On September 11, TRAIL will join thousands of Americans in honoring the National Day of Service and Remembrance by helping older adults throughout Johnson County remain safe, independent, and connected to their communities.

From 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, teams of volunteers will complete yard and garden projects at the homes of TRAIL members who need an extra hand. Whether it's weeding flower beds, trimming shrubs, spreading mulch, raking, or tackling other seasonal outdoor tasks, every project helps create a safer and more welcoming home environment for our members.

This special afternoon of service is an opportunity to remember the spirit of unity and compassion that emerged after September 11 by putting those values into action right here in our own community.

No special gardening expertise is required—just a willingness to serve and work alongside fellow volunteers. Individuals, families, friends, neighborhood groups, civic organizations, faith communities, and workplace teams are all encouraged to participate.

In just two hours, volunteers can make a lasting difference. For many TRAIL members, outdoor maintenance has become physically difficult or impossible. A couple of hours of volunteer service not only improves the appearance and safety of a home but also provides reassurance that someone cares.

Welcome Center Volunteers serve as the first point of contact for visitors, clients, and community partners. This role helps create a welcoming, professional, and supportive environment while assisting staff with basic administrative and reception duties.

Key Responsibilities

Answer buzzer (doorbell).

Greet visitors, clients, and guests in a friendly and professional manner.

Direct visitors to the appropriate team member, office, or program.

Answer and route incoming phone calls as needed.

Provide general information about Firefly programs and services.

Help maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming reception area.

Firefly sends out a monthly mailing to everyone newly eligible for Medicaid insurance coverage.  These mailings need to be prepared and stuffed, so some folks with quick fingers and agile wrists would be the perfect fit to get those envelopes ready to mail.  When those we serve receive their mailing, they are filled with resources to connect them to supports they need, as well as information on ensuring their family has a medical and dental home.  These supports help keep families healthy and out of the costly hospital and ER.

We are looking for someone who is familiar with the Council Bluffs community and has either owned a business locally or has experience in early childhood services, supporting families experiencing poverty, or another related field. We are hoping to find someone who is passionate about strengthening our community and supporting young children and families.

This is a one-year commitment. Policy Council meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month via Zoom from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

First Responders’ Veterinary Network is a nonprofit organization building a nationwide emergency-response capability for incidents involving injured, trapped, frightened, or displaced animals. FRVN recruits and prepares volunteer veterinarians to work alongside fire, EMS, law enforcement, animal control, and emergency management. Through training, equipment, coordination, and on-scene veterinary support, FRVN works to improve responder safety, reduce animal suffering, and strengthen community preparedness. Position

Summary

FRVN is seeking a creative and dependable Volunteer Marketing and Social Media Coordinator to help expand awareness of our mission, recruit veterinary volunteers, engage donors, and promote training and outreach activities. This volunteer will help develop clear, professional, and engaging content for FRVN’s social media channels, website, email communications, fundraising campaigns, and conference appearances.

Volunteers will guide families through the backpack and school supply selection process and ensure the families receive their requested items.   If families have registered for additional services such as haircuts, vaccinations, eye and/or dental screenings, volunteers will direct families to those service areas.

Volunteers will also help restock and straighten backpacks and school supply tables as needed.

38 students will be arriving in shifts with their families every 15 minutes.

MICAH House believes that every child deserves access to safe, high-quality early education. With the opening of the Florence M. Lakin Child Development Center, we’re proud to offer just that. This 12,000-square-foot facility provides care and learning for children ages six weeks to six years through a Montessori-inspired curriculum for children from both MICAH House and the community.

During this year’s Black Maternal Health Week in April, IBBG collaborated with Douglas County Health Department and A Mother’s Love to collect wipe and diaper donations in preparation for our upcoming Annual Baby Shower this October.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Omaha Community and Catholic Charities St. Martin de Porres, the drive successfully brought in 81 packages of wipes and over 6,000 diapers! Now, we are ready to sort and prepare these donations for the Annual Black Maternal Health Month Community Baby Shower!

We are looking for 25 - 30 volunteers on September 11th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at IBBG’s Anarcha Center - 2306 N. 24th St. 68110 - to help sort, organize, and package the diapers and wipes. Your support will be critical in helping IBBG prepare for this Annual Community Baby Shower, which celebrates and assists recently delivered and expectant mothers throughout the Omaha Community, while uplifting Black Maternal Health.

Our after-school and summer academic programs for students in grades K-5 help build character, promote healthy exercise options, and provide student-driven educational enrichment opportunities to help students become well-rounded. The academic enrichment opportunities may include but are not limited to the following areas: art, culture, science, technology, logic, movement, sports, and outdoor activities.

 Volunteers can volunteer for 1.5 to 2 hours, one to five days a week. Engaging and connecting with the students is the volunteers' primary role! :)

Help keep the Pumpkinfest Parade organized before it begins! Parade staging volunteers assist participants as they arrive, direct them to their assigned lineup locations, answer questions, and help ensure the parade begins safely and efficiently. This is a fun way to be part of one of Pumpkinfest's most popular traditions while helping everything run smoothly.

Convivium Urban Farmstead grows food on over 7000 square feet of garden space. This food is used in a variety of ways towards supporting Convivium’s mission of “improving life through food.” Some of the food is enjoyed in our restaurant or merchandise, where the proceeds go toward supporting our non-profit outreach programs. Some of the food is handed out as ingredients in our weekly free casserole program. And some of the food is picked by the general public as free, accessible, healthy produce. 

Volunteer gardeners are an important part of the labor force that brings that food to life, gets it onto people’s plates, and helps fulfill Convivium’s mission.

Garden Tenders keep Convivium’s gardens healthy, thriving, and productive. Garden Tenders work at recurring weekly volunteer sessions alongside a Garden Guru preparing beds, planting, mulching, watering, weeding, harvesting, and doing all the little things that help food to grow. Garden experience is beneficial but not as important as a willingness to learn and a desire to become part of the Convivium mission of improving life through food.

Story County 4-H is seeking volunteer club leaders to help guide youth through an exciting FIRST® LEGO® League experience. Volunteer leaders will partner with 4-H staff to provide positive youth development opportunities through hands-on STEM learning, robotics, teamwork, and problem-solving.

As a 4-H FIRST® LEGO® League Volunteer Club Leader, you will work directly with youth in either the Explore level (grades 2–3) or Challenge level (grades 4–8). Leaders will work alongside another FLL volunteer and Story County Extension staff to plan, facilitate, and support a successful season.

Extension staff members will help connect leaders with information and help with information on the 4-H and extension side, but will not run meetings unless they volunteer as a club leader.

September 11 is a day our nation remembers with reflection, gratitude, and respect. We honor the lives lost, recognize the courage of the first responders and service members who answered the call, and remember the countless individuals who came together to help their neighbors in the days that followed.

At Meals from the Heartland, that same spirit of service is at the heart of our mission. Every meal packaged by volunteers is an act of compassion, providing nourishment to families facing food insecurity and communities recovering from disasters and times of crisis.

National Nonprofit Day: Celebrating the Power of Service

Join Meals from the Heartland and fellow nonprofit organizations for a special National Nonprofit Day packaging event at the Patty Cownie Packaging Center. This gathering brings together nonprofit leaders, volunteers, and community partners for a shared day of service, connection, and impact.

While our missions may look different, we share a common purpose: caring for people and strengthening our communities. Together, we will assemble nutritious, nonperishable, and culturally adaptable meals that provide nourishment and hope to children and families experiencing food insecurity locally and around the world.

Every meal assembled represents compassion in action. It can support a child ready to learn, provide comfort to families recovering after natural disasters, bring stability to communities facing hardship, and remind people that they are not alone.

This event is more than packing meals. It is an opportunity to lead with heart, serve with purpose, and create meaningful impact alongside organizations dedicated to making a difference.

Held in the week following the 25th anniversary of 9/11 and the National Day of Service, this trail cleanup is how we turn remembrance into action, giving back together, and taking care of the community we share.

Spruce Up CASA

Join us on your own schedule for assistance giving back by helping refresh and maintain the CASA office! We're looking for volunteers to assist with a variety of indoor and outdoor projects that will help keep our workspace safe, functional, and welcoming for the staff, advocates, volunteers, and community partners who help advocate for children every day.

At  Kids Can Community Center, our mission is to educate, engage, and inspire children through early childhood care and out-of-school experiences. Founded in 1908 as the Social Settlement Association of Omaha, we changed our name to Kids Can Community Center to better reflect our vision for children and families in our community.  Today we are a state-licensed childcare provider for children ages 6 weeks to 13-years old, offering full-day early childhood education. As an early childhood reader you'll have the opportunity to read in one of our brand-new preschool classrooms!

Volunteers are needed to help children ages 1 to 17 with crafts, games, and activities that our staff will plan. Our shelter provides emergency housing for up to 8 families with children at a time. Most children's activities have between 5 to 15 children in attendance.

About Families Forward: Families Forward (previously Bidwell Riverside Center and Hawthorn Hill) has four main programs: Bidwell Pantry, Child Development Center, New Directions Shelter (emergency housing), and The Home Connection (long-term housing). For over 100 years, our mission has been to provide compassionate, life-changing assistance to families and their path to self-sufficiency.

Dubuque Trees Forever's Hill St Orchard is located at the corner of Hill St and Caledonia.   We are need volunteers weekly to help with weeding, trash collection and on-going care of the site.  Would you or your organization like to be involved?    We hope to rotate regular duties with teams of community members from churches, schools, families, neighborhoods, businesses and more.  Individuals are welcome, too.  Let us know what week you can help then come at your convenience that week.   Once you've signed up on our website, you can come anytime.

We are building a new organization.  We meet the first Wednesday of every month at 5:30.  We work to advocate for parks, build volunteer engagement in parks and create fundraising to allow us to purchase special items or programs for our parks that the normal budget does not allow.   Are you interested in joining our board?  State your interest here and we will contact you with more details!  

Come help play with and watch over the kiddos who come to our Pow Wow! The Children's area is a fun place where children can participate in crafts led by our volunteers. If you have children yourself, you are more than welcome to bring them with you!

Volunteers in this area will be needed for 6-hour shifts on September 12 and the 13th.

Kids club is a hands on free art class at the MacNider Art Museum. Volunteers will assist with projects, handing out supplies, and other simple art tasks.

These questions range from marketing and pricing strategies, startup needs, target market brainstorming and competition research, tips, products or other services to offer, general industry or business ownership questions, licensing questions, etc.

These questions have been thoughtfully collected by RISE’s In-Prison Program Director, Andrea Wright, and Prison Program Associate, Bryan Dahlberg. Together, they have created a form for volunteers to complete providing anonymous feedback and research to support our participants programming needs at this time.

Help us prepare for our annual Community Baby Shower by assembling packages for expectant mothers and families with newborns.  Volunteers will work together to sort and package donated baby supplies such as diapers, wipes, clothing, books, and other essential items into boxes for distribution at our Community Baby Shower in October.

Hello! DBQFest needs your helping hands to make this community arts celebration a success. Our main event will take place August 8th & 9th in Washington Park.

Making calls from August to November to lapsed participants from Jingle Bell Run to register. A script and call list will be provided prior to making calls. Jingle Bell Run is a fundraiser for the Arthritis Foundation. It is held December 5th at Papillion Landing. We have a 5k timed and untimed run, 1 mile, kids run, virtual, and volunteer opportunities.  Money raised goes toward finding a cure for Arthritis which affects 60 million people.

Seeking a friendly, welcoming individual to answer the phones, direct calls, greet guests and take deliveries and repair payments in our main office Monday - Thursdays. 

Qualifications include: good phone etiquette, friendly personality, people with disabilities are welcome. A background check would be required, as this individual would handle money.

Snacks are provided and volunteers can bring a book or something to do when it's quiet!

Our organic urban garden is a half-acre plot behind our central location, where for over 15 years we have cultivated both annual vegetables and edible perennials. We grow over 2,000 pounds of produce each year, which all goes directly to our free meal program. The garden also serves as a peaceful green space for anyone spending time in the heart of downtown Dubuque, with the intention of caring for both the physical and mental health of our community.

Volunteers would help weed, prep beds for planting, plant and harvest. Instruction provided.

Children are welcome and must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

West Des Moines Human Services is seeking volunteers to assist with English Language Learner (ELL) classes for adult learners on Tuesday and/or Thursday mornings from 10 am to noon. Knowledge of a second language is not necessary to volunteer. Some teaching experience is preferred, but not required. West Des Moines Human Services is seeking volunteers for its Food Rescue Program.  This opportunity is available weekdays at West Des Moines Human Services.  Volunteers help with sorting and dating food items.  Shifts are approximately two hours in length.  Some lifting involved (up to 25 lbs). ReStore volunteers help with all the daily tasks of running the store. Tasks will include unloading donations, assisting with small projects, cleaning, re-merchandising products, and organizing the different departments within the store.  We also need volunteers willing to ride in our truck along with staff to pick up donated items within the Iowa City and Coralville areas. If you enjoy small projects and interacting with others while helping a great cause, the ReStore is the perfect opportunity for you!

Help build and rehabilitate homes along with Habitat for Humanity staff and hard-working people in our community. Home-owners will work to volunteer on the construction of their own home and will pay a long-term, affordable mortgage for the cost of the house.

Volunteers will help us with the majority exterior and interior construction, demolition and remodeling work at a home. No prior skills or knowledge are necessary! We train you and give you all the tools you need to accomplish the tasks for each shift. Learn new construction skills, make new memories, meet new friends, and help give back to the community!

Volunteers sort and bag cans so they can be dropped off for redemption, and the funds received fund affordable housing solutions. With each Iowa City ReStore truckload of cans sorted by volunteers, Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity raises around $1,000.

Join us in helping local students get ready to kick off a successful school year and get ready to learn!

Volunteers will sort donated supplies, pack backpacks, organize materials, unload deliveries and prepare thousands of school supply kits for distribution to local students and families.

Your time and energy helps ensure local students have the supplies they need to start the school year confident, prepared and ready to learn.

Welcome and engage guests at the silent auction area by sharing information about the auction items and gift baskets, encouraging participation, answering questions, and helping create an exciting and enjoyable experience. Volunteers will also help keep the auction area organized.

Lunch Volunteers

Monday–Friday | 11:20 AM–12:30 PM

Spend your lunch hour making a meaningful difference by helping serve hot, nutritious meals to the older adults at ISC.

This opportunity is best suited for individual volunteers or pairs (up to two volunteers at a time) to help ensure smooth meal service. Volunteers will deliver meals directly to the tables where seniors are seated and, once lunch service is complete, assist staff with wiping down tables.

This is a wonderful opportunity for those who enjoy interacting with older adults while providing a valuable service.

Program Instructors Volunteer 

Monday–Friday | 10:20–11:20 AM or 12:20–1:20 PM

Do you enjoy teaching and helping others learn? Our volunteer instructors provide engaging educational classes that help older adults build confidence and independence.

This opportunity is designed for volunteers who can commit to teaching one class each week on an ongoing basis. Consistency helps our seniors build relationships with their instructors and continue progressing in their learning.

ISC offers a structured English as a Second Language (ESL) program with four different learning levels:

Lessons focus on practical everyday English, including the alphabet, numbers, colors, emotions, vocabulary, and conversation practice. Seniors advance through each level as their language skills improve.

No teaching experience is required. ISC provides lesson plans, curriculum, worksheets, and classroom materials to make teaching simple and enjoyable.
