Program description:  The Restored Depot and WWII Veteran’s Museum offers two volunteer opportunities including greeting museum visitors and helping them to enjoy the museum to the fullest; Flower Garden Assistant during Spring/Summer/Fall - assisting with weeding and care of outdoor flower beds.  Training is available to help you be better informed about the Depot and the Museum so that you can provide visitors with an educational experience.  Depending on volunteers’ area of interest help is needed with database input for collections, research for local history or artifacts, assisting with exhibits – research, labeling, arranging, etc.  There are also opportunities to assist with special events. 

 

Location: The Restored Depot and WWII Veteran’s Museum (305 South Second St., Red, Iowa, IA)

 

Duties – Greeter and Tour Guide:

·       Attending training for specific areas of interest.

·       Greet and engage with visitors, answering questions and encouraging discussion.

·       Lead guided tours of the museum, sharing knowledge about exhibits and the history of Red Oak.

·       Dusting and cleaning the top of the glass exhibits as time permits.

·       Promote the Restored Depot and WWII Veteran’s Museum throughout the community.

Duties – Research Assistant:

·       Attending training for specific areas of interest.

·       Assist staff with archival research and cataloging historical materials.

·       Compile information for exhibits and educational programs.

·       Organize and maintain research files and resources.

·       Promote Restored Burlington Northern RR Depot/WW II Museum throughout the community.

 

Duties – Special Events:

·       Attending training for specific areas of interest.

·       Assist in planning and executing museum events.

·       Support event setup, registration, and logistics on the day of the event.

·       Promote the Restored Depot and WWII Veteran’s Museum throughout the community.

 

 

 

 

Duties – Flower Garden Assistant:

·       Plant flowers during spring months.

·       Weed and maintain the flower beds.

·       Prepare beds for winter.

Skills required:

      RSVP volunteers must be 55 years of age or older.

      Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

      Passion for history and community engagement.

      Ability to listen and solve problems.

      Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

      Flexibility to take on various tasks as needed.


Supervision:  Volunteers will be supervised by Museum Manager, Jolene Crawford.

 

Shifts:  Greeter/Tour Guide shifts are 2 hrs. in length on a weekly basis.  Flower Garden Assistant is flexible and can be as needed to maintain the beds.
