Volunteer: Language Lab Support VolunteerWhat is the Language Lab? Here at the Catherine McAuley Center, we strive to provide the best possible programming to meet our community’s needs. One of our programs that has taken off with great success is the Language Lab. The Language Lab is a drop in computer lab time where a tutor/coach facilitates and engages students to foster Digital Literacy, English competency, and student confidence by utilizing a variety of digital tools. The tools we use are targeted to reach as wide a range of computer and English literacy as possible- Whether it’s the student’s first time holding a mouse or the student has a background in IT, the Language Lab facilitator will try to find the right programs to help the student meet their goals. When can students come and learn? We work as best we can to meet the time needs of our students. To do this, we open our computer lab during our peak hours in the morning and evening. Right now we are open on Wednesday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings from 10 AM to noon, and on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 5 to 7 PM. In the future we plan on operating every morning and evening that we are open. What else can students do to develop their digital literacy? In addition to the drop in Language Lab times which are structured in a self guided format, students can sign up for one of our guided computer literacy classes that meets every Monday morning. Currently we are taking steps to provide more of the guided digital literacy classes throughout the week. How could I help? The impact of volunteers cannot be overstated here at the CMC. Last year over 350 volunteer tutors helped make our programming possible! If you would like to be a part of what we do, you can sign up for a new tutor orientation on our website, cmc-cr.org/volunteer. Just follow the steps under the ‘volunteer’ tab.Highest Needs: Monday 5-7pm, Tuesday 10-12pm and 5-7pm, Thursday 10-12pm and either 5-6pm or 6-7pm (only one hour of support needed), and Saturday 10-12pm. Volunteer: Empower Refugees: Volunteer with SCIC’s English Learning Classes!SCIC is pleased to offer Community-Based English Learning (CBESL), a program designed to address one of the biggest barriers refugees and immigrants face — limited English-speaking skills. This barrier often hinders access to education, employment, and upward mobility. Our CBESL Program is an entry-level course specifically for adult refugees and immigrants at the beginner level. What sets our program apart is the Co-Teacher method, which pairs each student with a co-teacher from their own community. The co-teacher speaks the student’s native language, understands their culture, and is aware of the specific challenges refugees and immigrants face when accessing community resources. Co-teachers assist in delivering class material, facilitate communication between students and the lead teacher, and provide feedback to ensure that the class is culturally relevant and effective. Co-teachers also play a vital role in building relationships within the community, spreading the word about our classes, and staying in touch with students outside the classroom to improve retention and success. In addition, we are looking for volunteers to watch children aged 2-3 years olds (when volunteers are available) during the ELL classes. Volunteers will provide a safe and nurturing environment while parents focus on learning. We also offer a preschool program for children 3-5 years old to support families as they attend classes. Volunteer: Health Professionals: The Red Cross Needs YOU!If you live in or near the Quad Cities, our Disaster Shelter Team needs your help to offer safe, healthy evacuation or emergency shelters for people in our area who are impacted by fires, flooding, tornadoes or other disasters. When people are displaced from their homes in an emergency, the American Red Cross offers comfort, food, lodging assistance and individual recovery casework to help them get back on their feet. In the immediate aftermath of a large disaster, we need to be able to quickly open shelters to provide a safe place for these people. We are required to have at least one Disaster Health Service Associate on hand at each of these shelters to ensure the well-being of residents, volunteers, and other staff members. This is where your qualifications in the health professions comes in. Disaster Health Service Associates make sure that everyone has access to their medications and durable medical equipment (or that they can get them replaced), as many people may have to leave these important items behind in an emergency evacuation. These associates also make sure that anyone who is too sick to be in the shelter or who has a communicable illness, is sent to an appropriate medical facility. There's very little direct clinical care done at the shelter, but with your knowledge and training, you would be able to make triage decisions. You're also on hand in case someone has a medical emergency, and your inherent compassion will provide much comfort to people who are under incredible stress. IF THIS OPPORTUNITY APPEALS TO YOU, please contact us today by indicating your interest here, or by texting Connie at 309-207-5266. Let's discuss it further and see if this is a good fit for you! Professional qualifications are required for this important volunteer position. If you have a CURRENT, unencumbered license as one of the following, you could become a Disaster Health Service Associate or Supervisor:Registered Nurse (RN) Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)* Paramedic* Medical Doctor (MD) Doctor of Osteopathy (DO)
