The RSVP Youth Reading Volunteer will provide reading help and companionship to elementary students at the AEA Rising Hope Academy, grades 1-5. Your job requires you to bring your listening ears and lots of smiles as you listen to students sharing their stories!
Program description: AEA Rising Hope Academy provides a therapeutic classroom environment for students with significant social-emotional behavioral health needs. Through a variety of interventions, students can gain the coping skills and resilience they need to assist with their social, educational, and emotional outcomes. Reading is a critical skill for life. To help students achieve their full potential with reading skills, the RSVP Youth Reading Program is asking for volunteers to aid in small reading groups. Volunteers will be asked to follow teachers’ detailed instructions with a small group of students and engage in reading activities.
Duties:
● Interact with elementary students and be a welcoming adult face
● Provide help with reading as needed
● Protect the privacy and confidentiality of students and their families
Skills required:
● Must be 55 years of age or older.
● Must successfully pass a background check.
● Relate well to staff, volunteers and students and work with a team approach.
● Willingness to support students in their academic work.
Supervisor: Volunteers will be supervised by the AEA Rising Hope Academy classroom teacher.
Amount of Time: 1 or 2-hour weekly shifts, varies – we will work with your schedule. A minimum of 1 shift weekly is appreciated, but feel free to take more!
Time of Day: Volunteers can set hours that meet their schedules during school hours, Monday through Friday during the school year.
