volunteer board members to lead and strengthen our programs for individuals with disabilities, both visible and invisible that will allow them to achieve greater independence. We're especially looking for folks with accounting or legal experience, with disability or gerontology backgrounds, from the diverse communities, or who are on the younger side of the community.
