Program Description:
Volunteers play a meaningful role in enriching residents’ daily lives through
companionship and social activities. Red
Oak Good Samaritan is seeking volunteers who can provide companionship for
residents through one-to-one activities – including crafts, board games,
puzzles, reading, writing letters, walking, church, and other activities
requested by the resident. Volunteers offer encouragement, connection, and a
friendly presence while supporting residents in ways that promote independence,
dignity, and joy. You will enjoy making
some new friends so get ready for a good time!
Location:
Good Samaritan – Red Oak – 201 Alix St., Red Oak, Iowa
Duties:
• Attend a volunteer orientation to become familiar with activity spaces, staff
expectations, and volunteer guidelines.
• Assist residents with a variety of social and recreational activities,
including:
· Crafts and simple creative projects
· Other one on one activities selected by the resident
· Board and card games
· Reading aloud
· Light walks or strolls (as appropriate for each resident)
· Prepare for church services and coffee afterwards
Provide companionship through conversation, patience, and
positive engagement.
• Encourage participation while respecting resident comfort levels and
abilities.
• Communicate clearly and respectfully with residents, staff, and fellow
volunteers.
• Notify staff whenever a resident needs assistance outside the volunteer role.
• Create a warm, welcoming, and supportive environment for all residents.
Document activities by resident and document hours/date provided.

Skills Required:
• Friendly, patient, and empathetic demeanor.
• Comfortable engaging in conversations with older adults.
• Ability to offer gentle encouragement without rushing or directing residents.
• Reliability and consistency when arriving for scheduled volunteer times.
• Good listening and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect resident privacy.
• RSVP Volunteers must be 55 or older.
Amount of Time:
Volunteer sessions may be scheduled based on your availability and the
facility’s activity calendar. Volunteers may choose the days and time blocks
that best fit their schedule. Afternoons
are preferred as they fit best into the client’s schedules. Church services occur on Sunday afternoons.
